  1. Who is filling which spot?

    Perry - Safeties, Hicks - CB's?

Perry, coming from the NFL is awesome. Hopefully he can learn the recruiting game quickly.

Hicks, coming from Concordia University (and not the one in TX)... Not sure what he brings to the table other than being in the NFL, and knowing coach McCarney. This hire hints that we're not planning on increasing the salary for Gaines'/Walters'/Hicks' spot. Hopefully he's ready for D-1 coaching/recruiting. I think he's more of a question mark.

I don't know how you assume no increase in salaries. With Perry I was thinking there had to be an increase coming from the NFL. Both from the NFL looks like a big upgrade to me. Congrats to the coaches. GMG

  2. I'm right there with you. Don't get me wrong...being competitive now, and staying competitive requires us to increase the budget to keep up with the market. I think the past 5 years is evidence that we will do just that.

I was very surprised that a defensive backs coach and recruiting co ordinator only made $63,000. They better all get raises and coach Wintrich needs a big bump!

  3. If I start dating a girl that weighs 400 lbs and she then loses weight down to 350 lbs, she is slimmer than she was before I started dating her but damn, she has a long way to go. Kinda like our athletic budget, when you have spent so little towards athletics in the past, you have to increase it substantially just to get to par.

Good point! You don't go from 400 to 150lbs overnight! But she is better at 200 than she was at 400. When she hits 150 she is dumping you!! So you better start looking for an another 400lb girlfriend !!!

  4. I guess there is never going to be enough money or the right way to spend it for many of us. For someone to say we have not been committed to better athletics is BULL!!

Think where we were 5 years ago! There has been a dramatic turnaround. Oh and the firing of the USM football coach after a year has really worked out well for the USM football team!

  5. Yep. Speed helps equalize. The offense knows what's going to happen on each play. The defense doesn't. Speed helps negate that advantage.

Abbe and Orr will be hard to replace. The Seahawks tackles did not look that big to me and they would cover sideline to sideline with their speed. I would like to see the guys around 275 if lighter move to end or bring in on passing downs.

  6. I am not an expert on recruiting ,but I really enjoy following and hearing all the opinions! I always thought the barometer of how we did would be based on who else had offered and what decision the kid made. I believe we should not lose kids to Tulsa, LA la, ASU, La Tech, CSU, and Wyoming. We did this year, we will every year and I need to accept it.

A Tulsa signee that has really stood out to me is a MLB from Memphis named Petera Wilson. He had offers from almost every college football power program and choose Tulsa. Yes Alabama, USC, Ohio St and on and on lost him.

I am so glad I do not make a living based off a decision of 17&18 kids! GMG

  7. I was just saying. You can't use a neutral site FCS championship game to somehow make our turnout at the HOD bowl more impressive. It was indeed impressive, but it's not comparable when we have well over 100,000 alumni living within 45 minutes of the cotton bowl.

    Edit: and 36,000 students!

Agree, maybe half would show up for a playoff game or a National Championship. FCS does it and the P5 will do it because it makes big bucks! UNT VS Boise State in the G5 National Championship game! I would b there!

  8. To think that the NCAA and the P5 have all of college sports best interest is a JOKE!

It is time for the Mid Majors to get together and form a coalition. Playoffs is were the money is. Take C-USA, MWC,MAC and the American Conf. and set up a playoff system. With the outcome being a national champion.

No way can we be dependent upon the P5.

  9. Thoughts:

    1. We were favored by 9.

    2. Where in the hell is Chris Jones? It's almost like he's regressed since freshman year.

    3. TJ Taylor was clearly our best player. I'd like to see him play more.

    4. At least we made it over 50% in free throw shooting.

    5. I'm getting tired of us passing the ball around for 20 seconds and then driving with 10 seconds left.

    6. How many easy layups are we going to miss?

Great points and I do think CJ has fallen since his freshman year. He looks really out of shape, but the decision making has been suspect.

  10. Also someone get CJ in the gym! He has gained almost 20 pounds in a year it looked like according to the stat sheet. I think he will never be the same after his injury. He sin hesitant, out of shape, and makes poor decisions. I feel bad for him because he had a ton of potential! I wish I could talk to him in person and see what's up. We also need to sub a bit less.

Vaughans, Taylor, Aniefiok, Voss, and Colman for 7 minutes straight might do wonders.

Agree, our point guard play is terrible!

  11. To me this is the one CLEAR advantage we have over SMU and TCU and many other programs in the state.

UNT is sitting in the middle of the most fertile high school recruiting grounds in the state.

When you dig in and see how many VERY good players here do not get I-A scholarships it is shocking. There are many reasons but the primary one is that so many schools are doing early recruiting and if a kid has an injury early on they fall off of the radar and never get picked back up. Or a kid has a monster senior year and it's too late because many of the programs are filled up.

UNT has a great location, and offers reasonable tuition in comparison to the privates. So a kid can minimize their tuition and living expenses while trying to secure a spot on the team. Have you seen the tuition and cost of living at SMU and TCU lately? I think it's around $50K a year!

McCarney doesn't just give lip service to the walk-on program he has shown a propensity to give walk-ons scholarships throughout his career.

SMU and TCU can sell the dollar value amount of their private education to scholarship recruits and it works very well in the suburban more higher income high school programs. They have both created a bubble in which the players from inner city programs can feel at home. However, the fact is that most of the scholarship players TCU and SMU sign will not fit in or identify with the rest of the undergraduate populations at SMU and TCU. UNT's diversity is a strength that needs to be promoted.

TCU by gaining access to the Big 12 is a tougher nut to crack but SMU and the AAC should provide us with some opportunities to win.

The walkon program at UNT is a big strength and I am very pleased to see Coach Mac embrace it as he has. It allows us to evaluate players on the college field of play as opposed to what they did in high school. It gives hungry, motivated athletes who were overlooked or had an injury/setback a second chance. It pushes the scholarship players to produce. I think it will only get better in future years.

Great viewpoint and I agree. An addition to offers not being made is the size of the players. With coach W doing the conditioning it is a win win!

  13. I posted this at a time when I was looking at some positives.( mainly the talent on the team) Now I really have second thoughts as a courtside season ticket holder! That was total Crap and RV had better been in his face telling Benny exactly that.

A winning record and a win in the tourney I would be ok.

As we know a good recruiter that can't coach eventually becomes a horrible recruiter!
