You're right. ESPN had him classified as a point guard but they don't classify players' positions based on what colleges are recruiting them as. A lot of times it's more for them to say "we have a 6'3" guy rated this high, with an early departure potential grade because he's a point guard." True for Taylor, as he was not recruited as a point. Maybe a guy who could play point or bring the ball up the court, but not a true point.I trust what I see and he is not a 1. If you put him at the 1 you'd limit his scoring more. He'd turn it over more forcing things. To out of control to be a one. Better as your 2 or 3 where he can focus on scoring
That being said I would like to see him at point, not for long stretches but a times to just put the ball in his hands and let him make things happen. But yes, he's a 2 and that's where the majority if his minutes should be at.

It is illegal if they are boosters. Other than that, no.UTSA fans are trying to talk Xavier in to coming there on Twitter. Isn't that a violation?

MTSU beat UAB 89-84 in Murfreesboro. Two pretty good teams.
-
Wow. Unless we turn this around big time we'll have some problems winning against anyone in this conference.
-
Then we may have to forfeit that game against Wayland Baptist. But one thing that I just remembered is that while we counted the game as a win, they did not count it as a loss. It was an unrecorded game if I remember correctly.Today is that day, and 20.9.8.1 is that bylaw. It reads: "An institution may schedule and play not more than four basketball games, including any contest (e.g., scrimmage, exhibition), in an academic year against institutions that are not members of Division I."
In other words, there are limits to the number of non-D1 teams you can play. Nonconference opponents dont supply data to the Ratings Percentage Index, and so (among other reasons) you cant spend your entire nonconference season scheduling opponents that dont provide data to the RPI. Theres a limit, and teams abide by it.

If I had a nickel for everytime someone asked him if he was doing a bit, I'd buy out Benny's contract. So, Andrew, can we count this one with BYU as a "disappointing" loss or is there a moralvictory somewhere buried in there?
Seriously, you're doing a bit, right?

If we can't pull out a road win on Thursday against a not-that-good Marshall team then we will come back to Denton 9-9 and having to face 2 pretty solid teams in UAB and MUTS.
-
Two road games coming up then MUTS and UAB at home. Ruh roh raggyI was gonna hold off for when we dipped below .500 on the season. Which, may be soon looking at the schedule.

2 of their big 3 are having a good game. Usually a bad sign for the opposing team (us). The third is only 1/8 from the field but is still 8/10 from the line.

Off topic, but have you seen this?Need the students to chant "tj taylor" anytime he's on the bench.

Interesting stat: each team has a total of just 2 assists at halftime. Both of ours belong to TJ Taylor. Gonna predict that the winner of this game is the team that finishes with more assists.
-
Wow we needed that run. Looking forward in our schedule, this game looks like a must win. Come out this half like we finished the last!
-
They have a big 3 of Dabney, Stark, and Hook. All guards, all 15+ points/game. Usually if you can keep 2 of a team's big 3 in check you can handle them. Let's hope we do just that.
Also, need a big game from the big guys today.

It wouldn't be surprising at all, but that has no bearing on how many we can sign. We'd be able to sign at least 26 guys this class, not including the walkons that we put on scholarship that count towards this class. We can only sign 25 per class, assuming that we signed 25 the year before (which we did, counting the walkons that we put on scholarship in the class).BillySee58, I would wonder if UNT is expecting any more attrition due to grades, quitting or transferring?
-
Yes, that's what it would be and that's all we'd need, as long as he's playing the 4. Especially in our high-low game. My point was you can't just turn him into a guy who can knock down outside shots or handle the ball with consistency to be a 3. But yes, a consistent threat at the elbow from Combs would be just great.Just extending to the elbow would help

Okay, but I wouldn't expect him to be able to make 3-point shots, or be allowed to take them for that matter. Maybe be able to make more 12-15 footers, not 3s.I am not saying turn him into a sharp shooter but the coaching staff needs to develops his outside game just a little hit so he can be a dual threat.
If you want to run something like the flex or the 4-1 motion which requires a big to be agile and have a little bit of a outside game. Could give us a lot of options.

