  2. North Texas DENTON (9/12/06) – As if beating SMU 24-6 wasn’t enough on it’s own, on Monday the North Texas football team was named the Division I-A Team of the Week by CollegeSportsReport.com. Others receiving consideration for the award were California, Missouri, Notre Dame, and Ohio State for their win over Texas in Austin. The Tennessee Volunteers were named the week one winner of the award. The victory over SMU was only the fourth in North Texas history and the first since 1990. After coming off of a 56-7 loss to the defending national champion Texas Longhorns, it was Woody Wilson coming off the bench at quarterback to total 177 yards of offense and Johnny Quinn had his fourth 100-yard game of his career to subdue the Mustangs. Evan Robertson blocked and recovered a punt for a touchdown to give the Mean Green the lead after the game’s first possession. Jamario Thomas wore down the SMU defense for 90 yards on 25 carries, including 81 yards and a touchdown in the second half. The Mean Green defense held SMU’s spread offense to only 270 yards and three turnovers on the night. North Texas will travel to the defending Conference USA champion, Tulsa on Saturday. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. from Skelly Stadium. The game can be heard on KWRD 100.7 FM or KNTU 88.1 FM.

  11. http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...0&ATCLID=588538 DALLAS, Texas (8/31/06) - The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum today announced North Texas junior Jamario Thomas among the list of candidates for the 2006 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s top college running back. Thomas, who led the nation in rushing in 2004 with 180.1 yards per game, returns as the Mean Green feature back after he was hampered by an injury for much of last season. He is the only Sun Belt player to make the list, and one of only five players from the Lone Star State. This is Thomas' second appearance on the Doak Walker watch list. Thomas set a North Texas and Sun Belt Conference record with 1,801 yards in 2004, as well as the NCAA freshman record for 200 yards games, going over that mark five times. He tied the NCAA record for the fastest to reach 1,000 yards when he made it in seven games, and is one of only three freshmen ever to rush for over 1,800 yards. The field of candidates includes Louisville senior Michael Bush who led the nation in scoring (14.4 points per game) in 2005; Auburn senior Kenny Irons who was the SEC’s leading rusher (1,293 yards) last season; California junior Marshawn Lynch who is the nation’s second-ranked returning rusher (1,246 yards); Oklahoma junior Adrian Peterson who led Big 12 running backs in rushing (1,108 yards) in 2005; and Northern Illinois senior Garrett Wolfe, the nation’s leading returning rusher (1,580 yards). The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on Nov. 15, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote to determine the finalists on Nov. 16. The committee will cast a second vote on Nov. 27 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives. The recipient of the 2006 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN along with other NCFAA member awards on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 7. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at The Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007. Former USC running back Reggie Bush, first-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints, won the 2005 Doak Walker Award. The award, in its 17th year, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
  12. Agreed! That might have been true during the early 90's but things are way different than they are now. I remember going to a day game back in the mid 90's and hardly anybody was there. It might have been no more than 3K that day, it was really sad. Now forward 10 years or so and things are much better.
  13. Better yet, when was the last time we had a transfer enroll at NT to play football?
  14. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2564945 JONESBORO, Ark. -- Arkansas State lost its leading returning rusher for the season because of a knee injury. Chris Easley tore his anterior cruciate ligament in practice last week while changing direction as he carried the ball. Indians coach Steve Roberts said running back Reginald Arnold, a redshirt freshman, will start Saturday in the season-opener against Army, with Chris James also getting playing time. Roberts said fullback Oren O'Neal might also play. Easley was considered a top candidate to replace Antonio Warren and Shermar Bracey as Arkansas State's top running back. Warren rushed for 1,066 yards last season and Bracey added 699, but both were seniors. Easley missed the 2004 season because of a knee injury, but returned in '05 and ran for 187 yards on 32 carries. He is expected to have surgery this week.
  15. the evil empire 41 the good guys 10 As much as I hate to admit but they have tons of talent on their side. However, I am praying for an upset.
  16. Link 1 of 11 No. 10 Jamario Thomas, RB Jr., North Texas He led the nation in rushing (1,801 yards and 18 touchdowns) as a freshman, but only ran for 361 yards last season because of a nagging hamstring injury and the return of Patrick Cobbs to the lineup. Thomas isn't the biggest back in the country (5- 11, 195 pounds), but he's one of the fastest.
  17. Texas' new scoreboard is 55 feet tall and 134 feet wide and cost $8 million.
