  1. When your parents have the money, sometimes scholarship offers are no better than walk-on offers.

Like Luke Del Rio (Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio's son), who was actually the qb at Valor Christian after Berglund left, turned down a scholarship offer to play qb at Oklahoma State in favor of a walkon opportunity at Alabama. After his first year this year he is already transferring. Unfortunate these kids who've had everything handed to them don't know what to do when things aren't.

  2. Yes, it really is so very easy to do..,and fun sometimes to watch the response...not as funny when the shoe's on the other foot is it? But, you know...kids these days....LOL

Glad you have emerged for the "all us young guys" crowd as their anointed spokesman now. One gets tired of the same cute little stuff over and over and over...so little creativity....but, kids these days...what you gonna do?

Don't let it get to you...it's the internet, it's a fan board...go back and read some history here, "all the young guys" will tell you it's OK, it's just opinions...well, it's OK IF your opinion agrees with theirs...kids, kids, kids. LOL. Enjoy the ride....it's GMG.com and it's fun.

    Hang in there... :-).

Yup. And a little advice; if you really want to rile us up, the use the term "rustle your jimmies." We'll understand better and it'll get to us more effectively. For example: "It's so easy to rustle you kids' jimmies these days."

  3. I think his point is that this coming season is 2014 so he should be eligible for the 2015 season, not 2016.

Gotchas. Meant to say he'd be eligible in 2015 as a redshirt senior. Been in basketball mode this weekend. 2 basketball seasons from now will be 2015-2016. But yes, he'll sit out 2014 and play his final season as a redshirt senior in 2015. What I meant to say, sorry. Thanks for catching it!
  4. Interesting how many here think basketball players are kids and are not to be blamed for their actions either on or off the court, yet the same is not accorded to football players...I give you all the fan venom tossed at the HOD most valuable player, Derrick Thompson. Quite the double standard being reflected here by some.

Let the justifications begin in 4-4-3-2-1.......

Yes. That's exactly what people are saying ;).

Come on Kram! Reading comprehension! 4-4-3-2-1? What is that? The new zone defense Benford will try to run next? That makes sense though! Maybe with that zone our players (kids or adults?) will not get tired so easy! So easy to rile you up!

  5. Why would he not be eligible in 2015?

Has to sit out per transfer rules. If a player is on scholarship at an FBS school and transfers to another FBS school then he must sit out a year. Even if he isn't going to be on scholarship here. He wouldn't have to sit out a year if he graduated from Wyoming and came here to be in a grad program that they did not offer. Not the case in this instance.
  6. marcus trice's spot is going to Zed Evans... a transfer from LOUISVILLE which is a much better program than Wyoming... and who says Mac isnt recruiting "all that well?" especially in the secondary? idk if you have some sort of allegiance to this kid, that's great, but he isnt gonna just show up and take a starting or even second string job... this isnt a JC, there is legit D1 talent in the two deep at every position on Defense even after graduation!

I wouldn't count out Freddie Warner taking the free safety spot. He was actually ahead of Zed Evans before he got hurt.

  7. If he's class of 2011 then he will only have 1 more year of eligibility after sitting out next year. 3rd year of college right now, next year (his redshirt year) will be his 4th. Then 2016, when he becomes eligible, will be his 5th year of college (redshirt senior season).

Edit: Meant to say in 2015, when he becomes eligible.

  8. Stop calling them kids, they are men, you turn 18 you are a grown man! 18 year olds can enter the NBA. So kids play in the NBA? Really... And when did I blame the team? I just said that it did not fall together. The team is working hard. Learn to read. And the 7 people who liked it need to do the same. I never once blamed anyone on the team! However calling an 18 year old a kid is a joke,

18 year olds actually can't enter the NBA. They haven't been able to since 2005. Some kids who graduate high school early/start school early are 17 when they graduate high school. Those kids might be 18 after their freshman year when they get drafted, but it's very rare.

Who do you think you are telling CMJ to grow up?

  9. Man, keep thinking about this game and the thing I keep coming back to is Jordan Williams getting fouled and making that 3-pointer with a chance for a 4-point play at the line. One of my biggest pet peeves in basketball has always been missing the free throw on and "and 1" play.

Maybe it's because it's my pet peeve, but I've noticed many times in basketball games, particularly college games, that a missed free throw after an "and 1" sucks away the momentum that the play initially generated and is often a turning point. The play made it 31-19 but after we failed to make it 32-19 it was all MTSU from there on out, even if it had nothing to do with the failed 4-point play conversion in reality. Just a rough loss.

SN: Jordan Williams passed Alzee Williams as the team's leading scorer. Now leads the team in both scoring and rebounding.

  10. 2016, geez. Baseball stadium construction is pretty cut & dry, easy and fast. I know there will be legal hold ups, but if noses were to the pavement 2015 could be doable.

