FIU could easily be thinking the same thing after seeing our game. There wasn’t much that happened in week 1 to inspire that much confidence going into this game.

No way.    FIU's expectations are not on our level.    They're simply happy to play at the FBS level.    They don't really expect to win anything except their FCS game.   And even that was a close one.

Again, this is one year at WSU and doesn't include his time as OC at TX Tech with Mahomes at QB.

There has never been a time when Kliff Kingsbury did not call his own plays when he was a HC.   Morris was not some hotshot OC under Kingsbury.

Morris' only relevant experience is at UIW & WAZZU.    People are just pointing out that his time calling plays at WAZZU was not very exciting.

If things are going to just eventually plateau into mediocrity for X amount years just to go through another firing/hiring and be at square 1, I'd rather just be awful out the gate to get it over with asap. Maybe hit em with a dielectricion of duty and wiggle out of the contract? I don't know. Let's just go beat FIU and LaTech and see where we sit.

Nothing is certain until it happens but I believe that Eric Morris will right the ship.  He faced a team that turned out to be better than predicted.

    ...

How can you say this with any certainty?   What if NT is worse than predicted?

You know, we'd be pretty good as long as we play teams that are significantly worse than us.

FIU is no P5-level team, or even a mediocre P5 team such as Cal.  Scheduling Cal as the opening game was a bad mistake. It was close to one of those mismatched 'body bag' games that used to be UNT's annual, fund-raising' practice. That game was even a bigger mismatch given that UNT is in a major rebuilding phase, both team and coaching staff.

UNT's 4 Horsemen of the Green Apocalypse (Ragsdale, Johnson, Adeyi and Adaway) should have a good night and run roughshod over a weak FIU D-line.   38-24 UNT.

I bet the Wyoming and TXSt fans are saying the same things after they played similar teams.  🙄

The idea that having Cal at home would be anything remotely similar to playing a National Title contender on the road is completely laughable.    Cal is not that kind of team.

And no, we're not in a "major rebuilding phase".   We return a majority of starters from last year.

Disagree that Cal is an average AAC team. I think they'll end up being better than everyone except Tulane and SMU.

Still no excuse for the embarrassing performance we displayed.

I feel pretty confident that, in addition to those two, UTSA, Memphis, & ECU would beat them.

Really??? You don’t think I am being fair?

Seth was given time to grow into the position. Too much time. He learned too late unfortunately that the “Tee it High and Let it Fly.” Wasn’t going to work without a generational QB. He eventually learned to “Run The Damn Ball!”

He also learned that the 3-3-5 defensive wasn’t going work without the right personnel. Switched to the 4 down lineman. Too late to make a difference. He was fired.

Morris shouldn’t be given time to figure out the head coaching job! We need a coach that understands the importance of the job and all of the responsibilities.

We do not have time for him to “grow” into the role!!!

    I'm confused here.

Seth took a 1-win team to a 5-win, backdoor'd-bowl-game, team in year 1.  The following year, we were playing in a conference championship game.  The next season was the 2nd of back-to-back 9-win seasons.

Seth Littrell created his own standards with his IMMEDIATE success.   When he couldn't keep it going, the expectations created from his previous success cannibalized him.

Now, does Morris get to "restart" the success clock and drag the team down to a 3 or 4 win season?   Or do we expect him to get back to 6-6, at minimum, where Littrell left it?

For me, the standards Littrell created, that ultimately led to his termination, all pertain to Morris... immediately.
We lost a ton of good players to the portal/graduation.  And although this doesn't mean crap do a guy like GJ Kinne, I'll allow a step backward to 4 or 5 wins this year before I expect a 9-win season next year under Morris... like Littrell did.

Next week will be enough .. If we get our asses handed to us again ????

If we lose to FIU, yeah.   I don't care that it's "on the road".   We beat FIU last year 52-14 under Littrell.   If we lose to FIU this year...  we have Benford (or Trilli, or Dodge) comparisons to make.   FIU Sucks.  No excuses.

