  1. I don't see our women's soccer coach making up excuses on how hard it is to recruit talented players to North Texas. He instead developed the program into a consistent winner and built its solid reputation as North Texas=Attractive soccer destination in Texas.

Coach Hedlund has his men's program pulled from him like a thief in the night. I know, I was in the room when he announced we weren't gonna play the 1994 season. What did he do? He stayed on and built a quality women's program from scratch. That is a coach who sees opportunities not excuses. We need a guy like that!!!!

  2. Well for Herman, 1.35 million dollars a year might have a little something to do with it.

    Bingo! We have a winner!!!!

I hate to say it, but Cougar King has been more than fair to us this season. U of H is a quality program and may run the table this year to an American Conference Championship. We on the other hand are in a hole and with luck have stopped digging ourselves deeper.

I am sure Cougar supporters would like more participation/attendance but Houston is a huge city with lots of options for entertainment dollars. I would think that the school would do more to advertise their success, but as a resident of the Houston area I just don't see any Pro-Cougar love.

Not much of that really matters. The Cougars are taking care of business on the road and at home.

    We don't do it anywhere.

Now Cougar King can go back to his trolling from his mom's house with a smile on his face.

  3. As in he solely focuses on offense and not defense? And even then his offense isn't really that good?

Offense was good enough to win a BCS bowl game at a perennial basketball school... However I am with the mob on this one. He hasn't been relevant in years. Nor do I think he can connect with modern recruits. I do like us meeting with a name that has some national notoriety.

  4. Exactly Ryan, Exactly

At least Rice is worth the money. Baylor, TCU, and SMU are way to expensive for what you get. People associated with those three schools see us as less than TTU and on par with SFA, SHSU and perhaps Southwest (I refuse to call SWTS Texas State. Just principal). Their loss. Denton is a great town and and UNT is excellent school for the money.

  5. I think this week against UTSA will be a better barometer of how good he is.......hopefully.

The pillow fight of the year!!!!!

But seriously, this will be a good test of Smith. I think the kid has potential. Just needs to get the reps at game speed.

  6. They need to quit sending in two plays for now, the runs on the edge were killing them.. We do that from the start and it's a bit more respectable and good lord can we run routes that aren't either all verts or a 3 yard out route? Also, getting a bit tired of Several players I won't mention specifics but anytime something doesn't go their way it's hands up slinging head around pouting like a 7th grader... Grow up. If it's a problem address it on the sidelines not between Lines!

There was one on a quick receiver screen that was horrible. Makes the whole team look poorly coached.

  7. Agree.  Linebackers looked terrible today- Anthony Wallace seems like he could never get off a block.

Our defense looked terrible in the first half.  They were better in the second, but still way too many misses tackles.

Defense settled down and played well in the second half. Give Smith some time at QB. Hopefully he will learn to audible to a play more suited for the look the defense is giving. The no back look w/ a blitzing defense just didn't work. It was a disaster. Hopefully this will be fixed in films this week. I know it wasn't a win, but I think it was a step in the right direction. If not for this season, then for the spring and next year.

  8. We should be Texas State but the state of Texas would not let us use that name. It was set aside for A&M.

I have heard that argument in the past. Is there any truth behind it? If so, how did Southwest get to become Texas State. I don't think Texas State is part of the Texas A&M system. I know there is a "directional" university stigma. I don't know if that was the catalyst in changing the name of a few Louisiana state universities, but we still kept a directional distinction in our name. Whatever the reason, we aren't referred to as North Texas State as a "nickname", we are called that because we haven't given anyone a reason to learn our real name.

It not that we don't win it because we virtually never win.  When was the last time the Mean Green won a regular season game against a well known successful program on national TV?  Answer: NEVER.  We have never even made a game like that competitive in the 4th quarter.  Let's look at our record against FBS schools in our region that started playing FBS level before 1990

    UTEP: 14-6, Texas Tech: 4-4, Houston: 7-7, Rice: 2-4, Tulsa 7-17, SMU: 5-29, Baylor: 1-12, TCU: 1-17, Oklahoma State: 1-10, Oklahoma: 0-7, Texas: 0-7 and Texas A&M: 0-7

Therefore college football fans in this region outside of fans of UTEP, Texas Tech, and Houston have not reason to respect our program or get the name right.

