  1. This will be my first game not in the club level. My well heeled buddy is so disgusted he didn't renew his season tickets. I just hope the beer lines aren't long. This is Denton Texas, a town based on drinking. What happens on the field is so depressing you have to drink in the stands!!!!

The lip service I (as well as many, many others) received from their fans suggest otherwise. Beat the absolute dog piss out of them in Apogee (again), they will start to hate that they hate us.

The don't like to lose to us. Got it. I just don't think it is much more than that. Specifically because they "believe" they are better than us. On and off the field.

    He's right, you know.

Dallas Morning News called UNT one of 4 in-state rivals. At least that is the piece I read. I don't live in Dallas so perhaps I am missing some in-depth piece into the rivalry. I would bet the students and alumni don't share that opinion. At least last year at Ford Field the rank and file SMU crowd could care less that we were there.

  4. Now that football season is starting I would like to hear the board's opinion of who is UNT's rival for football? I know many may say it is SMU, but a rivalry is two ways. They don't rate us. We are the poor public school kids. They are the douche bags who paid private school prices for a public school education. As much as I would love a rumble with the South Side Socs, I mean what would be cooler than beating a guy and getting to say "stay gold pony boy" (forgive The Outsiders references). Outside of the illegality of a rumble, the ponies just wouldn't show. We aren't in their universe. So I pose the question, who is our rival?

For me it cannot be UTSA. That gives them a certain legitimacy that I just can't stomach. We have been playing football for over 100 years, albeit mostly badly, but this johnny come lately just can't justify the visceral response that a rival brings. UTEP has regional rivals in UNM and NMSU, and they are UTEP (before you hate on me I am from El Paso. UTEP sucks). Perhaps we need to create one? My vote is LA TECH. Why? Because I know nothing about them. But what I do know: They are an established Div 1 program that is road trip distance from Denton, Texas. Sure so is Rice, but no one cares about RIce. Maybe LA TECH already has a rival like UL-Lafayette, or Louisiana Monroe. I don't know. But I think there is a chance would could build something...

Anyways looking forward to the group's opinions.

    Soccer instead of Baseball?

It would be a successful program. I believe the start up cost would not be as large as baseball from a facilities perspective. Neither would make money. I admit I am biased. I was a soccer player. I feel about baseball the way I am sure many of you feel about soccer. However if we get a team I would gladly support the them.

The cancellation of the men's program was a total shock, however thru that rough spot John was a class act. He even coached many of the former players in a bid for the U.S. Open cup as fledgling professional soccer players.

Many people given John's circumstances could have been pissed at having to take on a women's program from scratch. John just worked hard and made us all proud. I hope one day he is truly recognized for his efforts, however of what little I knew of him from back in 1994 I doubt he would ask for any attention.

Well, if we want to shatter the "commuter-community college" image, then stating that we've been established  as a institution of higher learning since 1890 is a good way to do it. We've been around longer than SMU, Rice, Texas Tech and Houston. Just to name a few.

addendum: We are the same age as OU. Both of us established in 1890.

UNT has done of poor job of marketing for awhile. I am glad steps are being made to showcase our appeal. Denton is an awesome place to go to school. It is about time we show it to the world. Or at least the state...

Maybe you ought to take a harder look.

AState has moved into the range of AAC in attendance. We now self-fund $15 million getting us in the ballpark as Houston.

Built a huge new press box with premium seating, new indoor practice facility, next up is a new field house with offices, new training room, new weight room, new meeting rooms, and even more premium seating.

Outpaced most of CUSA in season ticket sales. Outdrawing 75% of CUSA in football.

I visited Arkansas State last summer. They are taking themselves seriously. That is the first step. If you don't take yourself seriously no one else will...

I agree. We have 5 teams we can realistically compete with on our schedule for actual wins: SMU, Butt Cookman, @Army, @UTSA, and @UTEP. I see us winning one at home (BC) and one on the road (UTSA is my guess). Obviously, we could win more than two, but I think getting above three means Littrell was the best hire we have made since Fry and it will probably cement the fact that he will be coaching somewhere else higher on the foodchain in a few years.

BTW, I still will think Littrell will be coaching somewhere else even if we win less than two games this year--because absolutely nobody in the college football world see us winning more than two games with the depth issues of scholarship talent on the roster and the character issue that is being addressed now (hopefully) within the locker room to try and make sure we never have a team quit on the university ever again to the point of allowing us to have another worst loss in modern college football history.

What last year's team did on homecoming was tantamount to mutiny. Everyone associated with this team needs to prove to the fan base that they are worthy of our support. I know that sounds harsh, but the players should expect that. They took drastic measures (the homecoming beat down). Now they need to earn our trust and respect. I bleed Green, but I don't have time for quitters.

I hope Coach Littrell has the team ready to play 4 quarters. If he can do that then we will be competitive.

We aren't a demanding fan base. Play hard, display sportsmanship, and we will cheer for 4 quarters. Win or lose.

    Go Mean Green, Beat SMU!!!

See you all in the stands!

Public intoxication was a cherished part of my college experience. As long as he wasn't anywhere near a vehicle this seems like an extremely minor offense.

I don't trust a man without a public intoxication/minor in possession under his belt. If you don't you just didn't do college right! Thank god there wasn't twitter, instagram, and whatever the hell else there is today when most of us were at UNT. If so we would be asking "do you want fries with that" instead of at our current positions.

For the record I am not degrading fast food workers. It just isn't a job that becomes a career!

    Give the kid a break.

