  1. NT 80- I do not think that tough teams want to schedule UNT JUST because we are a new program... I know ALL the coaches in the Big XIV and I consider myself to be their peers. Ive worked camps, clinics, and have attended conventions with them. I do think that some coaches may consider UNT to be a less challenging game in our first season, but I also know that NO ONE expects us to roll over and play dead. I also think that Universities want change and enjoy playing someone different on a yearly basis. When you play a 56-65 game schedule as season, you tend to compete against many of the same teams more than once... I think in 2005 when out stadium is complete, some of our away opponents will return the favor.. It's very difficult to get a team that on a daily basis plays in a stadium with locker rooms, etc.... that seats 4,000-6,000 to come to Denton to play in a park. In 2004, we will play at Denia Park off of I-35 and Fort Worth Drive. I have all faith to believe that our stadium will be complete by the 2005 season. GO MEAN GREEN! ss
  2. I think that our schedule is TOUGH, but not the most difficult in the country.... Try playing in the PAC-10 or BIG XIV on a daily basis... "TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST!!!!" ss
  3. Yes- we will be hosting a 7 team tournament in Feb. and another tournament in March that will be a 4 team tournament... The first tournament will include and be highlighted by: Oklahoma State University Creighton University Wichita State University Southwest Missouri State UTA University of New Mexico...... 2nd tournament will be in March Harvard University University of Northern Colorado TBA
  4. North Texas Announces 2004 Softball Schedule DENTON, Texas— North Texas has announced its 2004 softball schedule, marking the return of a Mean Green program that was disbanded in 1988. The initial schedule of the new era features matchups with nine teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association rankings. The Mean Green will begin the 2004 season at Texas A&M on Feb. 4. The game will mark a return for North Texas head coach Stacey Segal who played for the Aggies from 1990-93. The game will also be the first of five matchups against Big 12 opponents during the season. Following the season opener, North Texas will play in a six-team tournament hosted by Baylor from Feb. 6-8. North Texas will host Northwood University in its home opener on Feb. 10, which will be followed by a game at Texas on Feb. 11. The Longhorns are currently ranked No. 5 in the latest USA Today poll. Next on the schedule for North Texas is a six-team tournament at Texas-San Antonio, followed by a single game at Oklahoma, which is ranked No. 4 in the latest USA Today poll. The Mean Green will host the Betlin Round-Up from Feb. 20-22, featuring seven teams, including current nationally-ranked Oklahoma State. A single home game against Centenary College comes before the Frost Cutlery Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. Feb. 27-29. Nationally-ranked Alabama will highlight the Frost Cutlery Classic field. The Mean Green takes the road for tournaments in Arizona and California during the first two weeks of March, facing many of the nations top teams, including perennial powers Arizona and UCLA. The Hillenbrand Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. will feature a matchup with Arizona, which ranks third in the latest USA Today poll. The Headrick’s Hallowell Chevrolet Classic at Fresno, Calif. will feature three teams currently ranked, including nine-time national champion UCLA. Beginning March 20, North Texas will be home for two weeks, hosting games against Northwestern State (Okla.), Texas-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin and the Wells Fargo Classic. North Texas begins Sun Belt play at Florida International April 10. The Mean Green will also play at Louisiana-Lafayette and Middle Tennessee before playing its conference home-opener against New Mexico State May 1. Western Kentucky will also travel to Denton in the final regular-season series for North Texas May 8-9. The Sun Belt Conference Championship will be held in Lafayette, La. May 14-16. Throughout the season, the Mean Green will face teams that have combined to win 19 of the 21 NCAA championships of all time. Segal recently completed her first recruiting class, made up of five junior college transfers and eight high school seniors.
  5. Yes- I already knew that. CCCC has a good program with some good local talent.... Thank you. ss
  6. UNTLifer- No, I am not related to Steven? However, I do like his movies. Have you viewed the softball website on the Mean Green website? There is a complete list of our current November signees, with their positions, strengths, current team, and accomplishments. As for the diamond? I am confident than many of our young ladies will immediately contribute to the success of our program. I am excited about the experience the junior college class that will bring to our squad. They are proven champions with World Series experience. The know what it feels like to be in the heat of a conference race, as well as handle the pressures and expectations of being ranked in the Top 10. A few of them have even had a LONG taste of #1. Our incoming freshman ALL know how to win. They play on extremely competitive summer squads that have been to Regionals and Nationals. Some have won State Championships, and have made All-State. I believe to win you have to recruit WINNERS! They know how and they will not settle for anything less. April 16, 2004 will be the second NCAA signing date. IT WILL BE A MEMORABLE ONE FOR US! Stay tuned. GO MEAN GREEN! Coach Segal
  7. Future MEAN GREEN softball player MAUREEN KELLEY, a incoming freshman from OKC, OK and Bishop McGuiness High School has been invited to try-out for the IRELAND OLYMPIC SOFTBALL TEAM. CONGRATULATIONS MO!