Cooley confirmed that Combs is not a small forward. If you watch any of his highlights you can see all of his points come inside and he doesn't handle the ball much.
I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but you can't turn a senior in high school into a wing player if he isn't already. You can increase Combs' range, but you aren't going to turn him into a sharpshooter from deep. You can work on his ball handling but he isn't going to be a guy you want bringing the ball up a lot or leading a fast break. Roger tried to turn himself into more of a perimeter player but the truth was he was a post. Combs should just be left at the 4 IMO. He can contribute immediately there and we have the guards to play three at a time, plus a guy like Wesley who does have small-forward skills.
Either way Combs is a great addition.

The rule about bringing in extra players is that you can bring in as many in excess of 25 as you were under 25 the year before. As long as you bring at at least the excess number at mid-term. For example, if you sign 22 one year (3 under 25) you can sign 28 (3 over 25) the next year as long at least 3 of those signees enroll in the spring.i thought there was a rule that you could bring in players to fill in the extra scholarships from kids who left as long as some are early enrolees like greer, akii, and means... wouldnt that allow us to get to 28 this year? i may be confusing myself more on this stuff... i just hope we have spaces left because we could have quite a few quality guys fall in our laps towards the end of this recruiting cycle.
That doesn't work for us because we signed 25 last year if you count the walkons we put on scholarship, so we get just 25 this year.
-
The numbers he's putting up are ridiculous! Especially when you consider that he is only 6'7" and doesn't shoot 3-pointers. He must have really good ups and skill set, because it's not like he's a 7 foot or even 6'10" high school kid outrebounding and scoring over 6'5" posts. 31 rebounds is ridiculous regardless of competition.Combs had 33 points & 31 rebounds tonight ... Wow

I think we'll be winning by >8 with 5 minutes left in the game. But do we win by >8?I see one site has us as a 8 point favorite. I think we win, but that's a lot of points to give. I was thinking it would have been around 2.5-4.5
-
Yes, you get 25 a year. 3 of our scholarships for this class have been taken up by giving scholarships to walkons who have played less than 2 seasons on the team as a walkon (Buyers,Kirby, Macek,). Vito is the one who has said we have 2 more spots. I trust him, but I'm not sure where the 25th scholarship has gone to (21 signees and 3 walkons given scholarships).idk know this for sure, but it is starting to look like Garrett Davis isnt really a UNT commit either... i know he verbally committed a while back but he is a guy that seems like he would jump ship at the first sight of a p5 scholarship and im pretty sure some schools have shown interest in him. that being said, there may be another scholarship open... also, correctme if im wrong, but cant we bring in 25 scholarship players each new year? so wouldnt there be room for 4 more scholarships with the 16 high school and the 5 guys already on campus?

That's not what's in doubt. SFA's exhibition game doesn't count towards their overall record either, but apparently it counts towards the number of non-D1 teams that they've played this year. Which counts towards the max of 4 non-D1 teams that a team can play a year. Our 9-6 record does not include the exhibition games. Check schedule at http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/ntex-m-baskbl-sched.html
If exhibition games count against that total (not the overall record), like it did for SFA, then we have played 5 non-D1 teams which apparently would mean we would have to forfeit a game.

Don't know the story other than he wasn't playing. That leaves Mark Lewis and Lajaylin Smith as the only Louisiana guys left on our roster. I wish Jamarcus the best of luck.Jarvis is gone? Another La. failure. Sorry to see him go and I wish him well. What's the story there?

Drama. RT @EricBaileyTW Baker Mayfield's request to be released to Oklahoma was denied during a Friday appeals hearing at Texas Tech.

But yeah, him being our James Harden could be a good role for him. He sees the floor pretty well even if he isn't a true point guard. He definitely needs the ball in his hands. We can't be going multiple offenses stretches at a time without getting him the ball when he's in. Especially with the way Benford subs guys out, we need to make the most of TJ when he's in.
