Iowa state defense has been the best D in big 12 last half decade.. and they haven’t been over ran with 5 star guys. that found guys that fit the system. I’m going to trust them till I’m proven wrong. I don’t think it will be a one year turn around. But using the same tactics they used in building Iowa state defense Kratch and Caponi will get this thing rolling

Jon Heacock is not out DC though.

I get the excitement of newness, & I know your role has kinda morphed over the last year or so to a more diplomatic-type, but please understand the concerns are very valid.

When one of the top LBs to wear Green just graduated (the guy that basically kept the defense somewhat respectable almost single-handedly), and you lose your 2nd best LB to the portal, I think it’s completely acceptable to expect some growing pains under a 1st-year DC.

maybe? I mean, I think Edwards is better than Stone, but...and I can never seem to reiterate this enough...you don't always start your five best players. not sure why that seems so hard to grasp for some.

    You need to get realDR+PHIL+LOGO.png

There's a reason Tylor Perry could only muster 6MOTY in 21-22 pal.   It's because JJ is, and forever will be, the GOAT.

I'm saying elite guards at that level can create off the dribble if they want to be a serious team. TP couldn't really do that in CUSA, he sure as shit won't be able to do that in the big12.

And, yes, Kai was a Godsend to TP. It allowed TP to play off the ball with frequency.

I guess the pudding is in the oven now.  We’ll know in about 6 months if TP is able to play at the Big12 level.

I don't follow kstate basketball, but if they don't have a primary ball handler that can d&k to Perry I'm afraid kstate might end up very disappointed in what they stole from UNT.

Did NT have a primary ball handler that would d&k to Perry?
I mean, Kai may have done that a few times, but TP was our primary ball handler when he was on the floor.

And now that Nowell has declared for the draft, I anticipate Perry will step right in that very same role.

Or, are you saying his ball handling is not up to Big12 par?  (Pretty sure OKSt. would vehemently disagree).

it could be a luxury, but I don't really think we "need" any more size than what is already on the roster.

looking across our AAC foes and really the entire college basketball landscape, save for maybe the absolute elite programs most everyone is running out at least 3 if not 4 guards around a "center" who really is more of a classic power forward.

my assumption on the starting line-up, at least early on, next season:

    1. Rubin Jones - 6'5" 190
    2. John Buggs III - 6'3" 185
    3. Matt Stone - 6'4" 205
    4. Aaron Scott - 6'7" 200 (that feels small...he at least plays bigger)
    5. Moulaye Sissoko - 6'9" 240

that's plenty of size across the whole floor, especially the way they team defend and team rebound. I anticipate we'll still use a pretty tight 8 man rotation...Allen the Ole Miss transfer is 6'8" 230 and will likely be the primary 4/5 back-up...if Morgan gets his line up to something like 2ppg, 2rpg in 20 appearances, I'll call it a win...Edwards I'm assuming will be the primary bench scorer with Moore growing into a contributing role throughout the season. no clue on Cotton.

with all that in place, my priority with the open spots would be an upgrade to Stone at the 3...an experienced tough 6'5"-ish guard who rebounds and shoots 35%+ from 3 and can play some PF in a small line-up. maybe then a wirey 6'7"-ish high school kid...raw with some upside...I think we're looking for one more immediate contributor and an upside project with the final scholarships

There are a lot of folks who can't adapt to how the game has changed over the years.  These are old dudes who grew up watching Shaq and/or Kareem dominate down low.

It's all about shooting and perimeter defense (especially with Hodge running the show) now.   There is so much speed & athleticism in today's game that when a big gets the ball down low, they're peppered by collapsing help defenders coming in from all kinds of different angles around the perimeter simply looking to poke the ball away for a turnover.  That is, if they can even get the ball fed to them in a place to work with how good/quick our perimeter hands are.

    The game has changed.

Great pickup by soccer! Apparently it came down to staying at OU under the new coach, LSU and North Texas! And yes her brother is a 5 star recruit with over 40 offers! Hope we get the brother as well!

Coach is lining up some very lethal forwards!!   Adding Wesco to Burnell, Brown, Flannery, and Sheely...  yikes!  I feel bad for opposing defenses having to keep up with them.
    Welcome home Bailey!

