  1. Here's the all-district team for 7-5A.

    http://texashsfootball.com/2014/01/09/2013-all-district-7-5a-team/

Xavier Washington was co-defensive MVP along with junior d-lineman and booger clone Bryce English, who should totally join the d-line commit exodus at Texas and come to UNT ;). Brandon Garner, Shaq Jackson (2nd year in a row), Chris Orr, and Nick Orr were all voted to the 1st team. Congrats to all those guys!

It's one of the deepest and most talented districts in the state, but one thing you'll probably notice is that the teams are a little out of hand. 10 linebackers on the 1st-team. 10! 4 players were 2nd-team all district qbs. Either way, don't let that take away from the season a lot of these kids had.

  2. Here's my immediate concern. He's the D-line coach and that is the glaring hole in this year's recruiting class. Considering that Texas lost THREE defensive linemen commitments when their D-line coach left it makes me a bit nervous.

I too hope it doesn't hurt our efforts at getting Xavier Washington. However, our two commits from DeSoto don't list any other offers right now and you'd like to think we can beat out Texas State if we really want Tillman Johnson, the other d-end we're after.
  3. Let the tape be the judge. It should always be the judge of any unofficial measurables IMO. He'll have a chance to start immediately, and if he continues to improve at the rate that he has been then we will really have something special on our hands.

Another thing to note; it was posted on this board by bigdanteague that Goree is young enough to still be a junior in high school. He will still be 17 when he starts fall camp so he may still have some growing left height wise and definitely bulk wise. Can you imagine if he put up those stats as a junior, like he could be?

  4. ESPN has Adams as our highest rated WR in this class. If that is true, this WR class has the opportunity to be legendary considering the numbers Goree, Davis and Rutherford put up this year.

They never got around to rating Goree or Rutherford and they won't either, because they didn't commit to a P5 school. But you know how that works. Goree is a 3-star on rivals, 247, and scout though.

Yes, the recruiting class is downright filthy at receiver. Adams should be very good and if for some reason receiver doesn't work out I think he has the fluidity to be a very good defensive back. Will be fun to watch all these young guys compete at receive next year.

  5. To marcoatf and apexmom, welcome to the board! Understand that Xavier is the player that we want more than anyone else left.

The general opinion on this board is that if we get him he will headline our class along with guys like Fonzale Davis (south oak cliff) and Tee Goree (another state champ from Carthage). I share that opinion as well. I know it's hard not to take non-positive comments personally, but there is a lot of praise for him on this board and we want him to come here very badly.

If he picks us you will see great jubilation on this board, as much as we've had for any one player committing, and if he picks some one else there will be a lot of disappointment because he is basically our number 1 target at this point.

Congrats on all the offers and a great season. Pick UNT :)

  6. The way I read Rick's post, it sounds like they could reassign a coach whether he wants to do it or not. It doesn't require his approval to "step down".

I am not sure why you would think football and basketball would be different in regards to this sort of speculation.

I've never seen this in my time as a college sports fan. I wasn't around to see what Rick is explaining, and I certainly don't know whether or not it can be done to Benford.

I've never read Benford's contract, but I'd imagine he cannot be reassigned to another position. He signed a contract to become our head basketball coach, and we agreed upon a deal to make him our head coach for the next 5 years for ~350K/year.
  7. Why not in this particular instance? What do you know? Or is this only your opinion?

What happened with Simon has happened in football, but I can't say I've ever heard of it happening in basketball. Outside of coaches retiring and taking a spot in the AD. Someone give me examples, not because I doubt it but because I don't know of any examples or how they worked out.

Opinion, but look at Benford's salary. He's not stepping down. Not to mention the fact that the guy seems pretty prideful and this is his first coaching job. If he steps down he will be even more likely to never get a coaching position. His only chance is to ride this thing out as long as he can and try to show that he can be a head coach.

If Benford doesn't work out and this season continues to spiral out of control, then we need a regime change. Shuffling the guys around in house would solve very little.

  8. Again.... we do not need to buy him out. As we did with Simon, we need to re-assign him and promote his next in line. He will either resign or leave on his own when his next coaching opportunity comes along, and move on.

We have done this before. Unless there is something weird in his contract we don't know of, then there shouldn't be any reason it can't happen again.

    Rick

    1. That's not how it works

    2. We need a regime change. Promoting an assistant to head coach and leaving Benford as an assistant would change nothing. Benford is not improving our situation that he put us in, and neither is his staff.

    3. The "weird" thing in his contract is that we'd have to buy him out to relieve him of his head coaching duties. The only way he won't be our head coach is if we fire him and buy his contract out or he accepts a coaching position somewhere else. No college would pay him anywhere close to what he is getting here, nor will another college give him an opportunity to be their head coach, and he surely would not step down willingly. Especially not to become an assistant here.

    4. Lol at thinking about the next college coaching opportunity he will get.

Edit: not meant as a slight at you Rick, my point was just to not expect that to be the way this problem is solved.

  9. I seriously doubt that we pulled the scholarship offer. This was likelier to have been a grayshirt offer and the kid found an FCS school that will offer him a scholarship immediately and probably an opportunity for a lot of playing time early in his career there.

Although I hate to ever lose any of our commitments, it sometimes is for the best for all involved. The kid may have pro football asperations and couldn't risk going somewhere that he may be burried on the depth chart for his first couple of seasons. The league has very little interest in players that are not the ideal height, weight, and speed unless they have proven themselves as multi-season starters.

Davis is a 3-star on 247, with an 84 grade (almost halfway to a 4-star) and a 3-star composite grade (an average grade between his ratings on all the major recruiting websites ESPN, rivals, scout, and 247).

Jones and Davis also have much better offer lists and I personally prefer their games. They're also cornerbacks where as Betts is a safety. Although Davis has the versatility to play either.

  10. Everyone on this team is better then last year (minus CJ who I honestly believe has something up right now).

How do people who mix up the word "then" and "than" have jobs? See how easy that is?

You're taking these arguments too personal. The Walton thing was a much-needed joke to take away some of the stress of the dumpster fire that was last season.

You can dissect each game and ask "how can we get better," but it's becoming more apparent each game that we aren't and those improvements are not coming as long as Benford is here. They're actually just getting worse. That's coming from a guy who really gave him a chance. He still has time to change my mind, but he really hasn't done anything to earn that.

  11. With the kind of speed I understand White has I don't think Coach McCarney would ever turn down. Good to great team speed is what will separate North Texas from all those schools we say we don't want to be associated with. It sure did for Boise State.

Not comparing this recruiting story with White, but North Texas is the school that once turned down Spud Webb for a basketball scholarship back in the day. Yes, I know.....quite unbelievable and that happening during our much too long "Totally Brain Dead & W/O A Clue About College Varsity Sports" era in Denton.

I don't know, I disagree. I don't think White has the gamebreaking speed that some on here think he does. He's a lot more impressive when it comes to elusiveness than pure top end speed. I really think Ivery is faster.

Also, I really hope we keep Garrett Davis. He would be a really good fit in our defense and I think he'd be a really good cornerback on the far side of the field and Andrew Jones (our other cornerback) would be a really good short side of the field cornerback. Davis has the athleticism, size, and strength to play either really.