All the more reason the athletic department has to hire a big name coach with national prominence.  They need to set aside 2.5 million dollars to hire a head coach and hot up and coming OC.  The money is here in the 150k plus local alumni pockets.  Why this AD has not made a huge push to get small donations from the average alumni and not just business owners.  If the AD could get $3,000 donations from 10,000 local alumni UNT could hire anyone they wanted.  A thirty million dollar boost in the revenue could pay for improvements to Apogee, hire a coach with national prominence, and hot young coordinators with strong regional ties to work under that coach.  The AD should be bold and come out a say, "I want go out an hire a coach that would command 2 million dollars plus on the open market.  And for a truly special coach I would be million to pay 3 million.  I can't name individuals with jobs right now because that would not be classy.  But you can go down the list of coaches by their salaries look at the coordinators and head coach making around 1 million or more; those are the ones I am interested.  Telling you local frustrated alumni who doesn't understand why we are on par with Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,  Baylor and TCU, that we need a commitment from you to step up to the big boys.  And my pledge to you is to be transparent about how much we have raise and how much further we have to go to reach our financial goals to go and get the coaches a lot of P5 conference programs would want"  With his track record RV can't do that now because he has no credibility.

Well said. I believe many on here, including myself have called for a donation system which leverages small donations from many versus going after deep pocket donors.

  9. Fly the BANNER!!!!!! If someone doesn't think 66-0(I mean 7) by a FCS team isn't embarrassing to all connected with this university then I will never see eye to eye with them. I am sick of lame excuses that constantly filter down from the AD. RV has been unable to seize the moment twice in the last 15 years, the bowl years and HoD bowl. Time for CHANGE....................and the peasants are restless!

Call the banner what you will, but it will be tough to ignore.

  10. Agreed on Ararat. Brilliant on so many levels. Personal for me as well.

I recommended Ararat to someone just last week. I am amazed at how few people have seen it. But then again many are clueless about the subject matter of the film. Perhaps we should all come up with a list of hidden gem films, broken down by genre, that we can watch on Saturdays in the fall. Then we could avoid the un-watchable football our university produces. It won't make it go away, but maybe we will discover some films worth watching.

    We are a RTVF school!

    Just a thought.

  11. Base D - 4-2-5 with heavy blitz packages near or around 35% of the time. Hard press with a lot of 1 deep with a shaded safety towards the LOS and/or wide side of the field. If we're going to get beat deep, we're going to do it hitting the QB in the mouth.

Offense would be based on what I have at my expense. Based on current recruiting trends and recruiting history, I would try to implement some form of option offense. If I couldn't in fact recruit what I wanted/needed I would go full triple option.

Conference wins are the name of game. A system similar to this would make us competitive and get us over the 6 game win hump and hopefully towards a CUSA championship. Got to go with a system that you can recruit to and be successful. Lots of athletic kids in Texas who are told they can't play QB at the P5 schools. Perhaps we could be that destination of such kids in a triple option system. It works for service academies...

I too am a fan of a 4-2-5 or a 4-3, depending on the situation. Personally I would like a defense based on fundamentals like tackling and position responsibilities. Odd concept at UNT.

Think of it like a woman. Dress for the body you have, not the one you want!!!!

If you don't you look silly...

  12. It is a shame there is no longer a men's team. The UNT 1994 team may have been the best that was ever fielded. We will never know. There is plenty of talent in the area to field a Div I men's program. I don't know why the university isn't willing to try. However it is just one of the many things about the UNT athletic department that baffles me...

  13. During the Great Fire of Rome Nero watched from his palace on the Palatine Hill singing and playing the lyre. Just saying history repeats itself.

    Sigh, shiiiiiit....

The firing of Mac surprised many. Perhaps the President will do the right thing and show RV the door. If not we will see more of the same. However don't fret, we are used to mediocrity!!!!
