  1. --- I don't blame politicians.. either party ..state or local ... We have as few police that don't need to be there and make bad decisions (some who just like to order people around) and quite a few "citizens" that are totally stupid and can't seem to realize that police need and should shoot when confronted by as person with a weapon or a person disregarding there commands and moving toward them... Toss in there are racists in every group... NOT just the white guys.. .
  2. Everyone that disagrees with UNT90 on anything... he has kicked it up ... we were once just socialist and LIBERALS . hahahaha.. maybe it is just a 4th of July thing....
  3. CORRECT... internships are often "extended" job interviews ... and can lead to permanent jobs... That happened to both of my engineering sons. The company gets "to try them out" and see if they are capable and fit in ok"... I don't see any problem with asking about a dress code as an individual but not organize or protest it beyond a simple question and let it go if the answer is no. At one time where I taught, we were "required" to wear a tie .... well some didn't... shop teachers... Chemistry/science ones often didn't (fire issue) . If there is a reason to go against the guideline ... questioning it MIGHT make sense.
  4. Dress codes usually make sense..... [ a few are nuts ] if none existed there is often someone that would show up dressed inappropriately for the job (or school) or offensive to others (customers?) Some would even dress to the point of dressing dangerously... loose clothing around machines for example. They should have learned ... they don't make the rules .... especially a new employee..... If they can't live with the system ... leave.... that would even apply to a Hooter's employee. They too have a dress code ... just not like most job dress codes.. ... Crazy one... several years ago a large oil company here required male employees to wear black or dark blue suits and a plain white shirt ... Their employees resembled a bunch penguins... none of the other companies here did.. just dress clothes in their offices...
  5. Surprised no one has commented on their success over the "BIGs" and even took out two Big-12 teams along the way.
  6. Interesting example..... there were people in the admistaration then that had heard of foreigners taking flying lessons but not very interested in how to land or take off.... They did nothing and... 9-11 happened.. Which administration did this occur in.??? .
  7. Likely they might have come anyway... my father's side came because of poor economic conditions in the 1800's.. I have been in Europe a dozen times or so ... I would not describe it like you did... in fact Northern Europe is very modern and advanced...
  8. The pope once declared the world was flat...... based on the passage..." spread the word to the four corners of the earth" ..... and we all know spheres don't have corners.. The Inquisition killed a lot of people that dared question the Pope on anything (infallible) .......There are still a lot of odd people out there that come up with some crazy conclusions including those who think the world began about 5000-6000 years ago and want that taught in public schools... [ unfortunately some have been on the Texas State School Board .. may still be some ]. . I have even known of a religious group locally that thinks "pep rallies" are idol worship...
  9. IE. .... If they don't say what you want to be true .. they are partisan to Democrats.... and liberals etc. Suppose something happens in a classroom or situation and one kid (or person) tell one story of the event and all the rest tell a different story but similar story ... Which is likely the truth...?? Same applies in a courtroom. ... but only one news source tell the truth...?? the rest ... nope they favor the other guys. ... hmmmm..
  10. Keep them or out ... what does it matter ..... there has to be armed towers for a "wall" to work.. and it wasn't along some river 100's of miles long. Even The Great Wall of China, Hadians Wall in Britain in Roman times , and the Soviet wall had armed guards (towers) on it. ...also the walled cities of medieval times.... .
