  8. After no-hitter, Fowler wins pitcher of the week By Lindsay Williams Staff Writer March 09, 2006 Kristina Fowler will pitch with an added boost of confidence this season after being named Sun Belt Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week. Fowler, Meeker, Okla., sophomore, received the honor after her performance in last week’s victories over Louisiana-Monroe. In the doubleheader on March 1, Fowler pitched a no-hitter in game one, the first in the history of NT softball. The game was ended early when NT run-ruled Monroe 8-0 in the fifth. “(I was) more excited that we were able to put that many runs on the board that quick,” Fowler said, “ I want to pitch well enough to put my team in position to win.” In the fifth inning of game two, Fowler, who relieved freshman pitcher Jessica Smith, stuck out three batters allowing one hit in three innings to secure the NT victory. “That’s the first time this year I felt like I pitched like I can,” Fowler said. She said that everything felt right and she was able to take full control of the situation and apply everything she had learned and worked on in the off-season. Fowler saw action quite a few games as a freshmen and has done nothing but improve since. Fowler said that in the off-season assistant coach Keith Berg, who primarily works with pitchers, stepped in and really helped her learn how to set up a batter and how to respond to different pitch counts. Before each game, Fowler studies the scouting reports and gets a feel for the type of hitters she’ll face. “I try to be as relaxed as I can,” she said about her pregame routine, which also includes doing homework before taking the mound.

  12. Too much swagger plays tricks on NT By Rian Johnson Opinion December 01, 2005 The problem with NT this season was that it thought it was the Mean Green. After stealing a victory in Murfreesboro, Tenn., NT returned to Denton with a swagger that a team with little experience is not allowed to have. It bought into the preseason hype that the Sun Belt would probably be decided in the first conference game of the season, and after pulling out the victory it started to believe it had a cakewalk. No one can blame the season on the lack of experience at any position or injuries. The Mean Green was in every game this season and had a chance late in every game to come away from it with a win. That shows that NT had the talent to compete in the conference, especially considering no conference game was decided by a two-possession victory. Therefore, the blame rests in one area; the Mean Green coaching staff. NT simply did not get the most from its team this year, and it starts at the quarterback position. Countless times, Mean Green receivers had to slow up or make adjustments for balls that were poorly thrown from Daniel Meager. While he may have known the offense better than Matt Phillips at the beginning of the season, Meager was not moving the offense at all. The fact that Meager would underthrow anything downfield allowed defenses to cram eight men in the box and eliminate the only consistent part of the Mean Green offense, its running game. The coaching staff was too stubborn to give Phillips a shot at the offense, and when they finally did, it was too late. Another major mistake the Mean Green coaching staff made was trying to please Jamario Thomas and Patrick Cobbs. Rotating running backs does not work, especially when you have no passing game. Sure, they need to be spelled a time or two a game, but swapping them in and out never lets them get into the flow of the game. Need proof of this, just see what Thomas and Cobbs did this season when they knew the other would not be playing. The runner does not have to worry about making mistakes or getting yanked out of the game. It is his show. No, it is not Nick Bazaldua’s fault he did not get kicks off or couldn’t trust his protection. It was not Meager or Phillips’ inexperience at quarterback. It was not injuries on the offensive line, defensive line or secondary. It was not T.J. Covington or Ja’Mel Branch’s fault for all of the personal fouls they were awarded after getting beat. It was the coaches’ fault for not having players that can obviously compete at the conference level prepared game in and game out, and competing at a level they are capable of.
  13. From the Daily Oklahoman: The sports world has been confusing lately. The NBA slam dunk winner stands 5-foot-8 and the 3-point contest winner stands 7-foot. And the slam dunk winner clinched it by going 1-14. The 2 best players in college basketball are white. There are more NFL free agents losing millions than making them. Canada has gotten worse at hockey than America. Pro baseball holds a "true" world series and no one cares. And some people still believe Barry Bonds didn't use steroids. Heh!
  14. aTm finished really strong. they plowed through a pretty good end-of-year schedule including a #2 seed Texas. then they played Texas well in the confrence tournament. I have them picked to upset the #5 seed Syracuse (not that my picks should carry any weight, as a matter of fact that statment should cast serious doubt on my argument). anyway I think that aTm deserved to be in the big dance and maybe got seeded a little low.
  15. BEST DANCE TEAM--LOUISIANA'S RAGIN JAZZ Because I see them all the time, I take them for granted. But after seeing the others, this one isn't even close BEST LOOKING DANCE TEAM--FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL (Men's team dancer division) SECOND BEST LOOKING DANCE TEAM--FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL (Women's team dancer division) They have an A and a B team, I guess. Me gusto mucho las senoritas cubanas. BEST LOOKING CHEERLEADERS--WESTERN KENTUCKY I had to stand up and cheer. any time that best looking and (north) Texas arent in the same sentance I am forced to discount everything elese that is said. Texas has more great looking girls at the local Sonic than Kentucky has in the whole state. let alone the western portion of that "state"
  16. I dont think the article was saying that the texas football cultre was at fault for this guy snapping, just that it was a contributing factor. he was using the story to support his point that we take football more seriously than anyone else.
