  1. To say that the student government passing a resolution is equitable about being serious about moving to 1A football is quite a leap. If Texas State was REALLY serious about moving to 1A you'd see movement by the administration, the BOR, the athletic department et. al. I truely believe that if Texas State started making any serious noise about 1A football the Longhorn mafia wouldn't be too happy with a start up 1A football program in their market.
  2. Any chance we can get that design made into those chrome decals/insigna for the back of your car?
  3. Boise St. Playbook .pdf download A couple of years old but still some interesting reading....
  4. Woody Wilson.... Can we just start calling him Wooderson for short? "Awright! Awright! Awright!!!"
  5. UNT alum Ron Paris profiled in Lewisville Leader: Lewisville grad returns to serve community he grew up in By CHRIS ROARK 03/03/2006 When Ron Paris was 16, he was helping the Lewisville football team win a state championship. He was also getting a head start on his future career of helping others. A small fire at his father's shop sparked his interest in firefighting after he helped extinguish the fire. Now, nearly eight years later, football is behind him but his days of rescuing those in need are just beginning. Paris, a 1998 Lewisville graduate, was hired by the Lewisville Fire Department in January after spending 10 months with the Grapevine department. While he said Grapevine is a great city, there was no question that Lewisville was the place for him. "Everyone sets their goals as to where they want to be, and Lewisville let that happen for me," Paris said. "I enjoy my town. I was born here and went to school here, and Lewisville is a tremendous department. I'm lucky to be here." Paris' journey to become a firefighter began after graduating from the University of North Texas, where he continued his football career as defensive end. After graduation, he entered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) school and then went to the fire academy. Having training in both areas is becoming more common for firefighters, but Paris said that just comes with the times. "We have a lot of training that we have to do," Paris said. "Houses are tighter now, so there's less air inside. EMS is more involved, and there's a lot more to know now. If you're not learning something new, it's a lost day." And there are lots of things to learn. His firefighter training encompassed cognitive skills, classroom work and hands-on training that stretched far beyond putting out fires. While knowing how to crawl through smoke and use a breathing apparatus is a must, so is the knowledge of vehicle rescue in any situation and carbon monoxide detection. And with a heavier emphasis being placed on firefighters having paramedic training than ever before, Paris attended classroom sessions, rode with other paramedics, was graded and evaluated on his performance and worked under a doctor to be able to practice medicine. "I felt like I knew a lot of general stuff," Paris said of his time in EMT school. "But now that I'm with the department, I'm learning a lot more. We have excellent paramedics here, so they show me what they know." Firefighters work shifts that require them to work 24 straight hours and then take off 48 straight hours. A typical workday begins with taking the appropriate medication and checking all of the equipment. There are daily morning chores, which include doing dishes since he eats and sleeps at the station on workdays. The department usually has about eight to 10 calls per shift, but when all is quiet, the firefighters are busy training. So far, Paris has responded to three fires. He hasn't seen a fire involving people he has known in the past, and he hopes he never does. But he's ready to help if that time comes. "This is a way for him to give back to the community that he grew up in," said Assistant Fire Chief Tim Tittle. "He's getting to do what he's wanted to do, which is to be a civil servant and help people."
  6. Stanford Stadium Site on Stanford's reconstruction of their stadium. Some interesting numbers. Stadium capacity is going to drop from 85,500 to 50,000. By getting rid of the track and lowering the field the distance from the first usable seat to the sideline is going from 115 ft. to 45 feet! And the furthest seat from the sideline is moving from 265 feet away to only 180ft.
  7. Be careful what you ask for Emmitt, I'm sure we'll see this little nugget ad nausem over then next few months as Plumm adds it to his conspiracy ladden thread-hijacks.
  8. Started playing young in pee-wee, kept with it all through middle school and high school. Played 4 years of O-line at Lewisville for the Fighting Farmers. No state titles for me though, best we ever did was quarter-finals. Had a couple of offers from a couple of small colleges that I didn't want to go to. And just like Got5onit, I had been told I would hate small time football after playing high school at the 5A level. Besides it was time for my knees to leave football behind. I liked walking too much. After football I decided to go in the opposite direction...I had debated in high school and had an offer to join one of the top college debate programs in the nation at North Texas, so I took them up on that and did the debate thing for a couple of years.
  9. NOT ANYMORE, thank God. Say what you want about the son of worm logo and the branding process but at the very least it got those two colors off the UNT logo.