It's more than just the stadium. We need to hire a coach (UTSA hired Coker over two years before they played a game), then let him get his staff, spend an entire recruiting cycle picking out the inaugural class, and have an inaugural signing class. When a team starts a new D1 program they get an inaugural class that will get to redshirt a year together and practice. Then they get a second class to come in and they play ball.

Again, using my UTSA example; they hired Larry Coker in March 2009. He then had the entire spring and summer to evaluate the class of 2010 kids he would recruit during their senior year of football in fall 2009, as well as JUCO guys. Then they came during fall 2010 and spent the year practicing and redshirting. Then their recruiting class of 2011 came in fall 2011 and they kicked off their first season.

So basically, if we were able to hire a coach this spring, he would have to rush to sign a bunch of high school kids this spring before they graduate in order to redshirt them next year and have them ready to play by 2016. Unfortunately, very few D1 players are left on the board this late in the year.

I think 2017 is honestly more likely, unfortunately. We need to sign a coach this spring or summer, spend this spring, summer, and next school year getting a coaching staff and picking out the 2015 recruits. Then the 2015-2016 school year those guys would redshirt and practice together, and the coaches would bring in class of 2016 kids to give us two classes of recruits to then compete in the 2016-2017 season. So spring of 2017 I would guess. And that's if we hire a coach this spring. 2015 is impossible, 2016 isn't much more likely.

  11. Right again. My guest at the game said that if there was a white version of Tony Benford, it would be Kermit Davis.

Kermit sure handles us everytime we play, though. We haven't beaten them since 09. Anytime we play against Kermit, he makes sure we know first hand that it's not easy being green.

Sorry. I'm sure that joke has been made too many times on here.

  12. I think with this last scholarship we have this year we will just have to take the best player we can get. Hopefully PG and Big men will be addressed the following year.

We will need to recruit both next class regardless. Not getting a point guard with this last spot would be a very dangerous proposition. We'd need 3 shooting guards to rotate in when CJ goes out and would hand over the reins to a guy the year after with no experience running this team.

Although that did work out for us a few years ago when we pulled in CJ. But it would take us getting a prospect like that and we'd need to start winning to get someone like that. Starting a new guy at the 5 in two years would be tough as well, but that's the spot you put yourself in when 7 of your 13 scholarship players are in one class.

  13. Outside of your glib ending I thank you for your input. I have been on this board for close to twenty years and it never seems to amaze me how excited everyone gets over highly rated recruits yet pan the ratings sites for all of the low rated ones. I have been a fan for too long to not realize this is the best coaching staff we have had in Denton since Fry. There is little doubt that they will get the best out of these guys and several will become stars. With that said a person can expect more. Our sights can be set higher. Not one of the four major recruiting sites has this class in the top of the conference. I for one would like to see that change.

End wasn't supposed to be disrespectful, just meant to say don't criticize the class without having all the information you need to properly judge it.

Yes, it's hard to judge CUSA class rankings on these websites because they devote very little effort towards evaluating these kids once they see they are not getting a lot of big school offers and they don't commit to one. But we have a very good class and a very tight knit one as well. Couple these guys with solid walkons we will continue to bring in, and likely a class that will probably be even more decorated each year going forward and things are looking great.

  14. I was thinking he was out of high school. Well we still have one more scholarship. I was thinking a big man but they are running thin for next season.

Big man will be a major priority next recruiting cycle, but we need a point guard more direly. Particularly because CJ needs a backup next year. All the high school big guys are taken so if we add a big guy now we'd be looking at something like another Armani Flannigan type prospect, and no backup point guard for next year.

Gaines and Coleman will be seniors next year so we will definitely need to get some centers. Not to mention our 4s; Colin Voss and Flannigan will be be seniors so we will need to look at adding at least 3 new post players, and at least 2 guys who can play center. Wesley and Combs are both undersized at the 4, so we definitely need some quality height.

  15. I thought it was only one JUCO guy Ward. The other guard was a freshmen I thought. I could be wrong though..

Two. The other is Deandre Harris, a combo guard from Milwaukee who Benford recruited at Marquette when Harris was in high school. Harris spent last year at Tyler Junior college and averaged something respectable like 12-13 points/game. He is also a 2-guard and is supposed to give us some scoring punch off the bench as well as a consistent 3-point threat (Benford said if he were on our roster right now he'd be our best three point shooter).

He had a weird situation. Something like Tonsilitis forced him to miss the beginning of the year for TJC so his coach told him just to redshirt so he'd be a redshirt sophomore when he gets here, rather than a junior.

  16. So the plan is to redshirt Wesley? That's fine but this team is senior and junior laden right now and that could come to haunt us if we don't get solid recruits that actually make it the court with the next recruiting class.

They had no choice but to redshirt him. He was ruled ineligible for the year due to some sort of grades thing, from high school. It was very odd but, as Andrew said, he should be good to go by next year.
