  2. While we have a good contingent traveling to New Orleans this weekend, many of our fans could not make the trip due to work or family issues. For those who are there please share some pictures and stories from the trip here for those who aren't able to make it! Safe Travels and GMG!
  3. With the roster appearing to be set, Vince Ellis looks at individual Pistons players and assesses expectations for the coming season. Todays player Power forward Tony Mitchell Power forward Tony Mitchell How obtained: Second-round pick in the June draft the 37th overall selection. Looking back: Considered a potential lottery pick before an uneven sophomore season caused his stock to drop at North Texas. Even casual observers can notice his effort in getting back to help on defense wasnt up to standards, but the Pistons are intrigued by his athleticism and size. His salary: $500,000 (Year 1 of three-year deal). Looking ahead: A lot isnt expected this season, so there probably will be a D-League stint. 4. Ok... let's try this again. I know I'll be down in the area, but are any of you other Uptown folks (MDH) interested in attempting to get together something for Tulane? Thinking Christies or somewhere.
  5. It’s the season of college football, tailgating and game day drinking. Schools like the University of Louisiana-Monroe began allowing the sale of alcohol inside their football stadium this year, but purchasing and consuming alcohol inside Apogee Stadium is still prohibited. “We know that in the past four or five years a lot of schools have been allowing alcohol sales inside their stadiums,” Senior Associate Athletic Director Eric Capper said. “There is sort of a national trend to start allowing that. We are in constant consultation with university lawyers, the university president and board of regents members to determine if it’s a good situation for us.” Capper said that any institution or athletic venue that allows alcohol sales inside their venue has shown an increase in revenue. “The thing that we have to weigh is at what cost does that revenue line then impact negatively our fans, our students and the people that come to our game,” Capper said. “It would bring in more revenue, but we have to balance that with making sure that it’s a friendly and safe environment for our people to watch games.” Capper said the obvious safety concerns associated with the sale of alcohol inside the stadium include underage drinking and overconsumption. “Binge drinking is a huge issue on college campuses, and we want to make sure we are doing our part to avoid that,” Capper said. Vice President of Pi Kappa Phi and converged broadcast media junior Taylor Lindholm said that if alcohol were sold inside the stadium it would not only increase revenue but also attendance. “If you go to an UNT football game, you see a lot of empty seats,” Lindholm said. “The games are always exciting, and they are free for students, but this doesn’t seem to fill the stands. I wish it wasn’t this way, but selling alcohol at the games might significantly boost attendance and support for the Mean Green.” Alcohol can currently be consumed at The Hill, where student organizations tailgate before the football games, next to Apogee stadium. Lindholm said his fraternity tailgates before every game. “Members who are over 21 sometimes choose to drink. Too often people see the passed out, ‘frat guy’ stereotype, which I despise,” Lindholm said. “Football is like a religion in Texas, and tailgating is a significant part of our culture that UNT has thankfully embraced.” Alpha Tau Omega member and dance junior Christopher Lafuente said he thinks tailgating is important because it gives everyone a chance to get together and get excited before the games. 6. Denton police will step up patrols in the neighborhood, especially on Highland Park Road and the area around the Duck Pond. While the police will be patrolling the area, they depend on neighbors to report things. Residents can report illegal parked cars and other nuisances through the departments main line, 349-8181. Once connected, and the recorded menu begins, press 9, for the duty officer. Give the officer the nature and location of the problem, and they will contact one of the officers in the field. 8. Mesquite linebacker Jalen Montgomery committed to UNT on Thursday night, one week after attending the school’s Talon Talent camp for top prospects. Montgomery worked out with UNT linebackers coach and defensive coordinator John Skladany at the camp. The connection he felt with Skladany and safety Marcus Trice were among a number of factors that led him to commit to UNT. 11. Hey folks, So a user named TexaninNYC and I will are participating in a grand series of Reddit/r/CFB threads that is covering 139 college football teams in as many days to fill the time before the 2013 season. Essentially, fans are asked to go in depth and profile their alma maters in glorious Reddit fashion for all the upvotes, praise and discussion of 47,000 Redditors in the College Football subreddit. Example, today's profile of the Tulane Green Wave: http://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/1bnz54/132_teams_in_132_days_the_tulane_green_wave/ Rather than attempt to compile all of the information required myself (w/Tex'n'NYC), I figured why not open it up and crowd-source this? So, if you have anything in particular you want mentioned in this format, please do not hesitate to PM me. We have some time to make this good - they obviously did not take much of the conference realignment picture into their scheduling, and thus we've been lumped to present with the rest of the Sun Belt in early July. Ugh, I know. So anywho, fire away!
