  1. I said "I think" and you aren't supposed to know about the machine. But you point is well taken. I think (again) that this site would be much less damaging if conjecture was eliminated. But then, most posters would disappear. Yes, much better.
  2. I make no claims or comparisons, just facts. (from my previous post) I wasn't running down the JJ era. I agree, it was our best ever from a competitive standpoint within our conference. We had about 3 good teams under Spika, in a conference that just overmatched us, and Blakely had 3 good teams. We were ranked #20 for a short time. and that's all since I came to NT in 1961. I think Johnny would have had about the same record with last year's team considering the player losses. Tony was the same player under both coaches.
  3. One of Trilli's recruiting classes was rated about 20 - 25 in the nation. Jhonny won 15 with them. How many games did you see then? If you don't know who Dexter is, you don't know that time period.
  4. By contrast, after 5 seasons, Johnny was 63-78. Second season was a 7 win season. He inherited our 2nd all-time leading scorer, Chris Davis. And Dexter. The cupboard wasn't bare. Trilli was a pretty good recruiter. And please, no "best team ever", that has been mentioned about 1000 times here. I know it will be mentioned by one poster, but I have him blocked, so at least I won't see it there. I make no claims or comparisons, just facts. One thing I will say for sure was that Benford inherited the "most hyped team ever". And one other thing. I haven't seen anything but mediocre in either basketball or football since Blakely and Fry. Sometimes it rises to "good mediocre", but still mediocre. 15 or 16 seeds aren't good teams. And I still go to all the home games and listen to the away games 000-01 Vic Trilli 4-24 1-15 (6th)* 2001-02 Johnny Jones (LSU, ‘85) 15-14 8-7 (4th)* 2002-03 Johnny Jones 7-21 2-13 (6th)* 2003-04 Johnny Jones 13-15 8-8 (3rd)* 2004-05 Johnny Jones 14-14 6-9 (T4th)* 2005-06 Johnny Jones 14-14 6-9 (T4th)* 2006-07 Johnny Jones 23-11 10-8 (3rd)*! 2007-08 Johnny Jones 20-11 10-8 (3rd)* 2008-09 Johnny Jones 20-12 11-7 (2nd)* 2009-10 Johnny Jones 24-9 13-5 (1st)*! 2010-11 Johnny Jones 22-11 8-8 (4th)* 2011-12 Johnny Jones 18-14 9-7 (4th)
  5. I asked Tony about the player from the 70s, it was Earl King. Gene Robbins recruit, played 1 year under Blakely. He is in the record books. Scored 31 vs. Niagara, lead the team in free throw pct. 2 years. He is a PHD now, not sure if it was an MD.
  6. Now, there are huge variables in replacing players, including the best player to ever lace up in Mean Green and the unquestioned leader in the locker-room. Huge losses. Kenneth Lyons, John Savage, Joe Hamilton, Lee Winfield (just to name a few) didn't play a game last year.
  7. Goodwin would have been a starter for the rest of her career if she would have stayed and probably had the school record for steals. Probably in our hall of fame. She wants to move up in competion. Good sun belt player, maybe not a good big 12 player, maybe not a starter. She needs to pick wisely. I wonder if she burned her bridges here. Pete has 1 ship left, i think. She can probably find a school that draws better. Crowds usually under 1000 here. Our attendance hurts us in both BB programs. I am talking long term - the past 30 years.
  8. This thread has certainly taken a wrong turn somewhere and I sorry for that, probably my fault. Amazon has an unfair advantage over B&M retailers because of the sales tax, which is being corrected in some states. Buyers can come to your store, find what they want and shop on-line. Same item, cheaper price. I'm impatient, I buy in the store, which is the advantage that the B&M retailers have. Best Buy was given up for dead, but they have made a comeback. I don't buy on-line, so I am all for leveling the playing field. My point about UNT is that you can get many degrees from WGU at a cheaper price than UNT. I think WGU was founded by states and is not a for profit instiution, I could be wrong. B&M universities could be pricing themselves out of the market. It would only be students who wanted the "experience" that would attend. We have a lot of students who only want the degree and could care less about our athletics. Witness the attendance at the games. I think we haven't had 2500 students at a basketball game in 10 years. So there are about 32,000 who aren't using the fee they pay.
  9. Well, her father never said anything much, he skipped out at birth. Her mom (my niece) won't be able to affort $17 - $20k per year for UNT. and there are going to be a lot more students like this. Things change quickly, UNT could become like the brick and mortar retailers competing with Amazon.
  10. Denia folks are trying their hardest to make sure it stays best 'small town' (120k people = small town?) in America. I don't know if you mean good or bad on this. I live there and they drive me crazy. I won't attend their community meetings because they oppose everything. I guess that would be trying to keep it small. They opposed the stadium, the windmills, the dorm at Eagle Point, Acme Brick's operating permit and so many other things, I can't remember. And the proposed convention center? I'm sure. But I absolutely love where I live. It is physically the best place in the world to live. I try to keep as low of a profile as possible so they don;t oppose me.
  11. The proposal was approved by a tiny percent of the student body (under 2000, i think), and it didn't go into effect until the stadium was completed. So the voters were never going to pay the fee. No incentive for them to vote. $1200 for 4 years is substantial for some kids. I have a great-niece who is 13. If she comes to UNT, I will try to get her out of the fee, as Mr. Martin pointed out.
  12. You were saying PP would carry a bad connotation; PP would be fine with me, I donate to it, used it college, think it is a fine organization serving a need.
