I agree here, Lifer. 2013 showed there is interest if we can build up a winner. Marketing from an AD who actually tried something might have helped us, but it goes back to not being associated with a winner. The thing that people don't realize is just how powerful the influence of others really is for going to college football games. People want to go to games that others will be at--in other words, most fans don't want to go to games where there are more open seats around them than full seats. Sure, there are diehards that go to our home games, rain or shine, hot or cold, FCS or FBS, etc...but the love of being able to tell their buddies that I've been to every game to watch us play since whenever loses its luster when there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately for us, since the Dickey SBC run was winding down, the light at the end of the tunnel ended up just being a train--Dickey wins 5 games in his last two seasons and burns every bridge he ever had built here, we hire Dodge straight from high school and we win 6 games in his tenure here. We hire McCarney, who talks a good game and takes Dodge's recruits and puts them into an actual college regiment and builds it up to bowl winner in 2013, only to watch it colossally end in failure just a year and a half later. And now we have Littrell, who looks and talks the part, but has to deal with almost no talent for his schemes. We sure hope the light we see is in fact, the sun, not a brand new train again, ready to bowl us over in another couple of years.

I think Wren Baker is going to really make us feel better going forward, but he's gonna have to have a winner to help make this thing work. Even if RV wasn't a terrible and lazy AD, the product we have spoon-fed our fans in the last 11+ years has been absolutely unacceptable. No amount of marketing would have made the Dodge years any better, nor would it have made the last two Mac years any less embarrassing.

    True on Dickey.

I think Dodge could have been a big success, IF he had not been allowed to bring his entire HS staff with him.  There were a few good coaches in the group, but that was an astronomical mistake.

Mac didn't hold his staff accountable to recruit, probably due to some alleged off the field issues, and turned what could have been a good thing in to a mess in a hurry.

Littrell, his staff, Baker and his new hires, along with renewed support from our administration should have us on the right track.  Only time will tell, but all signs are pointing upward.

Fair enough...  I suppose I don't have much of an issue with pregame either.  It's likely just a difference of opinion.   But I see them go out on the field in a position to welcome the players onto the field and play music (and this season, used some of this time to try and educate the fans on cheers) until the players come out.

I see lots of mentions of Ohio State 'dotting the I' and the Aggies marching back and forth across the field crossing over lines and stuff... that, to me, doesn't move the needle.  Maybe with you older guys, it's amazing.

My only real complaint on the pregame is how they enter the field.  They just kind of stroll out and find their spot.  I would like to see an organized march on to the field.  I also hate the t-shirt and short look.  It is better than the past in that they all match, but I watch other schools in hot, humid, southern stadiums and their band is always in uniform.  We should do the same.  When I was a kid they always were in uniform and the materials used back then had to be brutally hot compared to what is available now.

  3. What is an NY6 bowl game?  I get New Year's but what does the 6 represent?

We are referred to as a cupcake because we are; RV did everything from hiring the wrong coaches to establishing a lousy schedule year in and year out. Until we have a coaching staff that can go out and sell the UNT program we'll still be a cupcake. BTW, there is absolutely no reason we can't compete with the likes of U of H, SMU, TCU and others for 3 and 4 star athletes. We have a lot sell here in Denton, you just have to be convincing and know who to contact; coaches get off your ass and go recruit!!!

I agree with everything except the last sentence.  This coaching staff isn't lazy.

In 2013 our average home attendance with 6 games was 23,509 in a stadium that seats only  30,850. That averages to about 75% of capacity, which is just O.K.[lets give us a solid "c".] We still have not gotten close to a sellout because of the poor product we have been trying to sell. While I agree that winning cures most problems, it doesn't cure all as illustrated by 2013 attendance. In my opinion, we just can't be a one hit wonder. We need to establish a successful winning tradition, which takes time. At 73 I am running out of time, patience , and interest.

Imagine what would happen if our AD, at that time, had really marketed the UH game opening Apogee and marketed all games in that manner.  Considering they really did nothing, then 75% is outstanding.

The MOB is a bunch of rag-tag students with no authority over them.  There is no value in what they're doing other than their own entertainment, really.

As for the Green Brigade...  many of the students in the GB are going into Music Ed as their profession.  In that field, they will be responsible for directing their school's marching band.    As much as many of you dislike the style of marching, the style the GB uses is the same that most High Schools in Texas march.  Honestly, I don't know why some of you old guys (looking at you SilverEagle) really like when a band marches back and forth in lines across the whole field, or simply spells something... to me that's boring, but you call that "pageantry".
Being in the Green Brigade is a chance for these students to gain knowledge and practice (you know, be educated) for their future careers.   They are not marching/performing solely for our entertainment.

And I know not all of them are Music Ed majors.  Many of them play because they enjoy it.  And that's fantastic.

Their "pageantry" is fine, and their skill is outstanding.   Sit back, relax, and enjoy "The Best Band in the Land".

I have never had an issue with the GB's halftime show, it is the pregame that needs a lot of work.

It was the last sell out of Fouts that I remember, and PD were having to ask people to move from sitting in the aisles.  Very little standing room.

And yes, Davis got an invite to a Pittsburgh mini camp in the spring of 1990.  He got cut just in time to make it back to Denton to be Scott Bakula's body double and stuntman in NR.  All the long throws you see in that movie are from him.  They had him throw over and over and over for at least an hour during the day then at night filming his passes.  He had a hell of a strong arm.  Several college players had trouble catching his pass during an NFL open try out he got hired to work at over in Richardson one time.

He's the only dude I ever knew who when he threw a football you could hear the laces whistle in the wind as it went by.

    Rick

Wonder what happened to Marcus Camper.  He never had trouble catching Davis' passes.

  7. Fresno has been a good program for a while, but it is in a pretty crappy area of California.  I think the key is the kids meeting our coaches, getting on our campus, seeing the facilities, diversity of the student body, excellent academic programs, etc... and the coaches selling the vision of where we are headed.  I love the energy of our staff and really expect them to excel at recruiting.  I also take Littrell to be a selective person, really going after specific players for the system and not just throwing a net out there like I think the previous staff might have done.

  8. Proof that we hired the right man for the job.  Convinced more every day that Coach Littrell will turn this program around.  #GetLit

Here's why McElwain really sticks to his story.  He knows he doesn't have the horses on both sides of the ball to win the SEC and needs to keep his team engaged and fired up.

  9. The struggles against Florida, who arguable has one of the best defenses in FBS, don't concern me as much as the other teams we have played.  Their DB's may be the strength of their team, but our WR's just appear timid.  Well, other than Kelvin Smith, and we need to involve him more in the passing game.
