  1. UNT90 - we will have to agree to disagree...again...too bad. I really felt we connected on the "bad beard" thread...plus my sister had a Chevette! ha

*remember every year corporations spend millions & millions trying to design better products, better logos with better fonts, better slogans with better copy & better packaging to influence the end consumer to buy into what they are selling. It's Marketing 101.

What makes a school or it's football team any different? North Texas is selling a product.

  2. This whole Duck Commander style trend has gotten WAY outta control.

agreed...so tired of the food catching beards...not a germ-a-fob...but IMO they're pretty gross and hot...crap we live in Texas!

remember Denton looks to Austin for weird trends...so not that original...

  3. I really enjoyed Baylor getting their ass handed to them...they thought all they had to do was show up and take the win at the Fiesta Bowl.

UCF came to win....just like Boise State took it from Oklahoma. Baylor had a spoiled brat attitude about the bowl match-up. That's the beauty about college football. Underdogs can win...how bad do you want it?

I'm personally ready for North Texas to upset a P5 again....it's TIME!

  4. I was at the OU/TX game in 2008. "Break Em Off" was played at some point durning the pregame warm ups...the OU players & fans were really loving it. This is one of best pregame "Hype" songs I've heard....sports chills.

    thanks for posting...

  5. I have also heard someone muse "How does the popular definition of insanity" jibe with another popular saying in our culture "If at first you don't succeed....try, try, again".

    agreed...

In today's Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Texas football coach Charlie Strong's 1st stop in their Texas tour is....Fort Worth.

"....what does Texas know about football, recruiting fans & talent? (they at least know to go where the people are)

I have been to 2 of the last 3 FW caravans....enjoyed them both.

  6. If I owned the Mean Green store and could carry anything with any logo...my wish list would be any & all from my last 4 boards with "our" NT.
My top-priority NT items would be the following:
    • Car Emblem (simple & easy to read)
    • Flag (game day flags for tailgate & homes)
    • Outerwear (jackets, polos, fishing shirts)
    • Caps (simple & easy to read headgear)

My non-essential but would be cool category:

    • Boots (NT would look better than small hard to read North Texas w diving eagle...ie Texas Ranger "T" boots...we are in TX)
    • i-phone case (what would have as many exposure/impressions than a phone cover...NT would be simple & easy to read)
    • Cups & Koozies (for now I will just have to use my "green light to greatness" koozie)
    • mini-helmet with the interlocked NT on my shelf (classic & collegiate)
I think our NT looks as good as the listed NC, ND and better than BU, SC and UH.
I just returned from SEC country and could not help but notice the branded lettered logos on everything from tailgating spirit gear to business casual shirts & slacks. It's big business down there. I would like our business to grow.
Time to turn "another corner" and expand the brand...to be a little bigger we need to brand a little bigger.
    good design is good business

  7. thanks for the topic Plum....great post and insights from you, FFR and others.

we need to step up, turn "another corner" and accept the fact that a large mid-major like NT needs a wider selection. Two marks does not fit all needs and applications.

(i.e.) the spelled out North Texas in a small "scruntched-up" font with diving eagle to one side....looks bad on visor, baseball cap or car emblem.

we need better licensing agreements & a better design/marketing team

  8. So if you can't argue you just choose to insult? Any graphic designer, or hell, any person who has ever designed uniforms would describe your uniforms as busy. They don't adhere to branding either.

    Let's start, shall we?

First off, the NT logo on the helmet is not licensed by the university thus cannot be used.

Secondly, the jerseys appear to look like Pro Combat but are not.

Thirdly, the North Texas writing across the chest is not our font and cannot be used.

The numbers would be extremely hard to see from the stands and would not appear as TV friendly due to their sharp edges and lack of cut corners or at least curvature.

The Texas on the sleeves is not part of our branding--so nope, can't use those either.

The color scheme is nice, as is the color idea and the basic structure but the rest is unrealistic, ugly and too busy.

So after you take out all the nonsense in your design you're left with the black uniforms. Which were clearly INSPIRED by the best parts of your design and left out all the awful parts.

So, stripping it to the core, looks like years later, you still pimp your jerseys and don't bother with the fact that the AD pretty much used them but made them realistic.

Because personally, I like the basic organization and design of your uniforms. The home, away and alternate are fine. You simply ruined it by making a cheap Oregon knock off that would make us look like Tech via the name, the ugly Texas patch, the generic NT alumni logo and the fonts. Everything else is fine. You don't accept criticism because a few people don't worship the uniform design you made.

Not even sure you're using Kelly Green.

Also, I don't have Illustrator, so I guess my hands are tied and not making up a better uniform. Sounds like one of those "YOU CANT CRITICIZE FOOTBALL IF YOU CANT PLAY" arguments to me.

dude...these are concepts & mock ups...that apparently inspired the Athlectic Dept. this last year. So my argument to you, would be that they are "effective" concepts & mock ups.

