  1. Wow. Coach Gaines does not make much money for a supposed "ace recruiter". I hope he does a great job this year with the CBs so that he earns a raise.

I believe that he will. His coaching is probably somewhat of an unknown and he likely did receive a small raise from what he was making at Montana State.

If we have the anticipated success this year and Coach Gaines has played his part then I believe that he gets the first/largest raise. Raises make you feel as if you are improving your job performance.

Look on the bright side. It got him out of Montana to his adopted state where there appears to be a ton of upside in his situation.

  2. 1. This article is derogatory to North Texas. It says that even North Texas turned them down. It also didn't mention that this had been ongoing for several years.

    2. Nowhere is there any implication that the MWC is about to offer SJSU membership in the Mountain West. It is a story spun from one meeting with the MWC in which nothing was offered or promised.

    3. San Jose State would have to leave the WAC before there is a chance that someone might need to get the lights.

    4. It's the San Jose Mercury-News for Pete's sake. They have been notorious for starting rumors with little or no fact. They're yellow journalism at its best.

  3. I certainly don't mind waiting until Feb. 1st but even if one or more posted inside information or lucky guesses, how would we know which one is correct? There are at least four teams involved positively and that many or more negatively. They can't all be right. Besides, anything done to this point since Hawaii is strictly unofficial until the conference meets next week.

It ain't official 'til it's official.

  4. It's especially unfortunate for us as we are just beginning our ascent from the bottom-feeders of the FBS.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Our federal government is in such deep caca that we are in serious danger of no longer being the universal currency. When our money is no longer accepted because of our huge debt it will create either runaway inflation or a deep depression, depending on how we choose to deal with it.

Either will cause a drop in student enrollment because the money just won't be there for the student loans.

Moreover, federal government spending usually forces the states to pay for it so that they have to cut their own expenditures to pay for federal demands. One of the easiest ways to do that is to cut college-level spending.

I appreciate that Lane Rawlins accepted the permanent presidency of UNT knowing that funding was going to be cut and our need to cover increasing expenditures for research and athletics.

But, it could be worse. Next year tuition, books, room and board at SMU will be a whopping $52,000.

  5. Second.

I think this signing gives the staff the luxury of moving players back to where they can be most beneficial...namely Daniel Prior. I'd imagine Power slides in as the starter immediately...Olawale is a talent, but perhaps a bit under-sized to be a hand on the ground TE, but could find plenty of time in a sort of Dallas Clark-esque role. Greg Brown back healthy, continued development from Drew Miller and perhaps the arrival of Austin Fitzpatrick would give 5 good options for 2 similar, not-every-down positions. More than enough to re-work Prior back into the LB mix

I'm thinking that Drew Miller is another that might do better at linebacker. That's his preferred position and he played it well in the Oil Bowl.

A question is that we know that Power can play TE but can he also play at the U-Back/H-Back? Or does a smaller TE play that position?

  6. I think im blaming JJ on this one, you cant put your best shooter on the bench because hes in the dog house. Our bench is weak as is butslightly improving. I can understand doing this for one game but now were on two, really?? I know its still early in conference and last year we won our final 10 or so

Your best shooter just scored 25 off the bench but I don't know if it improved his defense. This team is too poor defensively and Josh White had a horrible off-night. This team does not appear to be the equal of last year's team. However, the rest of the league is rather weak and I still feel that we can win the tournament.

  7. Well I think you could argue that SMU wants to get the attendance boost and local rivalry of UNT without giving up the conference advantage of being in CUSA.

Then bring on TCU. They don't have to worry about a conference advantage and we would no doubt draw more than Tennessee Tech, SFA, etc. Hell, I'd play them in a Tom Thumb (Safeway) parking lot.

  8. I'm not too sure how many we want to hear about. I would imagine that there is perhaps an equal amount coming in next week for the football banquet. That's usually some of the higher profile recruits if history holds.

We know the ones that have indicated an interest in North Texas but there could be a few that are highly rated with no previous interest shown (at least as far as Rivals, Scout and ESPN are concerned) that will be here in the next two weeks. Those might wait until they find that there are no scholarships left from their non-AQ BCS choices.

This staff looks to be excellent recruiters but we all know that the uncommited was a pretty sparse list by the time the staff was in place. With more success this year we should do a lot better next year.

  9. I say we stay in the belt. This conference is growing and starting to earn respect, in a few years I think people will be wanting to move to the Sunbelt!