  12. 20. Tony Mitchell, PF/SF, North Texas: Aim high! In a draft full of middling prospects, it seems worth it to go after one of the biggest boom/bust guys we have seen in years. Mitchell is one of (if not the) best athlete in this class and like some of the other players on that list has not impressed this year. That said, Tony did a good job in the U-19 World Championships where he was the per-minute rebounding leader over guys like Jonas Valanciunas and Patric Young. If he can put it together, Mitchell could be an NBA starter and/or an important contributor on a strong team. Read More: http://basketball.realgm.com/article/226689/Lottery-Lowdown
  13. To be honest, I dont write this one with much enthusiasm. (And how excited you must be to read it!) One of the big-dog editors noticed that Dallas and Houston happen to both have new promotional campaigns going. He thought a little rivalry column might be fun, throw a few barbs and all that. I politely resisted. But then, coincidentally, Larry McMurtry went and upped the ante. In an essay in the current Texas Monthly, McMurtry took it upon himself to rank the states six major cities. I would now put Houston first by a large margin; its a great city, he wrote. Next would come Austin and Fort Worth. Then, with only harsh words, he goes on to put Dallas in fourth place. I havent enjoyed Dallas since the sixties, he said. Dallas is a second-rate city that wishes it were first-rate. And here we wince. San Antonio is treated kindly but gets fifth place on McMurtrys list, mostly because a favorite bookstore closed, it seems. And El Paso is consigned to the bottom because it just doesnt feel to me like a Texas city. Somewhat wearily, allow me to rise to Dallas defense. Or more accurately, let me rise to Dallas nondefense. 14. I just got off the phone with Jermaine Antoine, the Louisiana cornerback who has been committed to UNT for a few weeks. I also talked with his head coach Trent Delahoussaye this afternoon. A few outlets are reporting that Antoine has flipped to TCU. Delahoussaye also told me that Antoine is flipping to TCU. Antoine told me that he wants to talk things through with his parents tonight. After a while one tends to get a feeling about the way things are going to go with players. I would be surprised if the Louisiana Class 2A all-state selection does not end up at TCU at this point. Delahoussaye pretty much told me that is the way this is going to go, especially in the wake of Justin Gaines leaving UNT’s staff. 15. [i admit this might be fully more appropriate in the general Athletics forum, but as it is telling of the weight of football vs other sports...] I've seen many talk of our "revenue sports" vs "non-revenue sports", or "Football & Men's BB" vs everything else. University of North Texas Revenue and Expenses This stuff is pretty telling. Yes, Football brings in the most at 7.7M, and Men's BB 2.3M, but based upon the expert chatter of GMG, I woud not have expected the combined Womens' teams to be bringing in 6.7M. Yes, in the grand scheme of things, that's only a third of the total AD revenue, but looking further... Total Revenue minus Total Expenses Men's $2,253,591 to Women's $2,097,526 That's an interesting figure to me. Anyway, just wanted to note, that yes, the women make money too.
  16. Thought this interesting, North Texas getting a high rating. Full article.

  20. MURFREESBORO — Think October is too early to be chasing a bowl bid? MUTS and North Texas know differently, as they will face off in Saturday’s Blackout game with potential postseason ramifications. Aside from the Sun Belt Conference race, where both teams have a 2-1 league record, the overall wins total is becoming important for each school. MUTS has four wins with five games remaining. North Texas touts three victories with five games ahead. Teams become bowl eligible at six wins, and there are no gimmes on either schedule. “This is a critical game for both teams,” MUTS coach Rick Stockstill said. “For us, this is big to keep us in the hunt for the conference championship. It’s big to keep us in the mix for bowl eligibility. When you only have two bowl slots guaranteed (in the Sun Belt) and you’ve got four teams with four wins, every game is magnified that much more.” The New Orleans Bowl and GoDaddy.com Bowl are the only contracted spots to Sun Belt teams, but other at-large bids should come open. Bowls are likely to scramble for teams to fill slots, as Ohio State, Penn State and North Carolina have bowl bans and other conferences are projected to have trouble filling their automatic bids. 21. A great write-up on our very own Lance Dunbar and his path to the NFL... "So does Dunbar have the goods to stick with the Cowboys? Well, George believes that if anyone can overcome the long odds that face any undrafted free agent, it’s Dunbar, who says he loves competition. McCarney compares Dunbar to a player he coached while an assistant at Iowa, Ronnie Harmon. Harmon carved out a 12-year NFL career in which he gained nearly 9,000 yards. McCarney says Dunbar has similar strength, hands and versatility." http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/article-1/Star-Practice-Squad-RB-Has-Already-Had-Amazing-Journey-/8c2c4995-8f14-457c-b7d7-e72b29e9b39b
