  1. Even their fans hate these.

So, is your point that we should make ugly uniforms to "attract young kids" even though when interviewed they say that they really don't care?

No...but maybe the TCU fans posting could be like many of our GMG.com posters...old, out of touch or pessimistic. The players & fans on the field during the unveil looked excited.

    I posted this because:

    • it interest me
    • TCU is another local D1 school
    • TCU is committed to winning
    • TCU is committed improving
    • TCU is not afraid of change
    • TCU has yet to don goofy "horn striped pants"
    • TCU has not had a "white facemask" in over 25 years
    • TCU will use many tools & resources to improve their football program
    • TCU athletics focus on "football" has been beneficial to their school & the local economy.

so Ryan...for you...in the most simple terms....if it's "good for football"...it's "good for the school".

I also believe that "good design is good business".

Whether it's a regular "uniform" or an "alternate uniform"....the uniform should look well designed and not "ugly".

It's "part" of the equation for many schools. (Do you think Baylor & TCU have to recruit a little different than their conference mate Texas?)

I threw this article out here for public consumption and gave my opinion...guess what...if TCU missed the mark..."which I think they may have"...they'll try something else...soon..."

TCU has had over 15+ different football helmets over their history...and you know what "nobody cares" and that's ok...their current logo is working well for them. Most G5 universities that have had a football program over 50 years have had 10+ different helmets. People worry that NT has too many helmets (13+)...get another and lose our identity...yea right...just find one that looks collegiate and stick with for a while...not a big deal...things evolve and change. Iowa State has had 15+ helmets but finally landed on a good collegiate look.

I admire TCU's ability to make a plan and execute it...to see their current status, conference or record...not be satisfied and keep pushing, market, brand, hire, recruit and schedule their way to success.

  2. yes...I mentioned when I posted this that I too am not a fan of the camouflage...its a little too much...but so are many of Oregons & Boise State's combinations...

Excluding the Alabama, Texas, USC and Penn States of the world...

the point is...love them or hate them...uniforms are a tool for "recruiting purposes"...even traditional schools like Notre Dame & Oklahoma have recently opened up to the idea...

I'm sure that the Battleship Purple camoflage unis are not intended to please you, me or their country club alumni...they were made to please the young 18 year old recruits that could possibly help TCU win more games.

TCU fans "do like" the wins.

I admire progress and trying to improve your own position...it is..."free market enterprise."

today's current climate continues to prove that uniforms are a part of the equation for college football...

I personally lean to a more traditional "sans" camoflage look...but you gotta love TCU's efforts to recruit young people and stir up interest with their fans...

  4. How is it that much different compared to the stuff you do with your uniforms?

    ummm...did you open the link?

    the 3XL uni has zero stripes...no shading...nothing angular...no camouflage...no feathers on anything...

  5. So...honest/ignorant question here: they moved this game so it will be nationally televised, right? so what if we get spanked on national tv for the first time at apogee? will it still be "good" that we got on the national spotlight, or will our poor product just have a nation-sized spotlight shined on it?

publicity is publicity...good, bad or whatever

We're talking about a football game...not covering up a crime...so yes...win or lose...I think the exposure would benifit North Texas more than it would hurt.

  6. this is what mid-majors G5's do...

heck...more and more P5's are now part of the weeknight TV games.

personally...I look at this as a positive for North Texas.

We serve as a Thursday night "fix" for all those college football junkies...lots of people watching the Mean Green that otherwise would not...

I still have fond memories of watching North Texas on tv while working in North Carolina a few years ago...

  7. There is pretty solid GMG.Com evidence that 90 went full retard a little over a year ago, and everyone knows there is a reason you never go full retard.

    ...that's funny!

"btw...I get the reference of this started as commentary about the movie (I am Sam) which then became a punch line

    for another movie (Tropic Thunder)."

    There's no doubt...that 90 has gone Full-Tard.

