I like a tight rotation, but the rotation has also gotten a lot tighter this year...it's legit 7 dudes at this point...starters + Perry & Scott. last season Rubin & Abou were the primary bench players, but you got decent minutes from Terrence Lewis, Jalen Jackson, Mykell Robinson...most of the time in how you're describing...like a match-up based 8th man...some nights you need a guard, some nights some fouls from a PF.

I do think that speaks to trust...which then in turn speaks to recruiting. it looks like Grant had some swings and misses this year.

that said, he's also landed Perry and Scott this year...Hamlett, Reese, Abou, Rubin...it's not like he can't recruit and with the nature of college sports right now, it's not like missing on scholarships is terribly punitive long-term...if kids aren't playing they leave and you get your scholarships right back.

I'd love to have one more trusted rotation player, but it's unlikely at this point.

He definitely doesn't trust anyone else on the roster at this point. I do remember that last year though somewhere during conference time all of the sudden Mykell Robinson did start getting minutes. So hopefully someone else is getting close to contributing.

Ultimately my biggest gripe is that recruiting still feels largely like it did when he got here. Trying to find value in JUCOs who High Majors tend to ignore. We haven’t seen anything like the 2011 class which JJ secured after a 15-seed first round tourney exit.

Mccasland has had great success and it does look like the program is continuing to elevate even if we don’t win a tournament game again this season. That’s the most important thing and I’m happy about that. Just feels like recruiting is lagging behind the on-court product.

it will be interesting to see how this season turns out. The lack of improved recruiting is showing up at the end of games. Who do we have who can hit a big shot? Perry can but can he even get one off?
At the moment there aren't any other go to guys. Last year we had 3.

  3. I'll probably be put on blast for this but have you seen the QB position? We have a shortstop as our starter. I'm no expert but his best throws are when he throws like a shortstop, examples - throw to Brown at end of UTEP game, and the pass to Lyles in the FIU game. Watch those throws and he looks like a baseball player and extremely accurate with them. Dude has 6 years of baseball mechanics to change. That is a lot of coaching up.

All that is probably why Ruder started the year as the No. 1 but he couldn't get it together.

And of course this all on the staff, just pointing it out.

Dillion Williams has played Corner all year. Was listed as a safety but has been at corner since the clips started coming out of fall camp. I believe Cinque has been in that nickel role.

Williams was ahead of Texada earlier in the year but was injured and I think that’s when Texada passed him. Williams was active this past game so we could see his reps start going back up now.

Thanks. Names on the back of jerseys would help with knowing who is on the field. Crap, now I'm officially old. 🧓

It's amazing how, seemingly every year, our next RB just emerges.  One right after the other.  Then we have "our guy": reliable and don't really need to worry about him.  The following year, the next RB "emerges" and he's next in line.

nothing about our RB position has been forced or (rarely) questioned.  Wish we could be saying the same about the QB position.

I used to think this way, but I haven't since Wilson left. Doesn't seem like we have running backs on that level.

Once QB is outside of the tackle box only requirement to avoid grounding is for the ball to cross the line of scrimmage. The rule for forward pass doesn’t require facing the target. A few schools have run a trick play where the QB fakes a handoff and turns his back to the line of scrimmage then flips the ball over his head.

The kicker on this is the defender trying to get the QB under control ends up pushing him toward the line of scrimmage so there is forward progress.

By fluke I happened to tune in just before it happened and initially thought wow, and then it dawned on me, out of pocket, legal forward pass, forward progress, it’s an incomplete pass.

I immediately dashed off an email to Steve Shaw so it might show up in this week’s rules review video.

it's too bad that they can't let humans make decisions. The rule to protect a players safety is great. However, in this case it wasn't to do that, he just didn't want to lose yards. Let the refs make that determination and call it a safety.

I think in late 2018, we all thought our current guy was the guy like Fran you're talking about.  A hungry guy on his way up!  It really sucks what happened to Coach Littrell.

I don't know that he was/is smoke & mirrors.   I think he has coaching ability.
I honestly think something changed in him though.  Sometime between those negotiations in December 2018, and early in the 2019 season.
I really think he's beaten now.   Just going through motions.  No fire anymore.  That's why some people on GMG.com call him "mumbles".  Just low-energy & beaten.  Definitely not the same guy jumping around on the sidelines in 2017.

He lost a lot of his early staff and didn't replace that well. Coaching matters as much talent.

I bet right now this is a tug-of-war between various interests, but ultimately the school’s presidents have the final say. The commissioner and the ADs work for them, they work for the chancellors, and so on. The presidents likely favor regionalization. From an academic standpoint, it means less travel for student-athletes. From a financial standpoint, the media rights likely don’t offset the added travel expenses anymore.

For the athletic directors, they know that being in a perceived “superior” conference gives them a recruiting advantage. Also, for the AAC teams at least, they may still be hoping for a larger media deal than CUSA and to basically kill off any competitors for the guaranteed G5 spot in the playoffs. Aresco probably has the same thoughts as the AAC ADs and Judy is just trying to avoid going the way of the WAC if this gets out of hand. She has a fiduciary duty to all her members, and those left over will be in serious trouble if they don’t find a new home, especially if the AAC nabs 4-6 programs.

