  1. Only when it's in our favor.

Exactly. But in all honesty, it's just a frame of reference. Especially after they finish their college football careers.

The more important thing is a player's offer list (who you beat out and who wanted him at some point), his highlight tape, and production. We have players who have some pretty sweet offer lists, great highlight tape, and absolutely dominated on the high school level like you would hope to see from your signees.

  2. Maybe so, but 49th in rebounding sure looks a lot better than 332nd in assists and 250th in FG %. Not that any of that really matters, since we are obviously doing very few positive things consistently on a team basis, while the individual performances deserving of accolades are pretty few and far between themselves. I guess I'll just have to grab hold of any ray of sunshine I can dig up this season.

Yes, but does 224th in the country in rebounding margin look a lot better? Because that's what we are.
  3. Rebounds are the only major area where we're ranked Top 50 nationally, but yeah, a Benford OOC schedule is likely going to get you some rebounds.

I think we have the second to worst rebounding margin in the conference. Or something like that. We've been bullied on the boards and been outrebounded in almost all of our conference games. Not to mention BYU outrebounded us 60-38.

As has been said on here, rebounding may not be one of our top problems, but it has been an exposable weakness. Our total rebounding rank is very misleading.

  4. Does playing an FCS team count as a win towards bowl eligibility? If it doesn't why would we waste our time with them? Either way I'm happy not to play FCS teams.

Yes, it does. I think the catch is that you can only count 1 win against FCS opponents towards your bowl eligibility per year. I think the other catch is that you can't count an FCS win towards your bowl eligibility in back to back years. So scheduling an FCS opponent in 2015 may not be in the cards. A lower rated FBS opponent like Idaho would be preferable anyways, for bringing a team in for one game.
  5. technically yes but we haven't yet confirmed if he is a walk-on or scholarship. Everyone on this list has either been offered a ship (full, reyshirt etc) or signed an LOI.

Actually, I don't think he would. I think FBS scholarship transfers count towards the signing class of the year in which they become eligible. Think guys like Trice and Anthony Wallace. Trice was here for the 2011 season but was a part of the 2012 signing class, then began playing in 2012. Unless they graduate then transfer as a grad student (like Russell Wilson, basketball guys like Vaughns and Gaines). Then they count immediately, but it would still technically be the year they become eligible to play for the new school.

But yeah, I would expect Reese to be a walkon. At first at least.

  6. Man, what a stacked football conference this is becoming. Especially in the east.

Charlotte and ODU are located in two of the best per capita recruiting hotbeds in the country (Charlotte and Chesapeake/Norfolk). FIU and FAU are in South Florida, maybe the all-time recruiting hotbed and right up there with Dallas, SoCal, and Atlanta as the best recruiting regions in the country. And those are the schools that are not supposed to be the big name football schools in the East. Throw in that prestigious Marshall football program, a school that won't settle for mediocrity in WKU, and a similar school in MUTS that is stationed in one of the budding recruiting areas in the country in metro Nashville.

We might have all these Texas schools, Southern Miss, and La Tech to deal with, but going forward the East division schools will provide great competition. Really need to establish ourselves as the premier Texas school in CUSA. Can't be playing second fiddle to any of the Texas schools in CUSA.

  7. there's still a chance that C-USA makes that adjustment for the 2015 and beyond schedule. There was a note that this 2014 schedule would be independent of any other schedule. Keepin' my fingers crossed

Exactly. This schedule and last year's schedule are and were both independent. UAB will be added to the fold in the west and from there the conference will be set. This also assumes there will be no departures in the next two to three yeas which is never something that should be assumed.
  8. West Texas schools used to have success by just being tough, hard nosed kids. When your other option is being a roughneck then a grueling football practice sounds like a vacation.

Now being a top program means the kids have to have access to strength coaches, speed coaches, qb coaches, etc outside of the program itself. Most of those kids can't afford it, and even if they can, there just aren't many of those coaches out in that region.

No one is falling all over themselves to setup a prime prep clone in Amarillo or Odessa.

Still, there are still good recruits out there, Abbe was from Lubbock Monterey and TexTech has made a program out of turning kids like OHS's Bradley Marquez into NFL wide receivers.

Yeah, I agree. Actually played against Marquez in the first round our senior year. One man show, let me tell ya. I agree about all those factors, not to mention the schools over here are bigger as well. At least that's what I remember. Then you've got the schools like Allen that just have way too many kids, coupled with those resources and it's not fair. School size coupled with resources over here just make it almost unfair.

Also agree that those areas should still be targeted in recruiting. Just not as primarily as other regions. I'd rather target East Texas kids right now.

  9. They split up Abilene/Abilene Cooper, but kept Odessa/Odessa Permian and Midland/Midland Lee in the same district.

I hope they can prove me wrong, but football west of Abilene is dead. It'd be very good for Texas High School Football if the Midland and Odessa schools rose up to prominence again, but they just haven't been relevant statewide in a while.
  10. Not a fan of 9 and 10 team districts but II guess with so many more teams than even a decade ago it's bound to happen.

I agree. As a player, I loved having big games against the non-district portion of our schedule.

But if you're going to let 4 teams into the playoffs out of each district then the districts might as well be big and tough.

  11. Quick thoughts:

UAB will join our division next year once Charlotte joins CUSA as an east division team, but they will be in the east this year. We still get to play them in Birmingham on October 11th. Very winnable road game, which brings me to my next point.

Road games: Rice and UTSA on the road will be tough, but they should be winnable. Especially if they have trouble replacing their qbs (I think they will). UAB and UTEP will both be road games we should win. I have a feeling UTEP will be the most improved team in our division, especially if Showers stays healthy.

Home games: La Tech (4-8), USM (1-11), FAU (6-6), and FIU (1-11). Couple those guys with Nicholls State and we have 5 home games that our chances look good in, although too early to truly tell. USM should be much improved as well. If we beat SMU in Apogee on September 6th then we should be looking solid going forward with the other 5 home games.

We duck MUTS, Marshall, WKU, and Old Dominion. FAU could make a case that they are better than one or two of those teams, but it looks like we got the bottom two teams from the east (FIU and UAB). Again, too early to tell.

    The season starts soon, right?

  12. One of the best pieces of knowledge I ever took from my high school coach was something that I've found to be true in all sports and in most team related goals (i.e. work). Your team can only realize its true potential when its best players are also its hardest workers.

  13. THERE IS A LOT about this that I don't like. Eeek.

I honestly have faith in the guys. Players and coaches. I think there was a tweet about having the seniors vote on whether or not to lift on MLK day and they voted unanimously in favor of lifting that day. They want it bad.
  14. Looks like Apogee in the background at the very start of their video.

I think he's Northwestern bound, but he had a good time getting the attention. And I don't blame him. If you think we had a twitter war for him, you should see the big name recruits who tweet stuff about every college they are interested in to get their followers count up over 10K. Those guys end up getting at it.
