When has Mac shown that he might consider replacing the starting qb?I see your bold prediction and raise you with the following hunch:
DW will be the starting QB by the 3rd game of the season (conference opener).

So many of the good high school players in the state and across the country sign during the early signing period that there just isn't much left. And a lot of the kids who don't sign in the fall are often kids choosing between schools like Kentucky, Kansas, and Syracuse, and are just waiting to pick until after the season to see who declares for the NBA.To me, it means Benford is trying to save his job, and is willing to sacrifice the future of the program to do so.
So it's sort of a combination of things. 1. He needs to win now 2. He got his butt whooped this recruiting cycle trying to land the high school kids he wanted, save for Jeremy Combs 3. The high school kids left are either out of his reach or projects who would be risks because they may never develop and would take some time even if they were to develop.
I'm sure he has/will continue to kick the tires on high school kids left, but those factors I listed above make JUCO prospects much more likely.

Wow. That's extremely unfortunate.

South Park did it better.

I believe Wade will count towards our 2015 signing class, but the rest have played at least 2 seasons for us as walkons, including Tony Johnson.other walk ons that earned scholarships were Keenan - punter/kicker, Lynn - tight end, Chelf - wide receiver and Wade - defensive back.

Easily may not have been the right word, but it greatly improves our chances. Imagine the Georgia game last year if they didn't have the SEC's all-time leading passer, but rather an innacurate QB. Their running game will be tough to stop, but it'll be a lot easier if we can stack the box.Easily?

If being 6'3" were all it took to see the field here, Darius Terrell would've started over one of our starting receivers who were 6'0", 5'9", and 5'8", respectively. And Terrell has some game too, which I think he'll show us this year.I get what your saying, but TCU has a good recruiting tool called conference affiliation. They could snag 3 or 4 WR's in the next couple classes and maybe in just one signing class that are bigger, stronger, and faster than Thomas. That would leave him standing there on the sideline googly eyed asking what about me. At 6'3 he would see the field at North Texas. It's just the way it is.
But yeah, TCU could get some good receivers to go along with Thomas. I can't see them snagging that many receivers bigger and faster than Thomas. Those kind of receivers are out of TCU's grasp unless they start proving they can compete in the big 12. Heck, if Thomas has a big year I think TCU could have a hard time holding onto him. Especially with him entering just his second year at receiver.
Bottom line is Thomas could play early at either school if he proves his flashes of potential are not a fluke. Likewise, if he isn't ready to play D1 football after just two years at receiver, he'd have trouble getting into the rotation at either school.
-
Ideally for them they'd be able to redshirt him, but I don't think they will have that luxury. Especially if Ash is out. Strong also had some success playing Teddy Bridgewater as a true frosh. Not that Heard is as developed a passer, but still. Maybe some worth noting.I have no idea, but I would assume they would want to red shirt Heard

The big haul of receivers that TCU pulled in with the 2011 signing class are now seniors this year. 1 of them was going to be a redshirt junior (Ladarius Brown) this year after finishing 3rd on the team in receiving, but he was dismissed.
They have another solid outside receiver who will be a junior this year, and a senior when Thomas comes in for the 2015 season. It'll be wide open and he'll have a great chance to play as a true freshman, and especially the years after that.
But yeah, to say his choices are to play here or sit at TCU is not looking into this situation. If he ends up realizing his potential he could play early at either school. If not he'd also have a hard time cracking the rotation early on at either school.
SN: I wouldn't mind seeing Jalen Adams redshirt this year and learn to play both inside and outside receiver. He could help us out at both positions, and we don't have a bevy of outside receivers. I think Adams may have more potential at cornerback, but I think he'll be a good WR if he stays on offense.

Tyrone Swoopes, and incoming freshman Jerrod Heard. If it's Swoopes, force him to throw the ball and we can easily keep the game close.Who backs up Ash?
-
Yup. And it could be his first season with a full 13 eligible scholarship players available.Would not be wise for Benford to add a transfer who is not eligible immediately. He needs to win and win now. Next season is his best , and maybe only, shot at doing so.
Oh wait, I just realized why that may not be a good thing.

Picked up his first P5 offer from TCU.

I would say it's unfair because the ones we see and have a good idea about are the OC (Canales), DC (Skladany), and S&C Coordinator (Wintrich). Other than that, we really can't give fair judgments, as a whole, of the rest. This is an unfair poll. This is like asking you "Who's your favorite child" or "Who's your favorite parent."
Pass. "I love them all equally."