This could get interesting. I don’t think it’s as far fetched as some people think, but it’s going to be a question of who wins out at the end of the day. If the CUSA presidents say they prefer this plan to going to the AAC, they may force their hand. The fact they are listening and haven’t already jumped ship is telling.

As fans I think we should hope for regionalization, especially since this is with the AAC and not the Sun Belt. These regional rivalries would be a lot of fun with a few higher quality teams.

I was following along until you said that. I realized then you were punking us and this isn't even the right depth chart.

I would be thrilled if Aune can come in and complete a decent percentage of passes (60+%). I just don't understand why we haven't been able to find baseline capability at QB in an Air Raid offense since Mason left. I get not being able to replace Fine, but I refuse to accept it's THIS hard, especially with all the transfers these days. We have two QBs with really rough mechanics and they've been in the game a while.

So hopefully Aune looks like he suddenly turned a page and is amazing, but if not, then I'm definitely turning MY sights elsewhere for the last few games of the season. But if we're not laying complete eggs, I doubt Littrell makes a real move. He'll probably just jerk back and forth between Ruder and Aune until the end of the year like he did last year.

So for all of our sanity and the sake of our program, I hope Aune goes out there and completes 70% of his passes and throws 5 TDs vs Mizzou. I really don't want to feel like we're still searching for answers at the most important position to get right.

If that doesn't happen, I'll be counting down until the last 4 games of the season when we won't be burning Drummond's RS, so maybe we can start looking to the future. But I'm probably kidding myself.

I mean we went from Harrell to what coaching them? This is most likely where the problem lies.

  10. Unfortunately it seems he isn't a good fit as a head coach. It seems obvious that the success he had early was about his assistant coaches. Once he lost most of that first staff things have gone the wrong direction. He should have been either able to get good replacements or make up the difference himself, but has not been able to.

Some other program will get the benefits of the lessons he's learned, but a new direction is needed.

I felt like this deserved it's own thread.

I believe @UNT86 broke down UAB's defensive scheme well, and during yesterday's coach/player pressers, Littrell & Ruder both confirmed what UNT86 was saying about their 5-man (sometimes 4) front.
UAB played an ultra-conservative, base cover 2 defense, only rushing 3 or 4 on most plays with only 5 men in the box.  This means NT should be able to run the ball effectively until UAB adjusts to the gains we're making in the run game & bring more hats into the box, which would open up the pass game some.     5 OL VS 3 DL & 2 LBs (so 1:1) should favor the big uglies almost every time.   4 WRs/TEs VS 6 DBs does NOT favor the passing game.
I would expect the Offensive Line to be able to capitalize on this.   We have some nice players on the OL, and Coach Bloesch showed last season he could get them coached up to be an effective unit.   I don't know if NT put a lot of blocking scheme on tape for UAB to realize they could keep the run game in check with just their base D, but that's exactly what happened.   So I wanted to look back specifically at the run game.

Here's a 3-man front with 2 LBs, which was pretty much their base all night.

I mean, Gabe Blair is gonna be a fantastic guard for us in the future, but here, he released from helping seal the Nose Tackle, and looked completely lost as to who he was supposed to block next, while his man (the Mike) plugged the hole and tackled Torrey for the loss.  This was happening constantly, not just with Blair but all over the interior.  These guys have to get off their original block and find the LB they're responsible for!   WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RUN THE BALL AGAINST THAT FRONT.   If you keep watching the next play, Blair gets firmly planted.  I understand growing pains, but man, we're trying to win games.  If he's not ready, find someone who is.

    Then,
I know this was pass pro, but Great Googly Moogly, What the heck was our all-conference RT doing here?  The entire OL moved at the snap, and he's taking a nap!

Now, in the 3rd quarter with the game firmly in hand for UAB 😥, we see their 2nd-stringers (same base defense), and get 3 straight run plays.  The first, looked to be a play off left Tackle.  Brown seals it very well... so well, he prevents Blair from getting upfield to block the Mike.  Pirtle comes over to pick up the OLB, but by the time he's there, both the OLB & Mike are there to meet him.  I'm no mathematician, but 1 TE is gonna have a hard time blocking 2 LBs.  Torrey goes nowhere.
Then, a perfectly executed play where Brammer pulls & destroys a DB for a nice gain!  Yeah!!
...Immediately followed by what looked like was supposed to be a run into the right B Gap.  Carroll does a nice job sealing the guard, but Brammer can't get on the End, who crashes that gap (not necessarily Brammer's fault there, just a nice play by the End).  Brown is pulling from the left side, looking to truck whatever LB is coming in that gap, but the play is already f'ed.  Ragsdale adjusts into whatever daylight he can find inside, but if he bounced outside with Brown blocking the LB out there, he might have picked up 4-5 yds:

I didn't want to watch much more.  It's just demoralizing.

I'm not sure how much of this was preparation by UAB (probably A LOT), and how much was just poor execution by our OL, but man, the OL has to do better.