I keep thinking that 90 could be someone's 2nd avatar. (ie Ben Gooding's wife)...some sort of Bizzaro-Harry trying to stir up the forum with crazy talk...(heck of a commitment) but if it truly is one dude & his thoughts...it's a little sad.

When I see his post so many things come to mind...angry...homophob...jorts...troll...Coach90....Queen90...

and now adding "Simple Jack" & Tard90.

  8. Just goes to show how insecure they are, with good reason.

    Pot...meet Kettle

90 seriously "What's wrong with you?"

Why do you always sound like an angry alcoholic?

Were you the kid that never got invited to anything...and if you did...you were never invited back? Why?...because you didn't know how to act right.

Your Stupid Troll BS has worn thin...and doesn't benifit our school.

You know who talks that much TRASH? answer "trashy people"

Maybe you should take a knee for 6-12 months...

  9. I know I'm late to the party here, but I'm baffled how some of you are so dismissive of UTSA. Not only have they beaten us every time we've played, but we even had a 100 year head start. I welcome another big state school as a rival.

    this...

it's embarrissing to have NT people put down UTSA....we look scared, jealous & foolish. Who cares if they've had football for 5 years? Their 5 year old program beat our 100+ years of football twice. Good for them...they're committed to working the D1 football puzzle while we stare blankly at it. We want better teams like UTSA in C-USA.

It's a joke...kinda like critizing someone driving a KIA when you drive a Hyundai

...both good cars...but neither is a Cadillac.

  10. Go youtube unveiled uniform reactions then come on here and tell me players don't care. Recruits might not make that an emphasis in an interview in fear of looking matrailistic, too soft, etc. but make no mistake players care and they care a lot. There is video after video of entire teams going crazy during uniform unveiling...example...

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AcjJmn6PpxU

There are only about a million of these on youtube. Again, it's beyond irrelevant what a 17 year old senior in high school thinks while trying to make the perfect impression in an interview.

    Uniforms matter...they just do.

agree with Ben Gooding...as much as some on here may want to stick their head in the sand and say that uniforms are not a small factor in recruiting...they're wrong.

The proof is in the P5 college numbers.

When traditional powerhouse colleges like Michigan, Notre Dame & Oklahoma have an "alternate" uniform...admittedly for recruiting...then it's a factor.

Out the 65 P5 colleges...all but 4...Alabama, Southern California, Penn State & Texas have had an alternate uniform.(*in the 2014 season...USC had chrome facemask for some games & Texas had a metallic longhorn the last 4 or 5 games of 2014).

Plus part of these traditional schools draw "is" their "traditional" uniforms. What kid would not be excited to put on a storied uniform and play top tier football for a Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, Texas or Alabama, etc. Reality is a majority of the D1 programs are not these elite 15 programs. The point is...whether it's traditional, an alternate or both...uniforms are a part of the equation.

hands down...I personally prefer Oklahoma & Notre Dame's traditional & boring uniforms over their alternates or Oregon's metal feathers or Maryland's "Medieval Times" uniforms.

as far as alternates...who cares...if your school has the budget for an alternate...do it.

It's fun for a game or two...most of the students, athletes & the fans like it.

  11. Kinda like we have the interlocking NT as an alumni association emblem and on alumni association merch.

    We were talking about helmets.

not the same...our school can't use per our own Alumni Association...which is ridiculous....but it's on the letterman's jacket?

come on...90 you know me...helmets are simply a "gateway drug" to me...my name is 3XL and I have issues...

    besides...you're screwing with me.

later you can fill in the SAME blank with....West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma....doesn't matter your argument sucks!

  12. that's correct...not on their helmet...but you will see their interlocked SC logo on their jersey and a lot of their spirit merchandise.
The Trojans are part of the 17% of P5's that use mascot only on their helmet & part of the 91% of P5's that use initialed logo (SC or USC) as a big part of their spirit gear. (see attached)
  13. "Where do you go to school?"

    "North Texas"

    "Where at in North Texas"

    "Oh... UNT"

    "Oh, got it, ok."