A backup who signed with ASU last season when they were losing all 4 starters in the secondary and still didn't crack the two deep. What about the WR who averaged ~50 yards receiving per game at an FCS school we got last week? Aren't yall fired up?

I won't be as pessimistic as I was at the end of the Littrell era but I reserve the right to be critical about the fact that other than a handful of recruits so far, it's more of the same from the Littrell era, we are hoping their evaluations are correct and they're better at finding diamonds in the rough than other staffs..

My concern is the same as it was with all of our other coaches (which was why I wanted Fuente because he's done it at our level😞 I fear they're under-estimating the level of football we (as well as our opposition) play.   These coaches are thinking they can succeed at the G5 level with P5 leftovers & FCS level guys...  it's just proven over & over to be untrue here.  And for every successful story like Mazin Richards and Riley Mayfield who can step up to play at our level from FCS or below, there are 20 Devonte McCrae's & Amani Gilmore's that we get from P5 schools who severely underperform.

Honestly feel better about Caponi in this one. Jake Spavital is their OC and is a Air Raid/Kevin Sumlin disciple. There isn't gonna be one thing they run that Caponi hasn't seen/prepared for in his time at Iowa St.

It wont take long for Bloesch to have his fingerprints all over their offense, and for Wilcox to see how smart he is & can Spavital.
He knows a lot of the defensive personnel here (re: player strengths & weaknesses).
This could be a VERY SLOPPY game as it's going to be 2 teams with new systems they're breaking in for the first time at game speed against an opponent. Both will be trying to figure out what they can & can't do well, with the exception being Cal's defense.

So definitely not a "hard commitment" if he is still out looking. I see nothing on his Twitter about UNT until you scroll way down. This is part of the early commitment process that sucks, especially if they don't pin/post on UNT.

This does not mean "he is still out looking".
Picture him minding his own business in 3rd period English, and gets a call to his coaches' office to meet Memphis' OL coach.  They chat ball a while, and maybe watch some of his film.  They offer him a scholarship (knowing full-well he's already committed to us)...  He's not supposed to go talk to them (because he's already committed to us), or be proud of their offer based on his hard work?

Perry was one of the best ever, however I would go with Joe Hamilton or Kenneth Lyons as the best ever.

Hamilton did everything Perry did without the luxury of the 3 pointer.   He was IMO a much better point guard at distributing the ball and was a much quicker player than Perry.  Both Perry and Hamilton were great outside shooters, but Hamilton was much better scoring on drives to the basket.  Hamilton also played in the old MVC which was a much better league than current CUSA.

Lyons played four years and at 6'7 was as tough as it gets.

Both Hamilton and Lyons statistically benefited from playing in a run and shoot offense compared to McCasland's slow pace.

I am sure these players were way before your time, however be careful when you state someone is the greatest of all time without at least attempting to see what the competition for that title would be.

Obviously, there were NT players that very well could be better than any I ever witnessed such as John Savage, Jim Mudd, etc.

Lyons is before my time, but his #’s speak for themselves.  He’s a legend.

OK so I get the love for Tylor and quite frankly he' s the best we ever had in the history of the program and all of you all know this and if you don't you should step aside.

More importantly, what does your girlfriend think?  She probably says Tony Mitchell.

I have nothing but respect for Javion, but I could throw out names like Joe Hamilton, Kenneth Lyons, Chris Davis, and Melvin Davis.  Couple of others that I could throw in there would be names like Jesse Ratliff, Tony Worrell, John Savage and Josh White.  It is difficult to compare eras, etc., and I really don't want to discredit Hamlet in any way, but I think there would be quite a bit of discussion prior to anointing him greatest player of all time.

If anyone has followed NT basketball closely during the 21st Century, they would say Chris Davis was/is the best player to wear Green for us, and it's not really all that much of a debate.  Leaving Davis out of a "top 5" list means you aren't paying attention, or haven't been around very long.    As for Hamlet VS Perry... it's a close one, but I'll tip slightly to Javion, just for that sweet, sweet floater in the lane he could always hit if he needed to.

Littrell did his program no favors by not hiring a true QB coach after Harrell left, to evaluate and mentor the most important position on the team.  A team goes as it's QB goes.

He did.   He actually hired 2 directly after Harrell left (Reeder & Joseph).

Both were abject disasters, and it took an OL coach & Quinn Shanbour to finally get the most out of Aune.
