  13. SAN DIEGO -- The Cowboys are nearing the end of the training camp practices, but there is a battle growing for a spot as a backup running back. DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones aren't going anywhere. Behind them are Phillip Tanner and Lance Dunbar. But injuries to those two have allowed fullback Jamize Olawale to emerge into the conversation. Dunbar returned to practice Monday, but Tanner won't return until next week. Neither have played in a preseason game. "They're all in the mix," running backs coach Skip Peete said. "We have to evaluate that at the end of the day." Olawale's biggest thing is playing at pad level, which means he runs straight up and he needs to bend down more so he can inflict punishment on opposing tacklers. Olawale has speed and showed some movement when holes are not present. "He's a bigger guy, he's 235 pounds," Peete said. "Obviously he'll have a thrust; whether or not he has more power, I don't know. He's still learning how to play the position. He's still learning how to get his pads down a little lower to deliver a blow to the defense. Once he masters that, he can be a force to reckon with." Dunbar is expected to play this week and Tanner should be a go for the final preseason game. Both players, however, are behind in reps and opportunities to impress the coaches. "He's got to get back in there and get a feel," Peete said of Dunbar. "(Monday) it felt foreign to him. He's a talented runner. He's a much better protector than I anticipated for a guy his size. That's a plus for him and that's impressive. He's a very explosive player and very dangerous. I'm excited to see what he can do in a preseason game." Peete noted Dunbar and Tanner were doing well before injuries sidelined them. "He's mentally into what we're doing" Peete said of Tanner. "He's got a feel into what we're doing and of our offense. We got to give him an opportnty to get in there as a runner. http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4696051/backup-running-back-battles

  16. IS UTalmost really getting this big? and football soon? If we ever get passed by them I will be very From star telegram: WAC sees whole new ballgame on UTA campus Read more: http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/07/14/3222925/wac-sees-whole-new-ballgame-on.html#ixzz1SDB26cAh Well, what about Arlington? The University of Texas at Arlington is expected to welcome 36,000 students to campus this fall, making it the state's fourth largest university. This isn't your uncle's UTA. Having long ago shed its commuter school label, today's UTA houses a greater percentage of its students on-campus than UT Austin. It has 90,000 alumni who live in the North Texas area. Benson saw the differences two weeks ago, when he toured the campus. "I wasn't expecting the amount of structural change that I saw," he said. "The College Park Project is going to be a key to the whole growth of the university. "I was impressed with the energy and the vision that president [James] Spaniolo has. When I reported back to the WAC board of directors the day after I was here, my comments were not just positive, but that this was something we needed to do." In terms of familiar faces, the WAC is indeed a shadow of its former self. But the league has history going for it. It has its name. And maybe most importantly, it has a TV contract with ESPN. Read more: http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/07/14/3222925/wac-sees-whole-new-ballgame-on.html#ixzz1SDB7ohGa From UTAlmost website: (Ave age is 27 - are they really going to have any school spirit?) The student population is non-traditional in many ways. Most students enter UT Arlington as transfers, many with 60 or more hours already completed. The average age of students in fall 2010 was 27, and 43 percent were enrolled on a part-time basis. According to the 2008 Student Survey, 69 percent of UT Arlington students hold jobs, with 32 percent working 21 or more hours per week. It should be noted, however, that the cohort of traditional first-time freshman is growing. The size of the incoming freshman class has almost doubled since 2000, reaching 2,805 in fall 2010. These students have an average age of 18, almost all attend full-time, and about 53 percent of first-time freshmen live in campus residence halls or apartments. http://wweb.uta.edu/catalog/content/general/about_uta.aspx BTW - I grew up in ATOWN so I am allowed to dislike UTAlmost, trust me I'm not the only one. It's a joke - decent acadimics I give tehm that.
  17. Pls help me stop having to explain to my kids why they never see UNT stuff with all the other Texas colleges stuff @ grocery stores, malls, restaurants, etc. Get our damn stuff out there – or at least load up a car and drive to every restaurant in DFW and give away flags / jerseys to hang up. Can start with Double Daves in Keller and Buffalo wild wings in Arlington (Just got back from lunch there, they had every college in Texas & Oklahoma except for UNT (At least I felt that way). Want to improve PERCEPTION / IMAGE then start with two things: 1) Prove with facts (If possible) that we are NOT a commuter school 2) Get our merchandise out next to the other 4-5 schools people care about around here I’m tired of explaining to my kids that UNT does not have any shirts @ Kroger like the OTHER 4 schools because….mmmmm, well I don’t really know- So the answer is “We are not very good in football”. It’s embarrassing to Alumni to eat @ a restaurant in DFW and not see us represented like the others! I’ll volunteer to drive around and give the stuff away – Man, am I the only one that feels this way?
  18. IMO – we have TOO many transfers. Having kids on campus all 4 years will help, I think when we allow so many transfer students – they just want to finish up their last 2 years and get out. HERE IS THE PROBLEM! More students transfer to UNT than to any other university in Texas, according to U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2010. In fact, UNT was 4th nationally among public universities.
  19. I really have respect for Riley; those statements show a maturity level I never had at that age. He is a winner regardless of the adversity we have had the last few years. I like how I can tell my kids about Riley because he is a true ROLE MODEL!!!!! They can learn from him, hell I can learn from this young man – how tough it must have been but he keeps his commitment. He is just one of those guys you want to succeed