  11. Of course..... Everyone should listen to both sides of issues to make up an intelligent decision.... never have I voted straight ticket .. both parties have their idiots and good people... Don't you to listen to both sides of an issues...??? or do you just do as someone tells you to vote or decide on anything. If you listen to Fox you really do not understand what other parties and candidate believe.... it sure isn't whast they claim most of teh time.... people in the other party are also patriotic, mostly Christian, do believe in changeand also intelligent.. [ remember women could not vote until 1920 and all of the gender and racial things put into place during the 60's-70's ], Until then (I am assuming you are younger) i doubt you saw the changes and differences I have seen.. ... few women doctors, lawyers, engineers, or in positions of responsibility when I went to college.. .. and even the blacks in my HS graduating class could not go to any SWC , ACC, or SEC college or even the Baptist college in my hometown.. and most lived less than two miles away from it.. That changed in the 60's and 70's. I could not conduct business or vote at 18 but I could be sent to Nam ... that has changed. Suppose something happens in a classroom or situation and one kid (or person) tell one story of the event and all the rest tell a different story but similar story ... Which is likely the truth...?? The one or the many..?? The same happens with witnesses in a courtroom.... you listen to both sides and make up your mind bases on what you hear from BOTH sides. .. That pretty much describes the Media now ... one network says one thing and nearly all the rest (and printed media) tell things different..... intelligent people listen to both sides and make up their mind as to how things really are.... Some people if they hear something they don't want to be true .. yell LIBERAL ... even if it is true.. Sounds like what has happened in some bad countries in the past. Me.. financially I am very conservative... [ hate the national debt which started climbing in 2001 ...] Other issues which one..?? some I am conservative on some I would say liberal or progressive fits better.... Times and conditions change... Gays .. I don't get it but just leave them alone, they are not bothering me.... I don't have to be their buddy... .. transgender I don't understand at all..... Many more.... I hate paying taxes ..but... we have them to pay have a good military and a safe country, need a court system, law enforcement , schools, hospitals, food inspections, drug inspections, border security and much more .... most tea-party types just don't understand at all that taxes are needed .. that is why are are great compared to many countries..... we have those.... and we have to pay for them..... . War.... stay out of them as much as possible... and make absolutely sure there is good justification for getting into one.... there wasn't in last one... no WMD and CIA never said there was ( Cheney especially was lying like crazy..claimed he knew where they were ). The crazy thing we had always increased taxes to pay for every war we have been in ..... but not this last one... we cut taxes and the debt soared.... Stupid. Debt was less than 6 trillion in 2001 after 210 years... $11 trillion eight years later and about $18 now .... which party controlled Congress nearly all that time.... the so-called conservative one...... They aren't, not financially. . Are things better in Middle East than before we invaded .. nope... ISIS is there,.. It cost us money and lives and made things worse. Even every GOP candidate (except JEB) claimed it was a bad mistake... Hope you really read and actually listen to both sides of issues. I am not telling you what to believe... just be open minded and determine what you think is really true. .
  12. Listen to Trump again.. he has said it .... but he changes what he says at every stop to please the crowd. [besides calling everyone some unflattering name ... he did that to every other GOP candidate and the crowds found it entertaining and laughed ] ... He has said it.. the entire border .. who knows what he said last... ... and later he said he was going to make Mexico pay for it and build it on their side.... REALLY.??? ... How do you make them ??? .. invade them ..??? makes no sense.... a stupid comment. !! .... nearly impossible, not secure either in remote places , the expense might be trillions.... He also is going to make America great again.... really ......I have been in about 20 foreign countries and we are already pretty great... and a whole lot better than some, actually most ... but most northern European ones are very good also but all have their individual problems.. they are far from backward..just smaller and with a lot less military power... i was seeing cell phones and flat screens TVs and cash registers there several years before they were common here. [remember Nokia, Ericson, Phillips, and some other companies were from there... not such big names here now but were 15-20 years ago... Japanese names have overtaken them ] .. a bit odd and maybe gross but I was also seeing auto-flush toilets there way before they showed up here. Mass transportation is light-years ahead of us.... We are still the leader of the world in most areas... His claim is a dumb comment. ..... if you understand what other places are like. ... People who want a good living here need to understand an education in a "needed" field (not likely Egyptian history) will get them a good living ..... electronics have made many jobs gone .... seen any rooms full of typists, bookkeepers, or phone operators lately... or many more jobs ( Even oil industry) . ... obsolete.... we now live in a high tech world. Jobs that anyone can do (sell burgers, shovel dirt, mow grass) ... do not pay much....
  13. I agree Rick .... but a damn fence is completely stupid in most areas..... . Near an urban area .. maybe so ......but in remote places especially along most of the Rio Grande... really, really stupid. To me the bigger problem is the illegal Asian and Middle Eastern immigration.... not the Hispanic ones . ...which ones are the terrorists.... ??? it worked for the USSR etc. to have fences ... but they were also manned with guard towers and machine guns at close intervals and not along some River...
