The decision should be based on  whether it is more important to play them one game and lose a possible year of eligibility or have 4 more years of play left.

I would absolutely not use a player in this situation.

Winning the game does not substantially change the season.  Nor, is one defensive player likely to change the outcome of the game.

The theory that remaining eligibility is not a driving factor in utilizing players because there is a high likelihood you are going to lose them anyway is a losing philosophy.

Not intending to speak for @Monkeypox but I thought he was talking in general terms and not just about this game.  At this point, I agree with you that I wouldn’t play someone against UAB if it causes him to lose his redshirt.  Earlier in the season I would play whoever gives us the best chance to win disregarding redshirt status.  That’s a paradigm shift for me because of the portal and it’s possibly a negative unforeseen consequence of the portal as players potentially miss out on a redshirt season.

As explosive as the offense has been, they’ve come up short at times when the defense made the occasional stop.

No better example of this than the start of the 2nd half against SMU.  Defense forces a punt to end SMU’s opening possession and we fumble a few plays later to give SMU the ball inside the 20.  That was a back and forth game up until that point, but SMU took advantage and it was down hill from there.

Of course, I notice multiple plays where we miss two, three, and at least once four tackles. I don't care WHAT defense you are running, you can't stop an offense if you can't tackle!

I understand offense much better than defense, but I haven’t noticed a lot this year when I feel like Caponi has called a bad defense for the given situation.  One glaring exception was when we appeared to be playing man coverage at the end of the game against Memphis.  I think a lot of people calling for Caponi’s head probably don’t know defense any better than I do, but they see it’s not working so they automatically blame the coach.  I’d love for someone who really understands defense to give some examples of Caponi making bad play calls that are a detriment to the team.  Because he runs a 3-3-5 is not an example.  We knew when we hired him that’s what he’d run.

Should not have lost to FIU, Navy, Memphis, Tulane and maybe even utsa.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but I think any team in this conference would have trouble beating Tulane, Memphis, UTSA, and SMU in consecutive weeks.

At James Madison. So am I correct that James Madison was playing 1-AA football 2 years ago and now as a Sun Belt team is hosting College Game Day?

What does that say about our historic football program?

It says the same about us as it does about pretty much every other G5 and many P5’s.

To be fair, their schedule is absolutely brutal (they play a ranked team like every week), and besides Oregon I believe they've been in every game down to the wire

Yes, every game has gone down to wire including TCU, Colorado St., Stanford, Arizona St., Nebraska.  Bottom line is they’re 4-6 playing in a conference of their peers and Prime is the model of what a coach should be.  We’re 3-7 in a conference of our peers and people are calling for Morris’s job.

    - Jeff Trailor will be named head coach of Baylor football  aTm would do well to hire him, but they won’t.  They’ll outsmart themselves in Aggie fashion.

    - SMUt will defeat Tulane in AAC champ game and will get the G5 playoff spot  UTSA over SMU

    - UNT will lose their last two games but it will be close I’m think we get two wins to close the season.  We may score 80 against UAB, of course they could score 80 against us too so…

    - Eric Morris will ultimately decide to retain Caponi primarily due to the fact he has a 2 year contract  Agree

    - UNT basketball will win a thriller today against St John’s Agree

    FIFY

I almost stated it that way originally.  The only reason I didn’t is because I was wanting to make the point that regardless of winning or losing those games, we’re the same team, only people’s perception would change.  My point being, even if we’d have won those two games, we still wouldn’t be very good.

Even though we had the most difficult conference schedule, still a frustrating season because our first six games were the most winnable half of a season in the 10 seasons I've followed. I feel like 5-1 should not have been an unrealistic dream. With even Bennett's defense from last season and Rogers starting all season we could have at least gone 7-5, and that's taking into consideration an 0-4 record during our death stretch.

The FIU and Navy losses are the ones that define the season.  Win those two games and we’re considered a decent team.  But we lost them so we’re considered a bad team.
