5 of the last 6. ODU lost in 2019 and the NCAA tournament was canceled in 2020 due to Covid. 2015-2018 all produced upsets (UAB, MTSU, MTSU, Marshall) as well as 2021 with us beating Purdue. Still 5 upsets in the last 6 tournaments should be good enough to earn at-large consideration.
CUSA did get at large consideration. We were on the cusp until this last week. Unfortunately the performances were trending down, not up. If we beat UTEP and lose yesterday in something other than a historically bad offensive performance, we are probably in along with The winner tonight.

The NIT will be back to 32 teams this year. We could potentially play Texas A&M, Texas State, TCU, SMU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, UAB/LaTech, just to name a few schools that will likely miss the NCAA tournament. I am excited about the opportunity to play any of those teams and generally excited about the invite. We have never been invited to play in the NIT. UTA has been to the NIT 3 times and was a quarterfinalist in 2017.
La Tech will be nowhere near NIT contention unless 30 schools say no.

La Tech fans have a chance to see their teams win the men’s and women’s conference titles today.
We were a once in a lifetime shitty shooting half (men) and 3 points (women) away from the same opportunity.
The sky is not falling folks.
And hopefully they get completely annihilated in both games.

I think there are a handful of jobs Grant wouldn’t hesitate to leave for. I can’t imagine Missouri is one of them. I think the radius we need to be concerned about is a little closer than that.

But you assumed if we were in the Big East we would have the same players that we have.
This is a discussion about this year and who is deserving of what. Big East money or hypothetical recruiting are irrelevant to that.

Conference or total?
Either one. We’d be nowhere near .500 in conference playing the same schedule that Providence had to play. And they won that conference. That’s why they are a 3 or 4 seed.

Yeah I get that hence where the problem lies. They were a 3 or 4 and we were a 11 or 12 with AQ with about the same record. You've got teams getting in with an at-large with 10+ losses and/or 30 point losses yet a mid-major with their biggest loss being by 12 to Kansas and less than 10 losses can't get a ticket to the dance.
What do you think our record would have been playing in the Big East?

I don’t sense we have even begun to deal with the ramifications of this loss. We will have to go through some things to get through this.
What does this mean?

I may be miscalculating how bad yesterday was. Lunardi dropped us out of his first 8 out completely.
NIT seeding is going to be interesting.

MTSU just lost to La Tech. They didn’t win the regular season (Charlotte did), but they are far and away the highest net team In the conference. I bet you MTSU gets into the WNIT along with Charlotte If they lose tomorrow.

Any chance of the women going to the WNIT?
Unlikely. The WNIT does have the bigger field than the men, but we are sitting around 100 in the women’s NET.

Very very tough day for NT basketball. Ladies were not ready for that last play at all, looked surprised when they got the ball off the steal.
Looked to me that they, for about 5 seconds, lost track of the score. The shot they ultimately got off was not great (obviously). The moment that sticks out to me is tied 55-55 and Madison Townley was going to the line and missed both. We never got back into the lead that I remember but got close on multiple occasions.

I'm overly positive but I still think we have a good chance at an at-large. We lost 2 of our last 3, yes, but by a total of 8 points. Our biggest loss it to Kansas by 12. Other than that, it's a few 3 point losses, a 2 point loss, and a 6 point loss. It's a good look that when we lose, it's not by much. Others on the bubble can't say as much.
Lunardi put out this morning that if we lost to La Tech we were toast. I’d look for us to land in the next four out and have a top 2 seed in the NIT.
if we’d have won UTEP or today I think there’s still a chance. But not after today, especially how they lost.
They need to regroup and make it to Madison Square Garden.

If LATech wins the Championship, then yeah. If no, their NET may not go up enough & they’re just over 100 right now, so that’s a Q3 loss for us as it stands. Meanwhile we’ll likely drop down to the high 40s-low 50s.
And the NIT is gonna want to put some of these high-major bubble teams in the higher seeds to give them the better opportunity to get to NYC.
The loss to UTEP dropped is 5 spots.
-
There’s no way we aren’t a top 2 seed. Our NET is going to finish at like 42 or 43.

Just a friendly reminder that we still have a team in this.

No...he said it doesn't take away from what they did accomplish. They accomplished what they accomplished. That's what can't be taken away. Not what they didn't accomplish.
That’s fair. I think my point is the season will be viewed through the lens of where it ended.

Tough way to go out but doesn't take away from what they did accomplish.
I mean, it kind of does doesn’t it? Isn’t that exactly what it does? I still love the team, but I think that’s the reality of the loss.

We had so many chances to win this game.

Despite all the silly turnovers and missed shots we are somehow still in this.

I know it’s what we do but it bothers me a bit we are continuing to milk the shot clock. We don’t have much choice but to press the issue at this point.

We are toast.
NIT Here We Come!

The champions list from the NIT is not even remotely on the same level as the CBI and CIT. For all we know we’d have made the sweet 16 in the NCAA, but we are where we are. If we could somehow make it to MSG or win the thing it would be probably be the biggest accomplishment in program history.
