  1. I really wish that we could help the two Texas schools into a stable conference but we don't have that luxury. We're too busy trying to get ourselves in position for an upgrade. Maybe one of them will be selected as our replacement in the Belt.

    I like to think that our administration foresaw that the WAC would soon lose as many as three of its top members back when we were originally courted for membership and that that, more than travel costs, was the motivation for declining WAC membership.

  2. I would not be surprised at all if we backed out of either the game @LSU, or @ Kansas St, especially if our home attendance is doing well. The buyout on our side is likely not very high at all, and could probably be offset by getting a good opponent in to Denton, and selling lots of tickets. 4 SBC games, and 1 against an FCS opponent is not a very good home slate.

    I wouldn't mind seeing us buy out of the LSU game if we can get a good draw on a home game but I'd hate to see us exercise a buyout of the K-State game. They were gracious enough to be our final Fouts Field opponent with a one for one agreement. I wouldn't want to damage future scheduling with them for the sake of six home games. With the amount LSU pays they can always find some cannon fodder.

  3. As long as we are in the SBC we need one "money" game each year. For the next four they are Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Texas. I believe that the two Iowa games would also fall into that category.

    Should we be able to change conferences whereby we could command more revenue from conference games then we might want to talk about rescheduling. Even with our nice new digs it's hard to get a 2 for 1 with a team that draws 80-100K every home game.

  4. I could be wrong but I didn't understand the infatuation with Granger. He wasn't even the principal starter. His stats were not overwhelming as I recall and I believe that he had seven interceptions last year in not much over a hundred throws (but I didn't look it up).

    He may be the answer, I don't know, but I wonder why he wasn't the starter and why there was apparently no offer and/or acceptance.

    The primary starter, Exavier Johnson, is also still looking. He had medium interest in North Texas.

  5. I have been on this board for many years, since 2001. Not once, have I seen anyone post, "Yes, the SBC is the best place for UNT for the rest of history. The SBC is better than CUSA or the MWC for our school." Not once. I have seen idiots say that we should go join the WAC because Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, and Nevada are bigger names than who we play in the Belt. No one argued that point, except that most people recognized that there was a great risk of those programs bolting the WAC to go to the MWC, which, just shockingly, happened.

    Now, the SBC turned about to be a much better deal for UNT than the WAC would have, but no one is saying that the SBC is so good that we will just stay here. I will ask you again what advice you would give to the AD to have gotten that CUSA/MWC invite already or soon? Because it seems that the university and its AD have put into place quite a bit to entice such an invite, but it hasn't gotten here yet. Obviously, you must have the right ideas, though, since you always clamor to get out of the SBC.

    In reality, this is our home for a long time. If that bothers you so much so that you perpetually post about the conference's woefulness, you should just stop following the program. You will be a great UT T-shirt fan--and have lots of fellow douches to keep you company.

    I guess that it depends on your definition of a long time. On the latest Insider with Rick Villareal he revealed that our goal was two to three years more in the SBC.

    We outsiders don't know if that can be met or not but what we do know is that this stadium needs to have large crowds to make the bond payments and we have a much larger investment in a coaching staff and other expenditures. We've been averaging less than 18K for home SBC games but larger to much larger crowds for OOC home games. A better conference would also give us another million or more in NCAA money. We have to try and I'm hoping that the money paid to Chuck Neinas will help us secure something better sooner. Much of it is up to us. If we can almost fill the new stadium for OOC games we stand a very good chance for the next expansion opening or to replace the team that fills the next opening.

  6. It should, didn't realize that game was finalized and set. I thought there was a chance we opened at Alabama as well? or is that game on the 17th?

    Actually that game isn't finalized yet. It will either be Tulsa or a conference opponent. Houston is a home game on the 10th. Alabama is finalized for the 17th and Indiana for the 24th. It appears that Tulsa's hangup is Oklahoma. Tulsa visits OU but the date hasn't be set yet. I'm sure that Tulsa would rather open with us on the 3rd and travel to Oklahoma on the 10th or sometime later rather than have to open with them.

  7. I think the bright kelly green of the current uniforms (and on clothing) really pops in combination with Black, but this is all so subjective. Here's what I'd do if I were making the uniform decisions -

    A green Jersey with white and black accents and a white jersey with green and black accents. Despite the fact that people say we look "High School" (and we don't because of our uniforms) I really don't have anything against the current Jersey -

    ...then have one of each color pant, Green, Black and White with the appropriate accent colors. This way we change up the look a bit and most everyone will be happy with at least one uniform combination. (except those who want no black, no matter what, even though black accents are present in the current official and approved logos and color scheme)

    ...I hated the white helmet when it first came out, but it has grown on me. ..and the official "North Texas" logo doesn't bother me too much, but if we're going to use words on the helmet, I'd rather see us using "Mean Green" instead of "North Texas". The SOW would be my first choice on the helmet however. I'd like a green that matches the bright kelly green (with silver metal flake, not bass boat metallic, but car paint metallic), but would be perfectly happy with the white if we'd add some pearl to the finish or something to make it pop a bit. Pearl with a tick of green flake would make the helmet pop and be VERY unique. (...can you tell I own a custom car shop? Maybe we can ghost in the SOW logo...)

    I always liked the interlocking NT, but it isn't an official UNT logo, and I think we don't need to be introducing ANYTHING new in terms of logo or colors. Play on the theme, but don't change the theme.

    It wasn't chosen by the design committee but it's official with the Letterman's Association and the Alumni Association.

    I'd love to see it (superimposed NT) on the helmet, and if not that use SOW. We already have NORTH TEXAS on the jersey above the number and I hope that we keep that.

    I don't like all green or much, if any, black but could consider black highlighting.

