I made this point several months ago in a thread about the NIL being the end, that we can't keep up, regardless of what we try to do.

To be fair, some people said, save it for another day (it wasn't too long after the end of the football season) and the mood was pretty glib to say the least so I did.

Now that everyone seems to be caught up, what does the future for UNT Football with the NIL look like?

First of all, the NIL is bolstered by State and Federal Laws, it aint going anywhere, no matter what or who wants to vote otherwise in college athletics (there's a reason why the NCAA never wanted to go down this road and some people still can't seem to make this connection, maybe the politicians looking for votes should've gone elsewhere but clearly not enough people understand this so  they got their votes and college athletics got the NIL)

Second, it might be surprising but a Rec & Leisure Studies undergraduate class at UNT predicted this entirely in 2009/10 and the point was made that UNT would be better off investing in basketball at the time and becoming a basketball school - take that debate anyway you want, hindsight is 20/20 but apply it to today and how the NIL is and will continue to shape the college recruiting landscape, paying for 12 players is a lot more palpable than paying for football players.

Finally, how much are we willing to waste to stay DI?  I'm not happy about it but if you have any common sense and can see, even a few years into the future, the gambit is over, the Power 5 and "Haves" have won, it's a futile and naive effort to believe UNT can compete in the new "NIL-NCAA" Era (PERIOD).

Pro leagues have salary caps for a reason: parity and revenue sharing saved the NFL and is the benchmark for the most succesful pro leagues in the world = THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN WITH THE NIL/NCAA ERA - THE LAW MAKES THAT IMPOSSIBLE (AND TO TRY WOULD BE ILLEGAL - think here, if I need to spell it out, I will but don't distract from the point)

    What's the point?

IT'S TIME TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER BY WAY OF AN ACTUAL STUDY WHICH CAN BE ONE IN-HOUSE BY UNT GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF TRANSITIONING TO DII SOONER RATHER THAN LATER AND THE COST OF DOING SO VERSUS NOT DOING SO - ALL FACTORS TO BE INCLUDED.

I'm talking about a business decision that is the best decision for the University moving forward.

I'm talking about being a realist vs. idealist.

    I'm talking about being responsible.

    I'm talking about forward thinking.

I'm talking about reading the writing on the wall.

    Do I want this? NO

Is it avoidable? YES - By someone or some group coming up with MILLIONS of dollars every year in NIL money for UNT Student Athletes.

Is that possible? NO - that's the bottom line and Stone Cold doesn't need to say so, it's sooo obvious!

So what are we going to do?  Probably the most irresponsible thing:

Bury our heads in the sand, avoid the inevitable, keep paying out fat salaries and burning money to try and keep (what exactly, I'm not sure) alive, and then in a few years and millions of dollars wasted, say, "well, we tried."

GO D2 AND DOMINATE EARLY FOR A BETTER FUTURE!

BS - You don't need a crystal ball for this one, just a delusional perspective.

Do you like the direction this is going? That schools with lots of money and fans are just buying players? That agents are now involved?

Because a gigantic school that has loathed athletics for decades isn't gonna play real well in that pool...

Kind of yes. It's less fun for us because we aren't the ones buying players, but for the players - yes it's past time.

I mean no it should be a different system, but that isn't reality.

Also, the group that really loves how this is going is the NFL. Who gets a free minor league system to develop/pay players without investment from them.

  3. I get that it hurts, but why is it that all of these players who are finally getting paid result in blaming the players for this, when there are so many other people making millions off the sport?

Anyone should be allowed to do this. What you all want is the NFL, where there is a salary cap and everyone shares in the spoils. But it's not set up that way, and the rich don't generally ever volunteer to share.

And you’re definitely right about comparing to previous coaches.  Want to accept SL’s record & “how hard he’s trying”?  Go ahead & keep those low expectations.  Just go out there & enjoy tailgating & watching a game involving your Alma Mater.  No problem!  Crank them prices back down, hire some old retread & let him retire here, or some hotshot coordinator like SL, & let him leave if he wins.  Stop trying to be anything more.

Or, demand more out of the person that influences the product on the field more than anyone else.

Yeah, well it isn't necessary curse at a coach to get them angry. All you have to do is speak the truth "HEY! WE'RE GETTIN' OUT COACHED".  For the coaches with inflated egos, they tend to take great exception to that loud observation.,,,,😎

Cry some more boomer. I wasn’t using profanity, because I know it offends your childish sensitivities. There’s plenty of old codgers like yourself over there.

Heckling amateurs is uncool. As soon as these players start getting paid and selling their own merch then ....oh nvm, have at it.