  14. YES.... You can register to vote when you get as drivers license..... same rules apply though .. must be 30 days ahead of an election in order to vote.......BUT... at least in this county (Midland) I do not recommend it ... we have had BIG problems with them not sending the forms over in time or at all.. We are a bit unique in that our driver's license location is WAY too busy due to the recent oil boom and still under staffed (thank the Texas Legislature partially, way under funded) ... long lines here... Despite the drop in oil prices .. that is still true. I even had a friend that went to Big Spring today to get a Texas drivers license again (just moved back) ... way too busy here with long lines. Here it is far better to register at the election office which is located (here) at the same building license plates are purchased. Where-ever you are that is likely the best method by far.... the election office.... and second ..... some location or booth that is doing voter registration and nothing else. Mexico .. don't know their rules ..... maybe they have same voting standards and regulations nation-wide so a voting card might make sense. ... we don't.... Each state makes up a lot of the standards themselves... not entirely but voting standards are not the nation-wide in USA.... that is one of the reasons only national popular vote would be a bad idea. Some states people register to vote in a particular party primary but in Texas you get to chose which on election day.... with the computer system we have in this county it would be impossible to vote in both... don't know about others but very illegal and would get caught and arrested.. .. Texas has a 30 day waiting period, some have less, and some (Pennsylvania for one I think) can register that day and vote... Bad idea. --no way to really check that they are qualified [ legal citizen or live where they claim ]
  15. As I said.... in past 125 years (modern times) ... only one time did the person win that did not have the most votes. ... What I said is correct. before that three times it did happen and with a lot fewer states and less population.. Also a lot easier to have voter fraud then because of poor communication and other issues. ... . We do have to use a voter ID in Texas... most use a driver's licence or state ID or even passport (seen several) which absolutely require American citizenship... .... and Texas requires 30 advance registration... which can be used to check citizenship.... or that they were born when and where they claim.... gen-worth lists it. Not that difficult. Some states... nope ... they even use same day registration and don't purge voting rolls like Texas does... .. and would be easier to someone to "cheat" i those states systems. Without the same standards for every state... total popular vote would be a problem. I have worked as a election judge several times don't understand what you are trying to say... everything I said was true ...and we do have as very good secure system using a picture ID [ except mail-in votes] ... My only complaint is for people over 75 or so ... why not let them use an expired drivers licence (with a picture that is obviously them ) if they no longer drive... Some have a difficult time to go get an ID.. .especially in scattered West Texas. ..With the oil boom here (Midland/Odessa) people often were having to wait in line 3-4 hours also (ridiculous but true ... so many people just moved here) .. Here the computers at our voting desk lists name, age (birthdate), address, and other info besides just seeing their picture on their license. .
  16. No one likes taxes (includes me) but Cruz is nuts..... Some don't seem to understand taxes pay for our military, court system, law endorsement, fire protection, food inspections, drug inspections, schools, paved roads, parks, and so much more needed items. .... Now we have a group controlling Congress that has increased the national debt from less than $6 trillion as of 2001 to about $18 trillion now... When they cut taxes ... they also have to cut spending and Congress is the "branch" that does that .... Not the White House (either party) or the Supreme court. The current group there claims to be conservative .. well they are not.. they are the liberals... a financial conservative does not run up the debt. . .... If this continues we will be in the same financial boat as Greece and Portugal.... a bankrupt government... The ones that NOW say they are conservative .... are not.... just pay attention to real facts.. not Faux facts. .... You have to pay for the services you get... expenses need to be cut when taxes are cut. [ starting a war hunting "bogus" nuke weapons didn't help any... trillions have been spent in that area since..... war is not free... lives or money ] . Cruz just says what people want to hear and want to be true ... but isn't... That is why he doesn't have one friend in Congress... He makes no sense. I hope he gets replaced by someone in his next election (of either party).... He is completely ineffective.
  17. Only once in the past 125+ years has the person with the most popular vote not won ....... W.Bush over Gore.... Problem I with popular vote: Not all states have the same voting standards or even registration system .... some even allow people to register and vote the same day which which is an invitation to corruption. Texas requires people to register 30 days prior to an election and even then they do not declare which party which some states require at registration time.... Popular vote makes no sense at all when states have different voting "standards" and regulations. Pretty tough to have voter corruption in Texas with our system which also purges lists every two year of people moved etc. (some don't)... Both parties are supposed to be represented at all polling sites also ... the only real weakness in Texas --- "mail ins" ... no picture ID or any ID and the voter is never seen. Problem II ... the 2000 election was total chaos in Florida mostly due to different style ballots and some not very good ones either...... Can you imagine the mess the USA would have if the national popular vote was only a few 1000 or 100 apart...... we would have 50 "Florida messes" of trying to find vote and in almost every town... I understand not liking the current system of an electoral college but it is better than the alternative....because of different voting standards of states, voting ballot problems, and the possibility of 50 "chaos states" in a close election. Only 1 of the last 30+ Presidential elections did the person with the most votes not win..... W.Bush over Gore. ... and it was very close on popular vote [ less than 1% difference I think ] .