  8. Eagle-96 I appreciate the question. I have absolutely no idea how the other coaches feel about GMG.com. I was unaware of the access to it until one of our academic advisors told me about it. I have given this GMG.com http: address to many of my recruits. I think it gives them the opportunity to view articles, and read about what's going on at North Texas on a daily basis. I enjoy the questions and want to share information about the softball program with whomever WANTS to know. I would like to have more questions to answer. p.s. WE WILL BE REFERRED TO AS MEAN GREEN SOFTBALL! GO MEAN GREEN! ss
  9. Hello CAV- Thank you for the input. There will be MANY renovations to the field(s) that we will be competing on. As for the field drainage. It's a SunBelt conference rule to have a tarp, and I do not believe in rain-outs. There's nothing like a couple of bags of diamond dry! :)Look forward to seeing you at the field. Better get used to seeing a scoreboard.... ESPECIALLY WHEN NORTH TEXAS WILL BE AHEAD!! GO MEAN GREEN! ss
  10. CAV- YES!!!! THE UNT BOOKSTORE HAS MEAN GREEN SOFTBALL T-SHIRTS NOW!! They were in the t-shirt bins with the other sport t's... As for hats, I have not yet decided on a certain design for the softball hats... Our team will wear visors. I will have some hats made for parents, friends, and fans to purchase. I am aware that the state tourney will be held at Denia Park. That also now looks to be the site where the MEAN GREEN will be playing next season!!! Thank you for your support..... Coach Segal
  11. Lady Eagles 53 vs Western Kentucky 65
  12. I just wanted to get an idea of how many individuals have never seen a college fastpitch softball game? GET READY!!
  13. "Go ahead and get exited about your softball North Texas." GREAT QUOTE!
  14. WOW! I'm impressed. Someone has been doing some research. YES- I'm extremely excited about the ENTIRE inaugural class. I have not yet EVEN BEGUN to talk about the entire class, because I was waiting for ALL OF THEIR "ALL-STATE" ACCOLADES TO COME IN AFTER THEIR HS SEASON... I can tell you that 3 of my freshman from OK made ALL-STATE this past fall. Crosby Dyke, Susan Waters, and Maureen Kelley. The other freshman's team had some nominating problems, so none of her high school teammates, including herself, were eligible for awards. If they would have been, Heather Bostic would have been added to that ALL-STATE list as well.... As for my transfers, who are currently in season... They are easy to follow since their stats are posted on variously websites.. (http://www.njcaa.org, http://www.alvin.cc.tx.us/regionxiv) I'm just doing my job of trying to keep everyone informed of what's happening. I do not mind Coach Stacey ( BUT WOULD PREFER IF IT'S SPELLED RIGHT ) Funny story about that (actually, NOT FUNNY AT ALL).... Last year at the Women's College World Series, a coach who's team was participating spelled her player's name wrong on the line-up card and there were consequences..... I'VE LEARNED A LESSON TO ALWAYS SPELL NAMES RIGHT! I foresee us being competitive this first season, or I would not have brought JUCOs on board. I would have recruited 18 freshman to coach for 4 seasons.... Our schedule will be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, but as I've said before, " YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST, TO BE THE BEST!" GO MEAN GREEN!
  15. Future softball player, Brittiny Chapman, shortstop from Eloy, AZ is currently ranked 3rd in the nation in runs batted in (RBI's). CAC teammate and FUTURE MEAN GREEN TEAMMATE, Ana Vega, 3B from Tuscon, AZ is 7th in the nation. Chapman, Vega, and her Central Arizona College teammates are 32-1 and ranked #1 in the nation in the NJCAA.
  16. I will even be more excited after our April 16th signing date.... GO MEAN GREEN
  17. Yes- we are having two camps this summer... June 8-11 All Skills Camp Ages 8-17 June 12-14 Pitcher/Catcher Camp Ages 8-17 CONTACT ASST. COACH ANGIE SCHARNHORST FOR FUTURE DETAILS AT scharnhorst@unt.edu Our camp brochere should be completed soon and will be available online.. GO MEAN GREEN!
  18. The SunBelt conference in VERY strong in softball sending ULL to the Women's College World Series twice in the last 10 years..... The BIG XII is the second strongest conference in the nation behind the PAC 10.. At the present time, Texas, A&M, Baylor, OU, and OSU are ranked in the Top 25..... ULL received votes Should be challenging, but MY TEAM WILL BE UP FOR IT!!!
  19. There is not much difference at all in JC players versus D. I players... Especially juniors vs freshman... If the JC player is from a good tradition riched program, there should be no difference.... On the other hand.... there is a difference in pitching prospects... Top of the level D. I pitchers can throw up to 68-69 mph from 43 feet. ( NOT VERY MANY OF THEM) Most D. I pitchers throw anywhere from 57-66mph.... there is more emphasis on movement than velocity.... Mandy should be able to come into our program and COMPETE immediately!! She's BIG STRONG LEFTY (6 foot) who has a great drop ball and has been clocked at 64 mph. GROUND BALLS win balls games......
  20. I THINK ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE WHEN YOU GET TO POST-SEASON! Everyone is 0-0 and the tournament will go to who ever decides to show-up and get hot!! THE FIRST ROUND IS HUGE and we got a good draw! GO MEAN GREEN!
  21. "TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST!" -s.segal there is no other way to do it!!!
  22. The final touches are being put on the 2004 spring MEAN GREEN softball schedule. At the present time, the Mean Green will face off against many of the nations TOP 25! Stay tuned for more details!
  23. Future NT softball player Mandy Hacker continued her undefeated quest as she went 2-0 for the week. Mandy's win total has now made 8-0 on the season with 36K's and a 0.75 earned run average. Hacker and her Blinn College teammates are currently 13-3 atop the NJCAA Region XIV South Zone Standings. GO MEAN GREEN!
  24. Future North Texas Softball Recruit Mandy Hacker continues to shine as she currently leads to NJCAA Region XIV in wins. Mandy currently has 6 wins to 0 losses as she has pitched 40.33 innings, has 20K's, and an impressive 0.52 ERA. Opponents are currently batting a low .178 against her. GO MEAN GREEN!