Really!?! ..that's one of the weakest 90 post.

Most anyone "who is talking college" within 400 miles knows "North Texas" & anyone outside that 400 miles doesn't care....

Your reasoning or example above is total b.s. for any directional or state named schools....Southern California, North Carolina, Western Kentucky or Western Michigan....you pick...doesn't matter.

Now schools like Tulane, Villanova, Vanderbelt & Marquette...they have other issues...non North Texas issues....like too expensive, hard to get in, my dorm doesn't have a valet and nobody knows where they're located...ha!

  14. I don't want any recruit tat bakes a college decision based on uniforms or helmet stickers.

They simply won't be smart enough to succeed at football at the college level, much less successful at the actual college part of college.

I think I read what you're saying....and feel most of us on here would "agree" with you....but it is a small part of today's equation.

This thread is really less about what a recruit likes, doesn't like and is he going to succeed on the field or in school and more about branding & marketing like a big boy college.

Do we want to look more like North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Baylor, Texas A&M, Texas Tech & Auburn?

    or

Do we want to look more like Southern Miss, Troy, Western Kentucky, Western Michigan, Nevada & the University of Pheonix?

  15. From the other thread, this is more or less exactly what we need right now:

*BUZZZZ* Wrong. Boise became Boise when they started to recruit better. How did they start to recruit better? They won games against lower competition.

Right now we are getting some 3* recruits. Boise was at that level also at the start. Then they beat up some lower competition, and they started getting MOSTLY 3* recruits, kept doing it, got a 4* every once in a while. etc, etc. Then they beat OU.

No I don't want to play them at all. Maybe once every few years. I think if we had better leadership in place we could develop better revenue streams and not have to play those paycheck games at all. Once our recruiting improves to where we could be competitive from a pure athlete stand point, then lets play the P5.

That's what Boise did, they beat up the small teams AND THEN recruited well AND THEN beat some of the big boys. Look at their wins at the start:

1998: CalState(nor), Portland St, Utah, Weber St, Utah St, NMSU (we beat this team)

1999: Southern Utah, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Utah St, Ark St, NMSU, Idaho (We beat this team also)

2000: New Mexico, Northern Iowa, Central Mich, Eastern Wash, North Texas, NSMU, Ark St, Utah St, Idaho, UTEP

2001: UTEP, Idaho, Tulsa, Fresno St, Nevada, Hawaii, SJSU, Central Mich

2002: Idaho, Wyo, Utah St, Hawaii, Tulsa, Fresno, SJSU, Utep, Rice, LaTech, Nevada (ranked 15th)

2003: Idaho St, Idaho, Wyo, LaTech, Tulsa, SMU, SJSU, BYU, UTEP, Nevada, Fresno, Hawaii (ranked 15th)

2004: Idaho, Oregon St, UTEP, BYU, SMU, Tulsa, Fresno, Hawaii, SJSU, LaTech, Nevada (ranked 12th)

2005: BGSU, Hawaii, Portland St, SJSU, Utah St,Nevada, NMSU, Fresno, Idaho, LaTech

2006: Sac St, Oregon St, Wyo, Hawaii, Utah, LaTech, NMSU, Idaho, Fresno, SJSU, Utah St, Nevada (They beat OU in the Fiest)

See that? 9 years, 88 wins, 7 FCS teams, 2 P5 teams (a terrible Oregon St program, and of course the great win against OU)

Thats how you build a program, bring in FCS teams, schedule other G5 teams, especially the one struggling. No reason a university this size shouldn't have a program that can bring in an Idaho or NMSU as a paycheck game every year.

this...I wish there was a +2 option on GMG!

  16. And even then Baylor's is incredibly ugly.

    #anemicpillars

agreed...every time I drive by....I can't decide if the new Sic'em Stadium is better suited as a venue at Opryland USA or at Jim & Tammy Faye's Heritage USA.

personally...I am very proud of how well our Appogee Stadium turned out...