  18. ---- Seems about every group [except British names] has had their turn at being made fun of, mistrusted etc. My father's family still spoke German as well as English until 1918.... German speakers were not trusted at that point..... because of WWI. They had been in America since the 1850's. there was at least one of my distant family members that changed the spelling of his last name to make it sound more "American".... I have heard that there are a number of people did the same such as Schneider became Snyder etc. and a lot started used using more American sounding first names ... Carl not Karl or William instead of Wilhelm... Read Lou Gehrig's biography and see what he went through... about same thing in WWI when he was growing up... . I am not sure this related but have heard it was....Stanton, Texas was once Marienfeld, Texas [ Mary's field in German] .... just not sure. A street in Midland still has that name referring to that town, a train stop on the MKT RR. . There is nothing new about mistrust or making fun of other ethic groups or religions.... ask the Irish, Polish, Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese,German, Dutch, Jewish, Italians, Mormons, African, and many others.... Probably the KKK types could name a few more that aren't "real" Americans.
  19. Bad moment in history .... [but we haven't learned much ] unfortunately there is a guy for President now running that thinks about the same for Hispanics... seems to think they are all drug dealers and criminals etc. Seems to want to send them all back. He has made a lot of similar comments about "another group" as well.. Had a "friend" say about the same lately and then I mentioned Eva Longoria claimed to be a 13th generation Texan on a late show the night before ... the "friend" said that is impossible.... I then told him her family came here on a Spanish land grant in the 1600's. She laughed her family didn't jump the border ... the border jumped them.... hahaha .. the friend ?? --- His family has been in Texas less than 40 years.... not 300+. ....... Guess he had not noticed so many towns and rivers have Spanish Names... even the Trinity was originally named Trinidad.. The candidate seems to think we can build a fence along the Rio Grande....ever been there..??? How the do cattle ranchers provide water for cattle and don't forget ... lot of wild animals -- deer, antelope, raccoons and others get their water there also. ... 10,000's would die. .plus how will the Pecos River and other rivers and creeks empty ...into a fence?? Daming them all up is ridiculous and impossible. ...... A total non-thinker ...just says what some people want to hear...
  20. Part of it can be attributed to the fact we won ONE? game.... and a lot people I know were disgusted with the effort shown on the field as well.. Both of those do not help contributions to the football program... Why care when the players don't seem to. ..... Hopefully things will be much better this year..... wins and player effort as perceived. .
  21. Cerebus .. I agree .... We need to remember in that era nearly all countries had Royal families [ ie. near dictatorships ] Britain with a Parliament may have been the closest to what the USA created but it wasn't really very close then... The King and royalty still had great power then...and France was still a few years away from overthrowing their royal family.. I find it odd that many consider our forefathers conservatives..... they made unheard of changes in government... these guys were not conservative... Real conservatives ( Tories then) didn't like much change.. The signers of the Constitution likely felt our system would be hard to keep especially with an unarmed public. The 2nd amendment wasn't put in so people could carry a gun around with them to stores and where-ever ... it was mostly about trying to keep a democratic system... The other "items" mentioned were probably issues as well but not the BIG one.
  22. Also.. I suppose Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, et. al. had firearms but I doubt they carried one with them all the time when they walked around town. I doubt that was their intent when passing the 2nd amendment.. Probably more about providing protection from Indians, hunting food, invasions, dictatorial government, and protecting one's home. Times have changed. Darn liberals even let women vote now...
  23. And hopefully not one who thinks the world started 6000 years ago and want to screw up all science, biology, geology, and history textbooks. One crazy book that appeared in Florida schools lately referred to slaves as African workers. that particular AMERICA HISTORY textbook also mentioned Moses more than Jefferson.. who was President, Vice-President, wrote the Declaration of Independence, and had great influence on the Constitution.... Hard to believe but true. The Texas School board has immense power (influence) in the USA on textbooks because the State of Texas is the largest purchaser of textbooks in America... Textbook companies often try to please our state to get their name on our 4-6 book adoption list...... Other states do not do what we do in that regard... Then local Texas districts pick a book from those lists for every subject... That is a HUGE reason to pay attention to who gets elected or selected to that board.....don't want some crazy extremist group controlling it. Other states often buy those same books also... Most people do not realize the real power of the Texas State school board..... don't want crazies like the one mentioned in above post on it.