  13. Mac was tied for #1 with Sumlin when I voted. We can stuff the ballot box, this is Texas.
  14. Planned Parenthood was a popular place at UNT. Their office/clinic was in one of those old houses on either Locust or Elm. How many of you took your girlfriend there? Free BC pills. I like to go because there were a lot of hot girls there. Yeah, Planned Parenthood Stadium. Free BC pills at the concession stands. The motto could be "Because we give a f---". "You say I am in bad taste, I say up yours" --- Mel Brooks
  15. Whether you or I support a tuition increase doesn't matter, we aren't paying it. Right now students pay $10 per hour for the stadium. That's $300 per year for a full load or the equivalent of a season ticket for football and basketball. If we want a athletic fee, put the vote on the registration process so that all 35k will have to vote. I think you would see what the users of the service want. And I believe I said raise taxes, that is you and me paying, not cutting any expenses or salaries - raise taxes. The people of Texas paid for my education through taxes - tuition was $150 a year (I started in 61, my last degree(MBA) was 73). This is a failure of my generation and yours in screwing the current generation. Our gutless legislators won't fund our colleges, remember a few years ago they just turned them loose - charge whatever you want. Many, many kids in the 60s got through school by working, I was not the exception and we didn't treat our education with disrespect. I was the bottom of the barrel economically and I don't think it will water down anything by making it available to the "everyone" you speak of. I was "everyone" My generation and the next one who paid little for tuition are now the major donors of UNT because they know what the education meant to them. I feel I owe NT my donations. It made an enormous difference in my life. If I graduated today, I wouldn't have a chance to go to UNT. It would be junior college and an on-line college or the military. I would rather see us drop sports than raise our tuition to private school levels. There are still a lot of poor kids who just want a chance. And I don't whine. Complaining becomes whining when repeated hundreds of times. Maybe you noticed - you touched a sore spot.
  16. And, you, Eagle61, you seem fine with accepting mediocrity. Maybe I can recognize the things I can do something about. If whining is going to do any good, then I expect a top 10 in every sport because of this site.. UNTnegative wants to gouge the students with a fee. Daddy signed his tuition checks, I'm sure. Students pay too much now. I would like to see the state raise taxes enough to support our colleges so that the everyone who can qualify can attend. Tuition should be tied to the minimum wage. Work the summer at minimum wage and you can attend college. I contribute twice as much (at least) to the Emerald scholars as I give to athletics. That program is for kids who come from households making under 40k. I would like for them to have the same opportunity that I had. I have spoken to Mary Crownover about lowering tuition. She didn't want to talk about it. The plan for change here seems to be whine, whine, whine, and on every thread, no matter the subject. I haven't heard anything about someone stepping up except "somebody else".
  17. Whine, whine, whine. Jesus could turn water to wine and you guys can turn any thread to whine. Maybe I should switch my allegiance to UT or UTA. Seems that NT fans are just a bunch of whiners. And everyone loves a whiner. Whining will lose you a spouse, your friends and on-line friends. I hope you guys have a dog.
  18. I think you bought ticket selling hype about "best team in NT history". The person who came up with that reminds me of the butterfly story. A butterfly is sitting on a tree and says "everyone says it's going to get cold. Well, I've been here my whole life and it has never been cold". I guarantee you the person who came up with that never saw the 69-70 team or the 75-76 or 76-77 teams. I don't think we had a single player from last year who could have started on the 75-76 team, which was briefly ranked in the top 20. When the statement was published I thought it was insulting to those teams, but for the butterfly he had no reference but maybe the last 15 years. I could agree with that, a possibility. I thought the season hinged on Overlander because we had no shooters. When did you ever see Tony make a move and say "Wow". His shot was a dunk. The guy from Lehigh outplayed him pitifully, so did Neighbors from UALR. Sometimes I think advertising can sell everything. If you would told anyone in 1970 that one of the top selling items in a grocery store in 2013 would be water, you would have got a reply of "crazy". You probably buy a lot of water. And I don't think the program is destroyed. There will be games next year and I will attend.
  19. I have only been coming to the site since about Sept. - Oct. and I don't think I have seen 1 positive post from UNTnegative, even the football threads. Could we vote this guy off the island? Improve by subtracting a negative yields a positive. I wish he would become a UT or UTA fan. I'll bet he kicks his dog. Now we can expect the negative blast that turns this thread negative like every other one on the site.
  20. If you are a bastard, you and your next 10 generations can't go to heaven. It is in the bible. Look it up. Just plain silly. Religion is a joke, all of them.
  21. A question for the older folks here: Didn't some students picket the admin building demanding Charlie Johnson be fired in about 1965? He resigned and I heard that at the time. I didn't see it and didn't talk to anyone who did. I heard that a bunch of frats got it together. We hired Spika and he had some very rough years before putting together our most talented team ever. Three hall of famers, two played pro for several years. Whitaker, Hamilton (ABA), and Winfield (NBA). I am not advocating this at all. I am pretty sure Johnson had no buyout clause.
  22. One thing I have noticed, and I am sure everyone who attends notices also, is that there is often more local kids there for some promotion than NT students. That inflates attendance, which I am sure is the purpose of the promotion. And we schedule a lot of home games during the holidays, which loses what few students do come. Getting our students there will help recruiting in football and basketball, get us a better team, sell more tickets. The NT students are the key to our success. In the old pit, it seemed like the entire crowd was students.
  23. I live less than a mile from the practice field. I don't go to scrimmages. Season ticket holder. Scrimmages are boring.
