  1. Listen, coaches talk to each other. I can guarantee that prospective coaches have spoken to Mac. I don't think mac would be vindictive towards UNT but I do believe he would be honest regarding working for RV, recruiting to UNT, etc... There are some coaches that may shy away from the challenge but we don't need those type of coaches. We need a coach who looks at the "challenges" and tells them to kiss his ass and then gets to work in building this program back up, leaves for a P5 in a few years and then we re-load.

BINGO!!! We need a coach that will be hired away in 3-4 years to a better gig, because he has turned around UNT. With higher pay  for the asst.coaches hopefully they get promoted to the head coach. Look at Bowling Green, Boise, Houston have all had a good run with coaches getting hired away!

  2. Let me expound on why I think Fritz oportet nostro proximo raeda

    Willie Fritz

    Pros:

    • Has been a HC at the JUCO, DII, FCS and FBS levels.
    • Has been a very good recruiter at every stop.
    • Winning-est coach in Central Missouri history.
    • Turned around a SHSU program that went 25-28 in the previous 5 years and went 40-15.
    • Took the GSU program, that finished 7-4 in FCS, lead them into a FBS conference and has gone 16-6.
    • Makes 500k at Georgia Southern, could easily increase his salary and have money left over to bring his coordinators.
    • Overall record of 153-68, 40-15 record in FCS, 16-6 in FBS.

    Cons:

    • Might want to stay at GSU until a P5 program comes open.
    • Would make RV look good, possibly killing UNT90.

I seriously can't think of any cons.  He has rebuilt struggling programs at the JUCO, DII, FCS and FBS level.  Has never been one of the rich kids at the P5 program, so he knows what it takes to win here.  He has recruited at every single level.  He has won at every single level.   North Texas would be the most well funded program he has ever been to.  He has found recruits to come to small programs in the P5 heavy states of Texas and Georgia.  He has been at the small program that has to rush for the over looked B12 or SEC recruits.

Maybe he cheats at spades?  Maybe he is the one person who likes honeydew in fruit salad?  Besides him possibly wanting to coach at a P5, please tell me what his shortcomings are.

In short:  Fritz oportet nostro proximo raeda

I like Fritz negatives would be name recognition , age, time away from Texas. For immediate response in recruiting we need current Texas ties, and a recognized name.

  3. I found the following info for our current coaching staff but it's at least a year old.  (link: http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/football/assistant)

According to this database we pay our assistant coaches a total of $1,148,300.  The list looks upside down.  It seems Patrick and Perry should be higher if only for their recruiting ability while I'm not sure what Quartaro for his salary.  I would love to approach Tech's level of assistant coaches salaries which would be a little over $1 million more.

Filtering the list it appears that the average assistant coaches salaries for CUSA in this time frame was $1,006,844 while were third highest.  Assuming not much has changed in the last year or so, going to $2.3 million would be way out in front of the rest of the conference so probably not realistic.  However, increasing it to $1.5 million may be doable and should make us top in the conference.  Hiring the best assistant coaches we can and retaining them would make a huge difference.

The average for the AAC is $1,797,884 though that's only seven schools due to all the privates.  MWC average is $1,367,963.  MAC average is $839,101.  I would prefer to see us shoot for the middle of the next level up which is the AAC in terms of salaies.  $1.5 million would get us close.

Disclaimer:  Increased salaries would be terrific but no guarantee of success.  We still need to hire the right guys.  (UNT90 ... I've left you one hanging over the plate.)

Edit:  for those who don't click on the link, The number columns are as follows:  School Pay, Other Pay, Total Pay (for that coach), Max Bonus, Staff Pay Total.

You might want to also look at the number of coaches. A few recruiting co ord and  high school relationship manager type position? Have seen this position with a number of schools!

  4. “I just love the energy he brings,” running back DeAndre Washington said. “Sometimes we don’t always have the best practices, but the one thing we can count on is coach Jinks keeping us amped up on the sidelines.”

Washington said he knew of Steele’s powerhouse reputation, but didn’t realize Jinks’ association with the Knights until he was hired by Tech.

