  1. I get it, but it's still a true freshman QB with 3 weeks of practice at the FBS level winning the #2 spot and then coming into a game against FBS competition and going 5 for 6, with the 6th pass being a drop.

Taking that step that quickly and being that successful is pretty impressive, and why he is my odds on favorite to win the competition in Spring ball. Not the fall. Spring.

I agree. Anyone who saw it thought it was impressive. Because it was. We definitely got a steal whether he is the starter next year or not. Definitely a D1 qb.
  2. I think DW will be our starter. I think his injury seemed to coincide with DT playing good football and letting the staff know that this is his team. Seems like he is the most athletic and showed the most promise to the coaching staff during the offseason. I think another spring/summer camp and DW will be molded in to a fine starter.

I'm not sure why people think Berglund can win the job. He could not beat out Mini Mac, DT or DW for snaps. Not sure what a year difference will make. I don't know what happened with that situation, but I don't expect to see Berglund start.

I believe, and hope, Means is red shirted.

As far as Greer, I think he chose to come here thinking he would be a starting QB and I think he will grind hard for the job. I hope he wins the second string job.

The thinking behind Berglund having a shot is because he was not out-quarterbacked as much as he was out-footballed. It wasn't like the other guys were making throws that he could not, or that he was overwhelmed by the speed of a D1 defense. He was just trying to run way too much and trying to play catch-up after getting a late start because of injury. If he plays within the offense and runs the plays that are called then he has a great chance. But DW is the favorite
  3. Understood on wanting to hold off but the explosiveness and plays made in the biggest stage he could play on (state championship game) he dominated the Katy O-line all game long. He's probably not the first or last D1 player who the Allen Tackle will dominate that kid is salty as can be. That being said I'll stick with my defensive game changer statement until proven otherwise. I think he has the talent to be that for UNT. Only time will tell, Billy, when do Freshman get to report? July?

Lol on calling the kid salty, as he is. But yes, that was a good Katy line he dominated, at least for the high school level. I hope X is a game changer. I also hope he helps set the edge on the run game if we get him. We have some solid pass-rushing ends coming back (Mason, Polk, Q Brown) but we could really use Washington coming in 240+ and helping against the run.

    Yes, they report in July.

  4. haha. Well I suspect you don't watch much football or have any idea how to evaluate TALENT. The kid is a freak. If he was 6'3 he would be getting offers from dang near every P5 school. He could play for those schools now but they won't or haven't taken a chance on him yet. He would change our defense in a hurry if he signed.

Washington is at the top of my wish list and he would headline the class for me along with Tee Goree and Fonzale Davis, but I watched him play one game live and he got worked all game against Allen by their junior, now rising senior, left tackle Bobby Evans who is a 4-star and already committed to Oklahoma. The questions about his height are not completely bogus.

That being said, I really hope we get him and I think he would be in the rotation from day 1 here. He could become a starter by conference play with some seasoning. I'd just personally hold off on calling him a defense changer until I see him go against 6'5"+ college tackles consistently.

  5. Lots of speculation/fantasizing about QB's that will throw one long ball after another because they have cannon arms etc.etc. I seem to remember an interview with Mac toward the end of the season where he was expressing (in his best maniacal Robert Loggia/Jim Wacker voice) his philosophy/preference about offense ....."run the rock, run the rock".

My guess is that the named starter (if there is one) after the spring game will be the guy who can run the offense with as few mistakes as possible (no ints or fumbles...Mac hates that more than anything) and can complete most of his mid-to-short distance passes. Another poster on this board (I think it was BS58) has quoted Coach Mac as saying that Berglund spent too much time doing that "Johnny Manziel crap" during spring. An assessment BTW that I share whilst watching unscripted spring practices.

So the winner of the QB contest will be the QB that is the best bus driver. Right now that would be McNulty. If Berglund has finally gotten the message, then I would put him at second.

No, it wasn't me who posted that but a couple guys on here both said they both talked to different players and heard nearly the same thing. That's why I think it could be Brock.

The problem is not that the game is too fast for him, or he's inaccurate, or off the field stuff. It seems like he just is trying to be on sportscenter too hard and if he can just make the reads, sit in the pocket, and command the offense he should win the job.

  6. Hard to disagree with that assessment. "Flashy" is not exactly how I would term Macs offensive philosophy. Btw, since most chose DW in this poll, what are his weaknesses? I've heard a lot about his strengths, but nothing negative to account for his having offers only from Montana and NT. Considering that he played HS ball only a few miles from some of the biggest programs in the country, I just have to wonder why the lack of interest? Just one of those guys who slipped through the cracks? TIA.

I would say he's one of those guys who slipped through the cracks, but the knocks on him are that he's skinny which is a dangerous proposition with a running qb, and if you look at his high school stats he didn't reach the 60% completion percentage mark in high school.

As just a general rule most evaluators and coaches want to see the qb hit 60% completion percentage or higher before they advance to the next level (i.e. high school to college, college to NFL). However, even though it was in mop up duty, Dajon looked pretty darn accurate against Idaho going 5-6 with the lone incompletion being a drop.

  7. Yeah accuracy could be a ?, but arm strength, speed, and agility is not. A good O coordinator, and I think Coach C is a good offensive coordinator can hide his flaws with baby steps. Roll out high/low option, throwbacks, tunnel/bubble/HB screens, etc. it all doesn't have to be dig routes thrown into zone.

I think that helped a lot with DT at times. Kept it simple and the o-line gave him plenty of time. He just had trouble throwing downfield. I want to see what this offense can do with a guy who can hit some downfield passes in addition to the shorter stuff and run the ball a little.
  8. Well his high school tape shows me the arm strength and accuracy I need to see. His 40 time is very nice, but unlike DT he has good agility to match good speed. With the offensive cast around him it will only make him shine more. Put Greer in there and it's the 2013 offense. Throw in some elusiveness at the QB position it brings an entire new element to the offense. It will also force defenses to game plan for it and defenders will have eyes on him affording other players to shine. 2400 yards passing and 500 yards rushing is a very doable statistical year for DW next fall. That's 200 yards passing and 50 rushing a game.

I really like DW's game, but it's hard to tell accuracy from high school tape. All the passes are complete in a highlight tape.

  9. I agree Brock or Dajon would allow UNT to really open up the offense with more QB runs. Greer is a big armed QB who could stretch the field. To me it comes down to Greer and Dajon. Dajon brings more to the table and will win the job

Greer is basically DT 2.0. Playing against him in high school his problem was accuracy. His completion percentage was under 50% against the playoff teams and just over 50 overall. He looked a lot improved in his JUCO tape and stats. He does have the big arm and the height. Looks like Mac's style of qb.

  10. With the current team yes. Losing so much on defense and having no experience at the QB position leaves lots of things that have to go 100% right for the upset to happen.

Stopping the run and finding any way to move the ball on offense are huge obstacles on 08/30.

But I'll be there to watch, and it will be fun.

I agree. I think our defense will be good enough. The key is our passing game. I like the short routes we run, and if our new qb can hit those like DT did against UNLV and other games like K-State last year then we can put up points.

I just believe in the system we have in place and the competition we have at all positions.

  11. If we build on what we did this year, we are going to key on the run and see if the UT qb can beat us. We have done fairly well stoping the run. Good qbs and a good passing attack has caused problems. If heard is the starter, we would have a decent shot at the upset because it will take some time for him to get the passing down. Running qbs caused us some trouble too though.

Exactly. Until they prove they can throw the ball I like our chances to make it a game.