  11. Watched the Rice game on Saturday night. Saw no passion or desire. It was sad. Rice would kill to have BB facilities like UNT. However you can't clown them for playing in a high school type of gym when they beat you. The culture at UNT needs to change. It is embarrassing.

  12. If I were him, I'd go to Rice. He isn't going to pro in football. Their baseball program speaks for itself. And he'd light up C-USA as a QB in that system. There's also a good chance it's not going to be on the list of restricted destinations (you can bet the entire SEC West will be.)

Granted, I am fully aware it's difficult to go from playing in front of 100,000+ fans to playing in front of 203.

He is exciting to watch, however he is terribly undersized. Rice is an interesting proposition if he has the grades. I don't know much about the young man but I wish him well. If UNT improves its brand then perhaps we would have a shot at kids like him. In our current state it isn't likely. Baseball or no baseball.

because he's a good offensive coach catching alot of heat from really dumb Aggie fans.

The Aggies just aren't that good. Plain and simple. Never won the Big 12 and are middle of the road SEC West. It is a great school with a motivated fan base, however they have an over-inflated sense of greatness bordering on delusion. Aggie alumni can demand more, but historically they aren't a top tier team.

  13. College Football is uniquely American, however how we settle the National Champion is far from American. Our system is more akin to the Soviet Politburo. When a group of "elites" judge teams on nebulous criteria like strength of schedule and style points you have missed the mark!

The FCS does it the correct way. They have a true champion. It could be done on the FBS level but for many reasons listed above by other posters it won't happen. I am not sure a G-5 school would go all the way, but under the current system we will never know if the Sun Belt or AAC champ is as good as the Big Ten, or SEC champ.

9-3 Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl

12-1 Houston in the Peach Bowl

    That isn't right. Period.

  14. I'm of the mindset "fake it until you make it". Boise State rolled out modern unis and completely changed the image of the program. Like it or not, these kids want flashy unis. They want to look good while they play. All things equal, they're going to the school with the coolest attire.

Baylor looked pretty good losing to Texas this past Saturday...

Boise was good before they started rolling out those new look uniforms.  I see your point, but kids are lining up to play for Bama, LSU, OU and Texas. Those schools aren't changing their uniforms. I know we aren't those schools, just saying that for every school that tries the "new look", there are plenty of schools that keep it consistent.

  15. Careful, that's how two of our conference mates have ended up with the mighty designs of Russell Athletics!

    /s

But really, RV incredibly whiffed on the uniforms this year.

We had New Balance uniforms in the past! Be careful what you wish for!!!!

I say remove any flashiness. Go for the basics. Hopefully it will be akin to taking the team back to basics. Block, Tackle, pass, catch, and learn your position. If we get those correct no one will care what our uniforms look like.

This was my first season on GMG, although I have been a fan since I transferred to UNT in 1994. I know we didn't have much to cheer for this year, but next year is another year. I know we can't expect miracles, but if it is more of the same perhaps someone locate Serrano and his demi-god Jobu and see if we can sacrifice a live chicken!

It is low hanging fruit, but +1 whoever gets the reference.

  16. Now that's funny.

I played on the 1994 Southland Conference Championship team, 1995 Independent team and two seasons of the Big West.

The reason I know the situation so well is because I was the starting long snapper for North Texas in 94, 95, 96 & 97 minus 2.5 quarters during the Oklahoma game in 95. I was benched by Matt Simon before the Oklahoma game for reasons never explained to me. I was told Chuck Mills fought like hell to keep me as the starter but Simon wanted the #2 guy to start. Needless to say I got my job back in the 3rd quarter in Norman after a second bad snap that went over the punters head.

I'll leave the names out even though it doesn't matter now and give y'all the readers digest version. OU pinned us on our own goal line. On 3rd down our tailback fumbled on a run up the middle. It appeared it was OU ball. It wasn't, the tailback recovered. OU ran their offense on the field. Our defense and punt team both started running on the field. Half our team realized it was still our ball. The defense returned to the sideline. OU still had their offense on the field. 10 members of our punt team lined up, minus a future All American/NFL punter. It's the up backs job to count players and he didn't. OU was switching out personnel so it should have been an easy free punt. The up back was screaming "snap the ball" over and over. The long snapper had never been on the field before and absolutely not in front of a sold out OU crowd. He did what the up back told him to do. He snapped the ball out of the endzone, minus a punter, for a safety.

So, who do you think was the long snapper in the media guide? Yours truly. ESPN ran it all year. Letterman called me the dumbest player in college football. My answering machine was full for weeks. My friends make fun of me to this day, although they know what happened.

So, where was I. Truth be told, the punter, kicker and I thought it was a fumble and we had been admiring a couple of OU coeds a couple of feet behind us. Crucify us for checking out girls/cheerleaders but that is standard operating procedure no matter what is going on at 20 years old. The punter saw what was happening and tried to run out. The long snapper should have taken the delay of game and backed up two feet but lacked experience, especially in the craziness of a large crowd.

In the end, I never screwed up a snap in four seasons and snapped the ball to 2 All-Americans who both went on to the NFL. Thankfully, few ever knew my name.

I was sitting on UNTexas's couch w/ his step dad in 2001 when ESPN showed the highlight, it could have been 2002, I don't recall. Craig James still used UNTexas's name, not the kid who snapped the ball. UNTexas went nuts screaming at the TV saying "It was ...., not me!"  In our circle of friends from UNT/Denton circa 1994 thru 2000 we still say it was UNTexas. However it isn't accurate. But since when does a good story have to be accurate!  You always get 10 % bs for comedic value. If a girl is involved you can shoot for the moon!!!

    Good times fellas, good times.