“I see how he was able to win at Cibolo Steele,” Washington said, “because he’s a hard-working dude, he’s dedicated and he loves his job. I’m glad to have him.”

Now that he’s a college coach, Jinks says he’s wanting to do well not only for himself and Tech, but for those he represents — Texas high school coaches. Jinks has been the lead recruiter for about one-third of the players committed to Tech for next February’s class, something he attributes to his relationships with high school coaches.

“The Texas high school football coaches have been an unbelievable resource,” he said. “There’s a lot of guys out there in the state of Texas that want to see Mike Jinks be successful, because I’m one of them.

“All those high school guys want to be the next one, so anything you can do, the more guys like myself that go off and are able to have some success, the more doors can be opened.”

  5. Tech spends an additional $2.3 million on salaries for nine assistant coaches, including an annual salary of $550,000 for defensive coordinator David Gibbs; $260,000 for offensive coordinator/inside receivers coach Eric Morris; $260,000 for co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Mike Smith; $240,000 for associate head coach/running backs coach Mike Jinks; $235,000 for outside linebackers coach Trey Haverty; $210,00 for cornerbacks coach Kevin Curtis; $210,000 for offensive line coach Lee Hays; $200,000 for linebackers coach Zac Spavital; and $180,000 for special teams/wide receivers coach Darrin Chiaverini.

I like how the defensive co ord makes double the other assistants! Oh yea it is TECH!

  6. Fleck has taken a Western Michigan program and has turned it around quickly. What was really a surprise to me was his recruiting classes. Number one in the Mac since he started and even ranked above Nebraska and Oregon at times and stealing recruits away from schools like Michigan State! This is a high energy guy that has been a W/R coach at the college and pro level.

    How? Fleck Forbes  Article

    1. Great teams change on a daily basis.

    2. Recruiting requires a Great first impression.

    3. Develop a culture that shapes leaders.

How important will it be to have a younger HIGH energy guy? Experience, track record, HIGH ENERGY!

  7. I'll bite. We know directly from Chris Riddle (Florida QB Recruit) that Chico hasn't been able to recruit the guys he wants. He's been handcuffed. And i'm not saying he is the perfect candidate.

I don't know who the answer is from North Texas. But honestly, someone who cares about this program, and loves it here. Is passionate about little ol' UNT, and has improved everything he's put his hands on when he's had full control.

    You want wide open offense?

" In 2008 at South Florida, Canales’ offense led the Big East Conference in scoring and finished second in total offense.  He helped his team reach a national ranking as high as No. 2 during the 2007 season and No. 10 during the 2008 season."

    Done.

You want someone with some head coaching experience but is still younger and affordable?

    Done.

He has shown me that he is willing to adapt his game to find success, he can motivate and he wants to be here. He knows everything to know about this program and what it would take and he still wants that kick in the teeth. We actually get in depth answers to questions in interviews and not ra-ra horse shhh...er crap (sorry harry).

He pretty much is your wish list embodied if you give him the benefit of the doubt that he's never had much control here. The only thing we don't know is his recruiting. But the man has been chomping at the bit and he's hungry. He'll get an offer to be a HC somewhere and if it's not here, mark my words. Quote me. Save my post. I think UNT and us here on the boards will regret it. And if i'm wrong i'll eat all the crow you can dish.

    Now all that being said:

    - His contract should be three years

-To get an extension he needs an entrance to a bowl game at least once

    -He needs to fire cosh

I know we are all keyboard coaching experts, but college football hiring isn't as formulaic as you try and make it. It's a crapshoot, there are 1,000,000,000 reasons why it could all go wrong even if we hire the "right" guy. At least we'd be gambling on someone who gives as much of a damn about North Texas as we do.

    (Preparing for downvotes sir!)

Three years in the $500,000 t0 $600,000 range. New OC DC $350.000 to $400,000 range. Bump all assistant coaches salary. Hire a local HS coach that runs the same offense make him QB coach. Good article on Kitna last week. Could be a maybe if he wins a few more games.