  9. Furniture markups are huge. They have to be because it isn't every day you're going out to buy a couch or a dresser. The $7MM quoted is list price on that stuff. What Mac gave away was probably about a $500K- $1.4MM in goods. Still nothing to sneeze at but factor in that people in Houston were talking about buying furniture on a weekend when no one is talking about buying furniture coupled with the add-ons (delivery fees, set up fees, upholstery protection, etc etc) and it was great marketing on his part for next to nothing relative to the press. Dudes no dummy.

disagree...furniture margins are fairly modest...there is a cost to doing business. I would guess that huge mark ups would better describe the bottled water or grab & go coffee industry.

M-Mac's cost of goods is probably closer to $4.2M....not $500K or $1.4M

"he claims he didnt have insurance?....don't forget....he's a pretty sharp promoter....and here we are...talking about his store/brand"

  10. USC is also similar to UNT in name. USC primarily uses three distinct logos in their sports merchandising.

    • Trojan Head
    • USC
    • interlocked SC

wow...another university using multiple logos with zero "brand confusion". USC has a very balanced approach, marketing all three logos about the same...a third, a third and a third.

UNTFan23- Honest Question: Are they California Southern CS or Southern California SC?

just joking...really...I come in peace and know that you do too! I know you are a great guy and support our University better than I do. You have passion for our school & probably even go to some basketball games...ha. I have passion too...only...I get hung up in football uniforms and merchandising. I think we both just want our school to be better...let's say from really good to great!

ok...back to merchandising and more money!

it's time to turn another corner and "expand the brand!"

    Good Design is Good Business!

  11. An additional mark for athletic gear would be nice....we're leaving money on the table.
Our letterman's NT is balanced, unique & collegiate. It ties the old with the new. It's never too late to add a traditional college mark, that can stand the test of time. 100 years from now, I would bet that the OU, BU, NC & ND's of the college football world will still be using their interlocked marks.
    • shades of green come & go "green, apple green, dark green, darker forest green, mint green, kelly green"
    • logos come & go "NT, flying worms, parakeets, daffys, hand drawn eagle, clip-art eagle, sow"
    • mascots come & go " see...the evolution of Scrappy"
    • fonts evolve and change with the current design trends

...bring back the NT for our second 100 years!

  12. I can't recall seeing someone with the covered wagon on OU merch. It's out there but I doubt it's what most people buy. It's pretty obvious given the huge selection of 'OU' shirts versus the covered wagon which most people identify with given the selection of merch.

Same with UNC. I believe there is more merch. out there with the 'NC' logo than their mascot or that foot thing they sometimes use. To me the 'NC' is far more identifiable to the university than their goat or ram or whatever it is. If their mascot didn't wear a UNC hat and be powder blue I might not know which school he represents.

Notre Dame merch. generally has either 'Notre Dame' spelled out or they use their 'ND' logo. You will almost never see just the clover leaf by itself as people might just think someone is just Irish and not associated with the school. If there is a clover leaf it has something else on the merch. to signify it has to do with Notre Dame.

I like how you gave examples of schools with extremely strong brand identification that has been consistent through the years. Sadly, North Texas has changed its branding far too many times and therefore you can't go back in time and trace the progression of that branding to where we are today.

I kinda already qualified why I used North Carolina & Notre Dame as examples to follow...but will list again for UNTFan23.

    - both "Top 10" for collegiate merchandising

    - both similar in name to University of North Texas

Why not? Why not look to the biggest, the best & the brightest for inspiration? Why reinvent the wheel?

Let's talk OU....may not have a wagon everywhere....but tons of shirts will simply say "Sooners" or "Oklahoma". Seems like every North Texas hat, shirt, key chain or car emblem has our "mechanical diving eagle". If it only said "Mean Green" or "North Texas" sometimes...that would be refreshing.

ok then...let's talk Baylor...small private...12K undergrads...not in the top 75. They have done a terrific job branding. May last year, at Rally House, I was blown away by the assoment of cool Baylor gear. Kept thinking to myself "freaking Baylor has way more meaner & greener gear than our Mean Green". Please note that I did not have any "brand confusion" when I saw a "bear head" or "a bear paw" or "Baylor" or "Sic'em" or "BU".

To be bigger...we need to think bigger...brand bigger!

    (expand the brand)

I don't see a down side to adding a traditional collegiate mark to expand our brand and gain additional revenue.

  13. Ok, then it is like using the Xbox logo, still under the Microsoft name, but would cause brand confusion.

    not really...in college football

If you see a clover leaf or a fighting leprechaun or a ND does it cause brand confusion?

If you see a tar-heeled foot or a NC does it cause brand confusion?

If you see a covered wagon or OU does it cause brand confusion?

To me it would not be total chaos or confusing at all...just an additional mark & more money for our school.
