  1. Miners to get new basketball facility

By Bill Knight / El Paso Times

Jeff and Sharon Stevens and Paul L. Foster have pledged a combined $6 million to UTEP to build a $10.5 million basketball practice facility.

The Foster and Stevens Basketball Complex tentatively is set to be situated on the corner of Mesa St. and Glory Road, next to the Don Haskins Center and where the UTEP Ticket Center currently is located. The facility, which is expected to house three practice courts for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s basketball offices, locker rooms, a weight room and a training center, also will have a Hall of Honor to recognize the tradition of the Miner basketball program

UTEP officials currently are in the process of finding an architectural firm to design the facility.

“We have come up with a vision for the facility,” UTEP athletics director Bob Stull said. “So our vision could look like this, but it also could take on a different format. We are looking at the possibility of putting this where the ticket center is now. But we want to have a spectacular building. It is the only UTEP building on Mesa Street. So we want to make sure it is an outstanding building.”

Stull pointed to the additions of the Larry Durham Center attached to the Sun Bowl and the Helen of Troy Softball Complex as part of the strategic plan he set in motion in 1998. Stull cited the need for the facility due to conflicts in scheduling with the Haskins Center. It also will be an excellent recruiting tool.

Foster is the president and CEO of Western Refining, and Stevens is the executive vice president of marketing for Western Refining.

“To be part of this basketball facility is a real honor for Paul and myself,” Stevens said.

UTEP basketball coach Doc Sadler said, “This is an unbelievable day. A lot of great things seem to be happening here, and this is one more dream

turning into reality. This is the most unbelievable thing that has happened to me, other than getting this job. This will be the finest facility in the country.”

Stull said he joined Stevens and Foster on trips to Vanderbilt, the University of Memphis and the University of Texas, studying their practice facilities.

“This will be a great facility, and we would like to have the coaches’ offices overlooking the practice courts, much the same as the football coaches’ offices in the Durham Center overlook the Sun Bowl,” Stull said. “We already have a number of people willing to join the project—Kathleen Moore wants the training room in honor of her husband (former Miner coach and trainer Ross Moore), Susan Drury wants the coaches’ offices in honor of her late husband (Dan), and Russ Vandenburg wants to sponsor the weight room.”

UTEP president Diana Natalicio said, “We have changed the skyline of our university in the past few years. Paul Foster and Jeff Stevens have each pledged $3 million to help us. Is that not an amazing commitment from those who deeply care about this university? You are enabling us to achieve dreams we have had for this program for a long time.”

The Hall of Honor will recognize the long history of UTEP basketball, including the 1966 NCAA championship and the program’s 25 postseason tournament appearances.

Sadler, still beaming, called this “the biggest signing in UTEP basketball history.”

UTEP has hired a nationally-recognized firm to handle its multi-media sales endeavors, and it consequently has restructured its own marketing department -- which now will focus primarily on advertising -- UTEP athletic director Bob Stull announced at a press conference Wednesday at the Larry K. Durham Sports Center.

Stull said the partnership with ISP Sports, a Winston-Salem, N.C.-based collegiate sports marketing company, is an opportunity for UTEP to expand its name nationally, lower marketing expenses and increase services to Miner fans and corporate partners.

"I am very pleased with this partnership," Stull said. "I think it's a big step for us."

ISP Sports markets, produces and syndicates sports marketing opportunities, including official Internet sites, radio and television play-by-play, coaches' radio call-in shows, coaches' television shows, daily radio and television reports, stadium and arena signage and video board advertising, game programs, official newspapers, corporate hospitality and luxury box suites.

The company is a partner with more than 30 of America's leading universities.

UTEP assistant athletic director for broadcasting Jon Teicher, UTEP's play-by-play man for the past 25 years, said: "Consider, ISP (began) with a single property, Wake Forest University, and expanded to partnerships with nearly three dozen schools. And, in 14 years of business, ISP Sports has never lost a renewal."

Ben Sutton, president and chairman of the board of ISP Sports, said enhancing the broadcast around Teicher is just one of the improvements his company will make.

"We'll do everything we can to give this broadcast a national network-quality sound, which it deserves to have," Sutton said.

As a result of the department alterations, long time Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Promotions, Todd Wyard, will serve as General Manager of the Miner ISP Sports Network. He will continue to reside in El Paso and work in collaboration with the ISP corporate office staff. Assisting Wyard will be senior account executives Rich Barajas and Melissa Ybarra.

Taking Wyard's place in the revamped UTEP marketing department will be Autumn Duffie, who has been promoted to Director of Marketing and Promotions -- which will now become a true marketing and promotions department. Two other positions will exist within that department.

  3. Take whichever side you may, but the fact is Dickey has not been able to help grow the fan base. And YES it is the Head coach’s job to help grow the fan base. How does a program win multiple conference championships in a roll and not greatly increase the number of fans at games? Bottom line, IMO, we can try and blame a bad stadium but there are 2 key things that are keeping this program down –

    1) Sun Belt Conference – say what you want, outside those in the conference no basically cares about this conference. Why is it that OOC performance gets so much more respect?

    2) DD – Give him credit for SBC championships, but DO NOT try and justify his teams OOC performances. Also, his personality is not conducive to motivating and building a fan base.

  4. Thanks I'm very proud of it too. biggrin.gif

Why is it that anyone who supports DD on this board you then assume that they work for the Ath. Dept? My guess is that Quoner is just someone who gets a hard on over J. Quinn.

Why am I supportive of DD and staff and the football team.

    1) He is our coach and he is leading our team into battle every weekend in the upcoming fall.

    2) Where were we before he got here 8 yrs. ago.

    3) Conference Champs, Bowl Appearences. Cover of USA Today, ESPN spotlight.

    4) Back2back rushing champs.

Why am I supportive of DD and staff and the football team.

I guess his record in OOC games doesn’t matter a bit. Then again his comments and jabs at the fans are the fan’s fault.

    2) Where were we before he got here 8 yrs. ago?

This is a legitimate question. We were more competitive in OOC games. Let me add this – Where was the Sun Belt 8 years ago?

    3) Conference Champs, Bowl Appearances. Cover of USA Today, ESPN spotlight.

Again please reference Sun Belt. Without this conference I’m guessing there would not have been any Bowl Games

    4) Back2back rushing champs.

It’s great that we had this success, now let’s hope PC gets drafted.

DD has managed to be competitive in the Sun Belt but outside our conference mates we have not even been competitive. Let me ask one last question. If DD and his coaching abilities have brought such great success why has he never been hired away? huh.gif

  5. This one hurts as I don't know if he will ever see the field at K-State. They just signed a 4* QB this year. So by the time the 4* is gone it will be Coffmans senior year. And most likely they will sign another 4* QB next year or the year after. I thought that he would have been great at NT. Anyway best of luck mad.gif

I think you hit oit on the head. This kid will end up a TE or transfer in a year or 2.