  8. So, I had the opportunity to talk with the parent of a highly recruited DISD football player recently. During that conversation I asked why more Denton kids don't consider UNT. I asked was it that UNT coaches never contact them?

    The guy was very candid. Said that his son was, indeed, contacted by UNT early in the process, and the UNT coach was told basically not to waste their time as UNT would not be in the mix. Why" (in no specific order):

    1) The kid has grown up in Denton and wants to "get away" from home for college;

    2) The recent record of UNT is a factor, as is the lack of TV opportunities offered through the Sun belt;

    ;3) The lack of support the community gives UNT especially the lack of any community involvement/excitement on game days (remember, these kids grow up and Denton and see it week in and week out)

    4) The attitude of UNT grads and alums around town who do not support the program, do not attend games, do not wear UNT gear and who seem to always be more negative than positive toward their own University;

    5)The fact that many of their friends who attend UNT do so only after transferring from another school or who never have UNT on their list of colleges they are thinking of attending;

    6) The opportunity to play for a "higher profile" program and be seen by pro scouts and their friends (remember, lots of these kids think they have the chance to be pro players at this stage in their "careers");

    7) The lack of persistence by UNT coaches once they hear the initial reaction; and

    8) Yes, some kids are simply not contacted by UNT recruiters at all for whatever reason.

    Now, I asked would the coaching change perhaps help. The answer was definitely "yes" IF they start to turn the program around next season and IF the community and alums turn more positive in their support of the program and the university. OK, folks, this coming from a local kid's parent, and a kid who has grown up in Denton.

    Is it all negative? ABSOLUTELY NO! Is there no hope for local recruiting? ABSOLUTELY THERE IS! But, both coaches and fans need to be realistic in their expectations. And, it seems the "attitude" of the local community and the UNT fans and alums needs some work as well. It does seem to matter. The new coaching staff and how it does on the field and around town will help...and, I was told that new stadium will be a BIG factor in recruiting...not only locally in the Denton area, but across the state as well. This guy indicated that "people are noticing" what UNT is doing these days.

    Interesting conversation...yes, it was! BTW...parent asked that both he and his kid's name not be mentioned. I am assuming that meant that several local folks and coaches actually read this board!

    GO MEAN GREEN!

    One and six I can understand. The first part of two is a somewhat valid argument but UNT appears on local TV more than if they went west of here (since there won't be a MWC team in the metroplex soon, the WAC is likely folding their football, and I only see the Pac 10/12 when there's a national game).

    Five doesn't resonate with me as a reason for not attending UNT. Economics may force more and more students to stay home. Also, Texas and A&M are approaching capacity and UNT may be a good alternative, depending on their major. One thing that underfunding athletics allowed North Texas to do was improve academics. We've always been just a little above average but in our effort to become a Tier 1 university academics should rise, drawing a more selective student body. It seems to be coming the first choice for more and more students these days.

    Seven and eight should be corrected and I really believe that it will under Coach Mac.

    Now comes the true but alarming part for me...three and four. Our alumni don't have to be rah,rah all of the time but they owe an allegiance to their alma mater. Even if they have no interest in athletics they should still push for recognition of their university by the city. They can do that by especially patronizing those businesses that support UNT. They could start a "wearing of the green" day as a reminder of support for the city's biggest employer. Participation becomes habit-forming but so does apathy and I suppose that's easier and cheaper. I hate to think that any of our alumni sit around on their hands and don't support good causes. Cities, universities (in fact any institution) dries up without support. I guess that's the MO of today's world and it saddens me.

  9. Why the objection to the band being behind the opposing bench? I've been to games where the band equalled the size of the crowd that remained. They deserve to be in the center of attention. They devote a lot more hours to the football games than other students. Sounds like a win/win situation to me.

  10. I have to laugh at this. I hope I live long enough to see us get "stone-walled" for a BCS bowl berth. That alone would far exceed my wildest dreams for North Texas football. Only 10 teams play in BCS bowls each year and the only way we'd ever be in a position to play in a BCS bowl game would be to go undefeated, with victories over at least one (but probably two) top 10 team(s) and end the regular season ranked in the top 5.

    For now....I'd be ecstatic to finish a season in the top 25.

    I agree with the tenor of your post but the stonewalling I'm referring to is that he might go undefeated and because he didn't play #1 or #2 won't be considered. It's happened to Boise and it will happen to every non-AQ team until the system is changed.

    Maybe I've just read too many excerpts from 'Death to the BCS.'

  11. The one thing I didn't like is that he supports the current BCS system. Booo!

    I really like his other answers, though. He knows how to get people fired up but also seems to know how to not stick his foot in is mouth.

    I think that statement really stuck out. Either he knows something that we don't (like we're on the fast track to the BCS) or he'll come around to the playoff thinking when we are stone-walled toward getting in a BCS bowl.

    I don't know what was expected from the MG nation. If you think that positive plans is "coachspeak" then you won't ever believe.

  12. JERSEYS - I like what we had last year but a little variation wouldn't hurt. But please, none of those goofy numbers like Oregon has that are very difficult to read.

    PANTS - Stripes of some sort and no long shorts.

    HELMET - Green w/SOW. No lettering unless the AD relents and allows the interlocking NT similar to the Alumni Association logo.

    I'm not a big fan of the body of the jersey being one color and the sleeves another. I'd prefer green or white shoes but black would be okay as well. I also wouldn't care for black, copper or blue highlights. Darker green to highlight numbers on away jerseys. I also prefer green pants/white jerseys for away games and the opposite for home games.

    It must be the enthusiasm of the new stadium and coaching staff that made me comment. This thread happens several times a year every year and I've always ignored it in the past.