  8. Wow!   This is a really long thread.   I admittedly didn't read much of it, but I hope this point has been made:

The fact that there were several ACC schools that had to have their arms twisted in order to make this happen, and the fact that the 3 schools the ACC added are pretty terrible (outside of Stanford), in the grand scheme...

Should tell you all you need to know about the other ACC teams' intentions of hanging around long term, and the future of the ACC.    What that means for schools like Wake, Syracuse, Louisville, BC, SMU, Stanford, & Cal, remains to be seen.

I know you SMU fans are smart enough to see this is temporary.   And yes, of course, if NT were in your position we'd do it too.

Of course, I was wrong about the Big 12's predicted implosion after the departure of TX & OU, so who the heck knows?

The contract Dion signed at Colorado was for $29.5 million for 5 years.  There is no way we could have even gotten close.  Then after hiring him, his assistant coaches didn’t follow for nothing.

Of course this past offseason wasn't going to work.

But in December of 2021, when everyone & their dog knew Littrell wasn't going to pan out... maybe.

Instead, we got another year of Littrell for no reason, and Morris, instead.

  10. Classic GMG.com coping mechanism.

We get smashed, and then take out frustrations on SMU’s attendance.

I have to admit, there's something endearing about the commitment to attendance snack from a school at that average lower attendance than SMU despite having an undergrad population big enough to fill the stadium by itself.

It's more like a UNT tradition than actual snack talk

While I think you’re on to something, I’m more interested in the snack talk.  I like fresh fruits & salty crackers/chips for my snacks between meals.

This is why I think it'll work fine for conference play.  It's not suited to deal with a larger team with a strong run game.  That said, the game plan for cal was pretty bad.  I just hope they actually learned something and are capable of adjusting

I have really bad news for you.

This is not 2001-04 when we play a ranked Big12/SEC team in our 1st game, then get to kick the crud out of the SBC.

That Cal team was maybe a middle-of-the-pack AAC team.

  12. We’ve been VERY SPOILED at K & P for a long time.   I can only think of 1 short point in my entire time following the Mean Green where we did knott have a good K.

And yeah, I dunno who the Ausie punter is, but I was expecting a lot better of him yesterday.

The defense was bad all around yesterday. There’s no arguing that, and I also question if the scheme is right for North Texas…

But to be fair, our offense didn’t do them any favors because our offense didn’t get any first downs in the last 40 MINUTES of the game.

In other words, for 2/3rds of the game, our offense was on and off the field in mere minutes, giving our defense no time to recover and make adjustments with in-game feedback.

Effectively, our offense allowed Cal’s offense to wear our defense down in the Texas heat the way we all hoped our offense was going to wear Cal’s defense down in the Texas heat.

We have to improve all around this week.

That Ott guy had like 150yds by the end of the 1st half.  We were going toe-to-toe with them offensively in the 1st half.

While I agree 1 1st down in the 2nd half made it even worse, the defense is certainly a problem.

The timing of this sounds like he’s saying that anyone complaining about yesterday’s performance is not “people that want to see you succeed.”

Reality check:  Most of us have “The University of North Texas”, or “North Texas State University” written on our diplomas, & only wish for “his” success because he’s employed by our Alma Mater.
Ultimately, we could give 2 💩💩 about his success.  We want The University of North Texas to succeed!

If he’s only surrounding himself with people who are saying positive things & making excuses today, then we should expect more of the same.

    Very disappointing tweet from him.

  15. Relax y’all.  We’ve all heard from experts that our defense is going to be exactly like (re: just as effective as) Iowa St.!

Also, for those saying our defensive line is too small, you’re wrong about that.  We have plenty of size there.  Heck, we have SO MUCH size there, that we can have a 301lb-Enoch Jackson chilling on the bench.

I like Wesloski, and think he can turn into a heckuva player, but we’re extremely weak at the LB position right now.

Where the heck was Mazin?  We’re going to need way more from him.
