  1. I was a KNTU news announcer in '71-'72. The great Bill Mercer taught our announcing class. Only one person got an A from him, and he had been a radio professional for several years. Doug Adams, who went on to be station manager at KXAS ch. 5, was there along with another guy who DJ'd for KZEW. I think his last name was Rogers, Rodgers? He had a great underground radio voice. I'm sure many more went on to R-TV-F greatness. Lots of talented people in the program. I was the News Director for a small radio station in Oklahoma for a while before I fingured out I wanted time for a life!

  2. FYI, I was checking out the U of Tulsa website for campus location and noticed they've got gametime set for 6pm on Sept. 16. Campus is about 3 miles east of downtown. We're planning on making the trip. See you there!

  3. I found this site a few months back while looking for something else. Found a picture of my roommate in '72-'73 and a picture of the Radio-TV-Film Club members. I can't figure out why I'm not in it. I must have had class or work or something when it was taken. Wonder where they are now.

  4. My thoughts exactly, UNTLifer! The rules should be the same for the worst player on the court and the best player on the court. I don't get why the refs constantly call for the so-called superstars and let their personal biases affect their calls. I call that CHEATING. What happened to playing by the rules? Fairness? Sportsmanship? I agree, the Heat are laughing all the way to the basket. All the money involved taints the pro game. (BTW, I've been a Mavs fan since the franchise began in 1980, through good and bad. I've still got the old gear I bought when it was new!)

  5. I agree Screaming Eagle-66, people who have never spent in time in West Texas just don't understand the total obsession with football. In Abilene, the junior high games were on Thursday nights and they were just smaller versions of the high school games; pep ralles, bands, cheerleaders, homecoming (yes, in junior high). "Friday Night Lights" only gives a glimpse. You have to experience it for yourself, but the true glory days are over, though AHS has been very successful the past few years. Unfortunately, I was there during the heyday of abilene cooper. My parents still live outside of Abilene and there's been talk lately of consolidating the two high schools and building a new facility due to falling enrollments.

  6. Graduated Irving High, class of 1970, although my allegiance belongs to the Abilene High Eagles. We moved to Irving from Abilene the summer before my senior year in 1969. Abilene is where I discovered the joy that is FOOTBALL! Go EAGLES, BEAT cooper!!!

I did go to junior high with Jack Mildren and Randy Allen, now the HC at Highland Park. Also with a girl that became a Playmate and lived with Hugh Hefner for about a year right before Barbie Benton, I think, but I can't remember her name. Maybe Pam? She was a blonde with a crooked smile. I always thought it was funny that she went from Abilene to the Playboy mansion. We couldn't have dances back then because the churches had such a stranglehold on the town. We couldn't wear patent leather shoes because they reflected what was under our skirts, we couldn't wear pants, and no sandals because the sight of bare toes would turn the boys on!

Also, got to throw in a GO PANTHERS! for daughter. Colleyville Heritage, class of 1999.

  8. Mine was the 1971 game at the Cotton Bowl. I didn't remember the opponent (BYU, thanks letsgiveacheer), or anything about the game. I just remember taking a bus there from Denton and almost getting left in Dallas because we couldn't find our bus for the return trip. We ended up riding back on a bus with some fraternity guys and their dates, but I don't remember which one.

  9. I'm the first in my family to get a degree. B.A. in '74. Met my future husband in '71 in front of Willis Library (he was not a student, just on campus visiting a mutual friend). My daughter graduated in May of '05. We're the only two so far (that's why the x2), but if I ever have any grandkids, you can bet that grandma will be pushing NT!

Football: Mean Green land two more football commitments

07:16 AM CST on Tuesday, January 17, 2006

By Brett Vito / Staff Writer

Chris Neal did a little of everything during his high school football career at Kaufman.

He played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back in addition to returning punts. It was that versatility that helped land the District 12-3A MVP a scholarship from North Texas.

Neal confirmed Monday afternoon that he has orally committed to play for the Mean Green, who also picked up a commitment from Stafford linebacker Craig Robertson after a weekend visit. Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day high school recruits can sign national letters of intent is Feb. 1.

“I was an athlete who played a lot of positions in high school,” Neal said. “Coach [Darrell] Dickey said he didn’t know where I would fit in yet, but I think my best chance to play might be at cornerback.”

Neal, 5-8, 162, set a goal to become a Division I player several years ago and jumped at the chance when UNT offered a scholarship. He cancelled visits to several smaller schools, including Midwestern State and Arkansas Tech.

“North Texas was the first Division I school to recruit me,” Neal said. “Getting a chance to play there was an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

Neal played quarterback as a senior when he rushed for 804 yards, threw for 175 and finished with 300 yards receiving. He was timed at 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash last summer.

    Robertson, 6-0, 210, was a second-team selection on Texas Prep Xtra’s Class 3A All-Greater Houston team.

The addition of Neal and Robertson gives UNT nine commitments heading into its second weekend of official visits. The total includes four junior college players who transferred at the semester break and will participate in spring practice.
