  1. Yeah, one major thing you need to realize when you look at a kid's offer list is which offers are committable, meaning which offers are still good and which schools that offered a kid at one point or another are still actively recruiting that kid. We did a really good job of getting the kids that we wanted. We obviously didn't get everyone we wanted, and definitely not every kid we offered, but with a smaller class we really made strong pushes and got a high percentage of the kids who we targeted and made a priority. Especially once spots in the class were getting tight and we were not actively recruiting all the kids we had offers extended to, including the ones who were still uncommitted.

As for Wilson, none of those offers were still good. He was once a consensus 4-star on all the major recruiting sites, but his stock plummeted during the spring of his junior year, and the summer before and during his senior season. When teams saw him in person they were not impressed. But once a team offers, recruiting services leave that offer up. Even if a team pulls that offer or it's no longer committable.

  2. Offensive lineman from Flower Mound. Played opposite Chris Miles. 2nd team all district 5-5A. Big kid, very strong. Plays high at times, but very common among 6'5" high school o-linemen playing against much shorter competition. A lot of potential. We offered per his twitter.

  3. Yes a good guard group can compensate for a weak front court or the lack of one. Villanova is always a good example. They normally go with 4 guards.

I don't believe our guards are good enough to be considered a good group. Decent group, but not good.

When the big dance rolls around I seem to always favor the teams that are guard heavy. They just perform better.

Especially in a single-game elimination format. Villanova had one of my favorite teams to watch in 05-06 with Allan Ray, Randy Foye, Kyle Lowry, Nardi, and a big man. 4 guard lineup that won a lot of games. Benford also coached a Marquette team a few years back that was similar. Dominic James, Wesley Matthews, and Jerel McNeal were all guards and their 4 was Lazar Hayward, who was a small forward. But those guys were exceptional guards, like you said.
  4. A good guard group cannot compensate enough for a very weak front court.

This is the main reason why Benford is not good long term, to me. As 90 said, you can blame it on the players, but when it's different players every year, where should the blame really fall? Benford is the constant through this all and as long as he's here it's hard to see us ever having the posts we need to really win significantly. Voss is doing a decent job, but he is 6'7" (listed, more like 6'6" in person) and has trouble on defense. But he's the best we have. Obviously, the production from Gaines, Coleman, and Flannigan forces Voss to play heavy minutes, and have to play the 5 often. I also have a hard time believing that Benford's other former commits would be helping out (Arthur Casimiro, Tony Nunn, and Josh Friar).

Another great point that is made on here is by CMJ. His point is that if you want to blame the individual games on players, that's cool. But the season is reflective on the coach, at least as much as the players. That's true for the season, and definitely true over the course of multiple seasons, as the roster changes.

I'm not personally calling for Benford's head ASAP, but if we keep him after this year we'll need him to replace Chris Jones, Jordan Williams, and TJ Taylor, as well as all of our current posts. As scary as replacing those first three guys is, I'm even more scared about what our front court recruiting will look like. Will we have a player over 6'7" on the roster in two years?

  5. I haven't seen Combs play, but few healthy bb players are ever red shirted. On a team with one inside player with any kind of game, Combs would be getting playing time this year as would Westley if he was eligible.

I do think NT has the making of a good team next year, that is why they should make a coaching change: not a reason to keep Benford.

In theory Cooley has a point as to why a redshirt might be a good idea, but Combs won't be redshirted. You're right. Especially if he can be an upgrade to our current 4's, especially on the defensive end.
  6. Figure of speech Billy. I don't see anymore victories with him in the lineup unless there are changes. Did we win many more games with Tony Mitchell? In a better situation, the kid should gradually move into the lineup. I just hope our fans aren't setting themself up for a letdown. He is better than Flash so I guess that would help the team. I always thought he would be a major factor by his junior year. Maybe going up against Voss in practice should help him mix it up. He really needs Voss' body.

Absolutely agree with that. We certainly did win some games during Tony Mitchell's freshman year because of him. That South Alabama game comes to mind. But yes, that's just one game and very few single players can increase a team's win total significantly.

Are you saying you thought Flash would be a major factor by his junior year? Because he currently is a junior and will be a senior next year.

  7. Like Coombs but he is a very thin undersized (6-6) power forward that wont help this team at all; as it is currently constructed. He needs better players around him to make a difference. He really needs a redshift year to prepare physically for the college game.

I think saying he won't help the team at all is a little extreme, but I haven't seen him play in person like you have. But I do agree with you for the most part. I don't look at him or Wesley as guys who can carry the team, at least offensively, but guys who can really contribute to a good team.
  8. Time to fire Benford. Experiment failed. He has no excuse. He has talent, the fans want to be engaged but he's got nothing.

It looked like he had reclaimed some faith from you, not that you were the only one, after that UAB game. Turns out UAB was just a not-that-good team that shot the ball poorly that night. Same with A&M. Their basketball team scores less than their football team.
  9. sounds like we got a cool kid on our hands... im pretty sure a d-1 scholarship offer is a big deal.

I get that for a Denton kid UNT isn't the flashiest offer. But he liked the junior day and was impressed. All these kids that visit come away impressed. Wish the initial perception was better, but at least we're impressing the kids who see it first hand and give us a chance.

  10. We won't get him. Even if we're at the top of his list initially a "Big 5" school will swoop in to fill out their bench.

Probably. TCU will be tough to beat out even if it's just them. He's a lot like Chucky Hunter, and I'm sure the coaches will sell him on that and plenty more.

But still, making a good impression on him early on is worth a try. If he chooses to wait out the process, with the 25 scholarship per class cap, the bigger schools might be filled up. TCU already has 7 commits, so if he waits they could be filled up. Or any other big schools for that matter. Not saying that'll happen, but just more reason to make good impressions on these big time prospects, aside from them transferring if things don't work out at the big school.