Fortunately we have Jordan Williams, who's a guard on offense and also 6'6" and our best rebounder. He can be a mismatch on offense and still hold his own on defense. Unfortunately he's gone after this year and we need Benford to replace him.We should just play with four guards, a small forward, and do the VCU Havoc press.
-
You're right that post play couldn't get a lot worse. But even then, it's hard to see it getting better by adding guys with no other offers. We all new it was coming. Hopefully we just get a decent JUCO big and move forward. Post play could t get a lot worse so potentially this is an improvement.
We're probably better off getting another wing type player and having Voss, Ahmed, Flannigan, Greg Wesley, Jeremy Combs, and Jordan Williams be our posts. The only one of them over 6'7" is Flannigan, but getting a big man who looks lost on the court just to get a big man won't help.

They go on scholarship as soon as they get to campus.I guess I'm unclear how the process actually works... if a player transfers to another school, when does he actually receive his scholarship with that school? as soon as he steps on campus? or after he has sat out his year?
-
CJ, TJ, Mo, Jordan, and Voss. Just roll the 5 out there and hope for the best. Jordan is our best rebounder anyways.

Walkon was always the plan with him. Don't think he enrolled in time for this semester. Could likely see him in the fall, then sit out a year and play in 2015. Whether or not he earns a scholarship is tbd.Whatever happened to Chad Reese, the Wyoming player who had one year of eligibility left when he showed up on our doorstep? I know that he has to sit a year but will we still offer him for his final year?
-
I believe so. If one of our scholarship transfers were to quit, I'm not sure if they would still take up a spot in the 2015 signing class.assuming all these guys pan out... continue playing football and earn their scholarship, right?
-
There are two restrictions on how many kids you can sign. The 25 cap per class, and the 85 max per class. You can exceed 25 only if you were short of 25 the class before. You can then exceed 25 by the number you were short, as long you have at least that many mid-term or sooner enrollees.BTW Billy, with Busby quitting football does that add yet another ship to the class?
With Busby quitting we currently have about 62 scholarship players on campus right now, not including Richmond, Bean, or Sam Rice who would be a part of the 2015 class. We have 14 freshmen signees set to enroll in the fall. That would put us at 76 scholarship players from the 2014 signing class or earlier.
That leaves 9 scholarship spots, plus 17 rising seniors from that group, for a total of about 26 spots currently available for the 2015 class. So the Busby departure does open up a spot in a way.
-
Unless we were to sign a late-qualifier for 2014 (like Hafoka Olie) we should be able to sign 27. Since we were 2 short of 25 signees this year, we can sign 2 over 25 next year as long as at least 2 of the signees enroll by spring 2015 semester or earlier, which won't be a problem.9 of how many? 25?

Mccrary, a unanimous 3-star player on all 4 major recruiting sites, has picked up a Rice offer recently but no P5 offers still. This kid could be a stud safety for us, and our safety depth chart is running low with David Busby and Jamarcus Jarvis both quitting since last season ended.
We will return just 3 current scholarship safeties in 2015 in Freddie Warner (will be a senior in 2015), John Shilleci (will be a junior in 2015), and Kishawn McClain (incoming freshman, will either be a Soph or RS Fresh in 2015). We could really use a ready-to-play freshman this class. Mccrary could be just that, and I hope we're making him a priority.

If Erick Evans is put on scholarship that means two things:
1. First and foremost, he earned it and the coaches think he is a valuable member of this football team. Not just during the week and offseason, but also on game days.
2. He only played 1 season with us as a walkon before being put on scholarship, so his scholarship will count towards the 2015 recruiting class.
If Evans is indeed put on scholarship then we may be looking at another signing class that is already pretty filled up. SMU OL transfer Sam Rice, A&M DE transfer Jordan Richmond, Buffalo LB transfer Blake Bean, and UNM DB transfers the Jackson twins will all count towards the 2015 class as long as they all come in on scholarship. Not to mention the 3 grayshirts DL Jon Graham, DL Shaq Jackson, and QB/ATH Caleb Chumley.
5 transfers (if all our coming in on scholarship), 3 grayshirts, and a walkon puts our 2015 class at 9 spots potentially already filled up.

That's huge. A commitment would be big in multiple ways. Shocking to me that he has no other offers, playing in arguably one of the top 5 football hotbeds in the country in Atlanta.
His film is very impressive IMO. He has good size and good speed/agility, in part evidenced by his coaches moving him to linebacker. I think Kelly would make a very good jack linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, but he could definitely be a good end in a 4-3 for us.
