  11. What a scoop! Writer makes team at USC Writer was looking for story but caught on as WR 10:45 AM CST on Monday, March 27, 2006 Ben Malcolmson is every parent's nightmare: a smart kid who wants to be a sportswriter. An intern here at SportsDay last summer, he only made less than an "A" a couple of times growing up. He was so smart, USC invited him to forgo his senior year at Highland Park for an academic program that would allow him to graduate with a bachelor's this spring, five days before he turns 21. He likes sportswriting because he loves sports. The job affords a close-up view without much risk of injury, unless you slip in the buffet line. But a press box isn't close enough for Ben. So for a story in USC's student paper, he tried out for the Trojans three weeks ago. Sweetheart, get me rewrite: Ben makes the football team ... his first since the fifth grade. Not just any team, either. USC had been voted by some as maybe the greatest team ever until Texas' delegation was heard from in the Rose Bowl. How big is Ben's story? Producers from Nightline and Good Morning America have called, as well as newspapers from across the country. A movie producer met with him after Sunday's practice. They'd all like to tell the story of a former sportswriter who last played football as a defensive tackle in a Pop Warner league outside Chicago. "Defensive line was the right field of Little League baseball," he said. "They always put the worst players there. "I hated it." He didn't change his mind when his family moved to Highland Park a couple of years later. "You hear so much about the quality of football in Texas," he said. "Besides, I was small, and the practices were at 6 a.m." So he ran cross country and track and made good grades and went off to USC. Once on campus, he covered the football team, played intramural football and grew three inches, to 6-feet, 170. And those were pretty much his qualifications for trying out with about 40 other hopefuls on March 7. Ben made it through drills easily enough. He was lining up for the 40-yard dash when he heard a USC assistant say, "That's that newspaper guy!" As any smart reporter would do, he ran. His first time: 4.87. Sizzling for a sportswriter. Not so hot for a wide receiver. But Pete Carroll, USC's coach, was encouraging. On his second run, Ben knocked the time down to 4.72. Next, he caught a few passes. One hit him in the stomach so hard it knocked the breath out of him. On another, he made a one-handed catch. USC student Ben Malcolmson last played football as a defensive tackle in a Pop Warner league outside Chicago. All things considered, it was great fodder for a feature in the USC paper. But the scope of the story grew exponentially a couple of days later when a buddy called to say his name was on a team roster. Ben didn't bite. In journalism classes, they teach skepticism. The sportswriter went to see the head coach. "You could catch some balls out there," Carroll told him. "We're really low on numbers, especially wide receivers. Do you want to do it?" "Heck yes," Ben said. "Well, let's do it." Another coach told Ben it would be tough. Not much glamour, either. He'd play on scout teams, mimicking USC opponents in practice. He wouldn't travel, but he'd be on the sideline at home games in uniform. His uniform. No. 24. "This can't be real," Ben wrote. Reality soon intruded. Getting dressed for his first practice, he realized he didn't know how. "I just watched the guys next to me," he said. Had to ask a new teammate which kinds of pads to use. Fortunately, he asked a guy who didn't dress him like an offensive lineman. "Everyone's been really amazing," Ben said. "No one's really hazed me or anything." The two linebackers who leveled him on kickoff coverage the other day, breaking his chinstrap, were extremely nice afterward. Sudden thought: You haven't written anything bad about any of these guys, have you? "I don't think so," he said, innocently. "If I have, it's been so long ago, I'm sure they've forgotten." Oh, Ben. His parents, Ken and Susie, are excited and supportive. Asked what he's told them so far, Susie said, "He got pretty well smooshed by two guys twice his size." Did he really say "smooshed"? "Well, that was my interpretation." A good one, probably. Ben also endured his first helmet-to-helmet hit and remained upright. He's up to two painkillers a day but feels great. Coolest moment: Lining up on the other side of the field from Dwayne Jarrett, probably a top-five pick in next year's draft. Weirdest interview: Ryan Seacrest asked on his LA talk show if there's "a lot of butt-slapping" after good plays. Ben said no. Seacrest told him that's how it went on his football team. "I told him it was probably just directed at him," Ben said. "I don't think he liked the answer." The attention has been so overwhelming that USC officials are trying to downplay the story. Carroll declined to respond for this column. Ben is routing calls through USC public relations. Not that he's complaining. He calls the experience "one of the coolest things I've ever done," and figures it will provide him perspective "if I do decide to go back to journalism." Planning on a career change? "I don't want to dream too big," he said. "I'm a ninth-string wide receiver." Don't stop dreaming now, Ben. We'll leave a light on for you in the press box.
  12. as a former baseball player I personally never care about what the stands looked like. It is the playing surface that matters.
  13. Joining the EXes help your whole university not just athletics. I sure the NT Exes will be more than willing to work out an affordable payment plan. They did this for me 5 years ago when I joined as lifetime member, $500, I think I did $50 a month. "The North Texas EXES Alumni Association is dedicated to PROMOTING the University of North Texas by CONNECTING with alumni, friends and current students through programs, scholarships and activities that create awareness and loyalty, SUPPORTING the ideals of the University."
  14. I think you just like having a Woody!!!!
  15. With 20+ turnovers by UH I would say we did a pretty good job on the defense. They just had a couple of guys shoot lights out.