  17. I have watched a million times as well, but they never seem to explain why we are not named the armadillo's.
  18. I dont belive that we dont have an alumni that owns a masonary company that would like his name on a stadium. bricking in this stadium shouldnt cost the school anything. I am sure that someone will donate the materials and their time to get this done. someone who owns one of these went to UNT, and anyone with a D or higher volume rating should have the money to donate a brick or stone veneer and all the labor to this stadium without batting an eyelash. http://www.masonryshowcase.com/directoryof...p?stateQuery=tx
  19. AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas softball team’s pitching staff held the Mean Green to just two hits while the offense drove in 14 runs as the second-ranked Longhorns swept North Texas, 5-0 and 9-1 (5 inn.), at McCombs Field on Tuesday night. The top four hitters in UT’s order went a combined 11-for-23 and drove in 10 runs, while Cat Osterman threw a no-hitter in the first game, and Meagan Denny followed with a two-hitter in the night cap. Texas (26-1) pushed its nation’s-best winning streak to 24 games, while North Texas (9-10) snapped its two-game winning streak. UT won all four meetings between the two schools in the series history. Shannon Thomas went a team-best 4-for-7 and drove in three, collecting two doubles and one triple on the night. She now has six triples on the season, matching the UT school record also held by Jodi Reeves and Nicki Cockrell. Thomas also leads the Big 12 Conference in triples. Desiree Williams went 3-for-7 with four RBI, adding a double and her ninth home run of the year in the first game. Her season total stands at nine, one shy of the single-season record, also shared by Reeves and Cockrell. Williams also pushed her hitting streak to 14 games with hits in both contests. Megan Willis added a 3-for-5 performance, driving in one run in each game, while Tina Boutelle went 1-for-4, but scored three runs while drawing three walks. Held hitless in the second game, Boutelle saw her hitting streak halted at 10 games. Osterman, who threw 16 strikeouts in the first game, recorded her fourth no-hitter of the season and 19th of her career. She struck out the Mean Green lineup the first time through the order. Denny won her 10th decision in a row, earning the victory in the run-rule shortened nightcap, allowing one run with six strikeouts and one walk. Kelei Walker and Danielle Rupp recorded North Texas’ only hits on the night, while Katya Muller collected an RBI on a groundout in the nightcap. The Longhorns return to action on Thursday night when they travel down I-35 to Texas State, where they are slated to play a single game at Bobcat Field, beginning at 6 p.m. Game 1: No. 2 Texas 5, North Texas 0 UT posted all five runs in the third inning, batting around the order. Crystal Saenz had a lead-off double and MicKayla Padilla added a single up the middle. Boutelle snaked a single through the right side, scoring Saenz for the 1-0 lead. Thomas followed with a double – the first of her career – that plated Padilla and Boutelle. Williams cleared the bases with her two-run homer, her ninth of the season, pushing the score to 5-0. Osterman ran her record to 15-0 with her 19th career no-hitter and the fourth of the season. She collected 16 strikeouts, while hitting two batters. UNT’s Kristina Fowler (7-4) took the loss, allowing five runs – all earned – on seven hits while striking out three and walking two. Game 2: No. 2 Texas 9, North Texas 1 (5 inn.) After a scoreless first inning, UT put single runs up in the second and third innings to go ahead 2-0. Jaclyn Daniels had an RBI single that plated Chez Sievers in the second, and Willis’ RBI single up the middle scored Thomas, who led off the third inning with a triple. UT jumped on Mean Green starter Jessica Smith for three runs in the fourth, pushing the lead to 5-0. Daniels, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and Boutelle had back-to-back walks to open the frame. Thomas’ double cleared the bases, scoring Daniels and allowing Boutelle to come home on a throwing error by North Texas. Two batters later, Willis singled in Thomas for the 5-0 advantage. After the Mean Green pushed a run across in the top of the fifth, the Longhorns scored four in the fifth, sending Smith from the game, and earning the run-rule victory. Daniels had a one-out single, and Boutelle drew her second walk in as many innings to put runners at first and second. Thomas loaded the bases when she reached on an infield fielding error. Williams stepped up and sent a single to center field, scoring Daniels and Boutelle, and after a Willis walk loaded the bases, Rachael Cook ended the game with a two-RBI single to right center that scored Thomas and Williams. Denny (11-1) won her 10th straight decision, allowing one run on two hits while striking out six and walking one. Smith (2-6) took the loss, surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings while striking out two and walking seven. Anne Morton entered in the fifth, and faced Cook, who ended the game.