  10. YES! We should never condsider the "journyman" assistant coach when hiring. By doing so we can avoid such losers as Larry Coker of Miami, who had 5 assistant jobs before gettig a head coach gig. (Ohio St, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Tulsa, Miami) or Mack Brown of Texas- 6 stops as an assistant (Fla St, S. Miss, Memphis, Iowa St, LSU, Oklahoma). We could have avoided hiring a coaching legend like Lou Holtz, who had 5 assistant coach jobs (Ohio St, Iowa, William & Mary, Conneticut, South Carolina) Maybe we should compare apples with apples and look at some of the coaches at colleges on a more equal footing w/ UNT i.e. NON-BCS Mike Price of UTEP-4 stops (Wash St, Pugent Sound, Wash St, Missouri), Gary Patterson at TCU who has at top 25 program in Ft Worth. Patterson had ELEVEN yes 11! assistant coach gigs before becoming the head man in cowtown. (Kansas St, Tenn. Tech, Cal-Davis, Cal Lutheran, Pittsburgh St, Sonoma St, Oregon Lightning (arena) Utah State, Navy, New Mexico, TCU) So in short- PMG is right! we should automatically disallow any "journyman" assistant coach. It's obvious that they could never run a successful program
  11. Guess we got a bargain then? They managed to spend 200k more and did the design in-house? WOW
  12. Good ideas but none of them get you over the hurdle of the UIL and the weelly hours limit these band directors have the kids
  13. Before you all get too excited. Let's remember he did that all against TAPPS competition.
  14. Awhile back after reading post after post of the band day idea I finally asked my sister and her husband (who are both band directors) why this doesn't happen. They both answered very quickly... They wouldnt have the time to do something like that. The earlier post is correct in that they have marching competitions to go to, but the UIL also limits the band in the number of hours per week they have have the kids practice and compete just like athletics are limited. And those hours are already taken up by practice, performing at their own games, and marching competitions. They just don't have enough hours in the week to require the kids give up a Saturday afternoon/night. And thats true for 1A through 5A schools
  15. Now thats funny! Since you have envoked the name of PMG, What's the over/under on how long till he uses it as an excuse to hijack this thread with yet another epistle on the ills in Mean Green Country?
  16. ESPN Magazine Feb 13th issue- CF-College Football Insider pg. 147 w2w4 02/13 SPRING BALL OPENS: DENTON, TEXAS When you go 2-9, practice can't come soon enough. Ditto if you're a back who gained 361 yards one season after an 1,801-yard breakout. Lucky for Jamario Thomas and his Mean Green pals, North Texas alway gets an early start.
  17. Quick lesson in headline writting. The words chosen for a headline don't always best describe the content of the article. The editors challenge is to find the words that describe the story AND that will fit into the space provided. It's an inexact process to pick words that will do the job with the limitations of font and column inches.
  18. "Ligthen up Francis" It's joke, thats all it is. "... we really must maintain our humor with much of what we are being asked to support from those on campus who ask us to do such even while they wear a straight face"--PlummMeanGreen 2/3/06 4:34 PM
  19. DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET IT!!!!! Malone was DRIVEN away from UNT by Lee Jackson!. Yeah...that the ticket. LEE JACKSON is continuing his meddling in the athletic department. He wants to cut the assistant coach staff so he can roll their salary money into the UNT-Dallas budget. I have it on good authority from some nameless but well placed UNT alumnus (I"ll just claim someboy emailed me or PM'd me with the info). Anyway, this was all decided in a behind the scenes, closed door meeting between Jackson, Bobby Ray and the double secret Kansas State conspirators....
  20. Not true, Highland Park played in 5A for most of the 80's, when they dropped to 4A there was some serious consideration to keep playing at the 5A level. (schools dropping down can petition to play up one level) The HP powerbrokers decided to play at the 4A level and they've been there ever since.
  21. Considering his affection for conspiracy theory, if you are going to honor PlummMeanGreen whay not call the team "The Lone Gunman"
  22. Rick, Once again thanks for all you do, It's not at every university where the AD will take the time to respond as you do. Depending on when it's scheduled you can count on me for the quarterly meeting. One question, will there be a fan meeting for signing day at the AC like last year?
  23. Sigh.... Only at North Texas can we get a post about the football banquet spawn an 10 paragraph rant railing against: UNT-Dallas Bobby Ray and where his grandkids sit at basketball games Basketball attendance A 'supposed' Kansas St gang conspiracy to hire DD Not signing Spudd Webb Not hiring Dennis Francione The current women's Bball coach All of which I fail to see have anything to do with Rick being excited about spring football.
  24. With the exception of the New Mexico win in 84, Those other wins during the Corky era weren't with Mills coached defenses. From he 1985 thru 1990 season Mills was an assistant and head coach at Lewisville High School.
  25. Not to dogpile on here but, It seems like the posters that liked Mills never played for the guy, And the posters that did play for him have a less than possitive opinion. I fall into the later category. I'll just say I played for the guy, didn't like him much and I don't know of anyone that played for him that cared for the guy.... Now that it's going on 20 years ago, I give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's mellowed with age. But then again haven't we all?