This is not a gripe, but I felt like UNT's pep band got overshadowed by Texas State's band last night.  That should NEVER happen.  TSU did have a bigger band, and were augmented by low brass that UNT didn't have, but I thought they were tighter and it just wasn't UNT's best showing.

On the bright side, UNT's cheer and pom >> TSU's.  Felt kind of bad for TSU regarding that aspect of the presentation.

This is important stuff.  Worthy of concern.

As much as the marching band has improved for FB games, the basketball band has gotten worse. I mean we can't be good in football and basketball at the same time, in sports or in music. Don't be greedy 😅

that you're all pretty much just the worst fans. nay...people. the worst people.

what is it that you expected tonight? it's March...this is exactly what meaningful basketball games in March look like.

what is it you think you're entitled to? a 20 point win just because it's a lesser conference team? I'm pretty sure Purdue thought that last year, too.

the posts in tonight's game thread are some of the most embarrassing, myopic and just plain ignorant I've read in 15 years on this board. yes...this team has flaws...we're a bad free throw shooting team, our offense can bog down, we play a super short bench...hell...in my 20-ish years following UNT basketball, this team in terms of actual basketball talent might not crack the top 10...

well this flawed, under-talented team set multiple school records, was a legit top 75 program, got more national publicity than we have since I've known where UNT was located, was legitimately in a conversation for an at-large bid, and, win or lose tonight, just treated all you to an NIT classic, hosted on our home floor...and, as they have multiple times this year, won in clutch style.

and how do you privileged asshats respond? that because TSU is in the Sun Belt (a conference we were slightly better than mediocre in not ten years ago) a loss would set the program back 20 years? I really hope we just burn tonight's game thread.

this thread was going up win or lose. I get having passion...I get being caught up in emotion...but the overall lack of perspective from tonight's game thread is some of the most cringe-worthy shit ever posted on GMG. and unlike Grant, there is a deeeeeeeep bench for shit on GMG.

Great post about the team and what we've enjoyed this season. Although now, even though I didn't want to read the game thread, I kind of have to? Thanks a lot for that.

You guys can be my guest and fire away but when does the recruiting tick up? 2 consecutive NCAA/NIT bids and we continue to go after/sign the same type guys. (As though the program has not had any success)

Yes, the bar for me has risen but with a stronger bench, maybe we can advance the program even further. Without 2 buzzer beaters from Tylor Perry nor notable injuries/sickness this year, this could have been a .500 season. I don’t see this target as someone taking the program to the next level; to compete with SMU, TCU, UH or some other future AAC members.

Hope the coaching staff doesn’t get complacent.

Gotta agree. It's at least a little confusing.

I get you...but we probably do.

look, The Drum in Austin is awesome. It's also dated and UT is replacing it...at least as a primary hoops arena.

if basketball continues on this arc and we can get UNT mentioned in breath with St. Mary's, Davidson, Wichita State, Murray State, et al on a consistent basis, then UNT basketball deserves a 8000 person fieldhouse-style basketball only venue. Wanna do a throw-back game in the Pit? dope, let's.

nostalgia is not a reason to withstand growth and change.

You tried, but he really likes baseball and if he doesn't get it, he is taking his ball and going home.

On the plus side though, imagine the complaints here if we build that 6,500 seat building, and it starts selling out and there's a waiting list for season tickets, and the price goes way up.

On the road for work, so only catching up on everything now…some quick observations…

    - presumably it’s the same basketball venue, but back in the JJ era, FAU made the deliberate decision to shrink their venue capacity with the idea a more intimate arena would create a better atmosphere. I don’t hate that idea.

    - I’m maybe there most critical poster of Thomas Bell, or at least his role in the team…but as I sat at dinner impatiently waiting for Gamecast to update the last two minutes, every time I saw UNT had scored I said to myself, “Bell got those buckets” and I was right

    - we just won a game with a 3:16 assist to turnover ratio. Someone please explain that to me

    -  we lose this game, not to mention LaTech, Western, Marshall…if we had beaten Buffalo earlier this season. That loss is why we’re here. @Andrew

Let me take your points one at a time.

    • presumably it’s the same basketball venue, but back in the JJ era, FAU made the deliberate decision to shrink their venue capacity with the idea a more intimate arena would create a better atmosphere. I don’t hate that idea.
Yep, we need a new arena about half the size of the pit. With the 4K we can get in there easily now it would feel completely different. Hold a part for 3K in a 10K warehouse and it looks terrible. Pack it into a 3K night club and it is rocking.

Bell is the key to all things good. All those what are we doing early in the season moments when we repeatedly fed him down low and he turned it over, is paying off now.