I'm not sure that we've had a Top 50 team, much less a Top 25. The conference schedule is not conducive to have top teams and our attendance won't get many home and home games that we can win. That, and most teams don't have the budget to get a first class coaching staff. There is not enough payout from the NCAA for much improvement. They would have to hit it lucky. The Belt and the MAC will be bottom feeders for longer than I have left on this earth.

  10. I have to believe that if UTEP left CUSA that we would be the replacement pick over Louisiana Tech. I know SMU would be vehemently against it, but common sense should overrule them...I would expect more competition from Troy or MTSU.

I don't believe that UTEP would ever leave CUSA without another Texas team going with them. At least that's what their fans say; I don't know about their administration.

One other thing...if SMU was so vehemently against our joining the same conference then why would they schedule six games with us beginning in 2014? Again, their fans might be against it but who can speak for their administration? Also, I'm not so sure that Tulsa would vote against us and maybe not even Rice.

  11. why would HOUSTON even consider mwc? we are 700 miles away from albuquerque; they would be about 900. neither school's fans travel to games as it is, and its not nor will be a bcs conference. why leave cusa? just asking.

Green Mean was looking at it from the MWC's perspective; not Houston's. Those two markets have more viewers than any currently in the Mountain West. From his perspective he thinks that the MWC should look at the potential TV dollars.

I agree with you that it is highly unlikely that UH will consider (strongly) abandoning a conference that they help found to explore the lateral unknown.

UNT, however, is totally different. It would allow the MWC to continue in the fifth largest market. Our number of students and alumni approximately doubles the total for SMU and TCU combined, giving them an even greater presence. Further, our leaving the SBC would not disrupt CUSA or the WAC.

On the other hand unless one could talk BYU into returning (million to one odds), the WAC or CUSA would be impacted when picking a 12th team. If Utah State were chosen as the twelfth team it would wreck the WAC unless Benson could talk Montana and Montana State into joining. If UTEP were the other team, CUSA would either take LaTech (again causing a problem for the WAC) or a Sun Belt team such as Troy or Middle Tennessee.

  12. Yeah the comments by Evil Vodka cause me to want to flog him for being such an uninformed doucher. How can you argue that Texas St. is not a commuter school? If they weren't then their attendance numbers at games would show something different. UTSA is not a commuter school? Really??? Have you been to that campus?

Being called a commuter school shouldn't be a problem if it's answered correctly. Hell, the University of Texas is a commuter school by definition and it doesn't hurt them. There simply aren't enough dorm beds to qualify. The vast majority live in or near Austin but not on campus. There are enough that live around the city of Denton that I've never had the feeling of North Texas being a commuter school. I can't speak to Texas State but I am curious as to where they commute from. Probably most of them live around San Marcos.

I'd wager that very few universities have enough dorm space to cover the percentage required to NOT be considered a commuter campus if the student enrollment is 30,000 and up.

  13. stop.....stop.....stop.....

you folks have let a new poster with only one post make some of you think that a mwc invite is tomorrow. stop this insanity.

well i guess it is ok to fantisize.

The poster had little to do with it. The premise came mostly from an interview with Craig Thompson by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in which he intimated that the eastern terminus of the MWC would be Texas.

There are four Texas teams in the Big 12 and four in CUSA. Needless to say, the Big 12 schools will not move down in class. Neither will TCU, whose moving up created the possible vacancy. It has been stated that Houston, Rice and SMU are not interested in leaving CUSA for the MWC, which they consider a lateral move. UTEP has stated that it is happy in CUSA and would not consider a move if they are the only Texas team. That leaves only one Texas FBS team...North Texas.

This is only a premise. There have been no official meetings among MWC members nor public statements by the MWC office. This is pure off-season speculation. However, given the new stadium, a substantial increase in projected revenue, a new coaching staff with salaries commensurate with many MWC teams, and statements and actions from our Athletic Department and administration (including the hiring of a consultant) we have plans to advance the program to a conference where payouts are higher. If the MWC wants to retain its presence in the 5th largest media market it is a distinct possibility that North Texas would be chosen.

The depressing thing to me is to constantly see the doom and gloom of 'woe is me', we'll never be able to move from where we are now. It's true that our past has not been filled with agressive ambition to advance our cause, save for the Hayden Fry era. But, mostly it was because our administration was holding us back. That's not true of the last three presidents, however, and the current president has more experience with the NCAA than all of our previous presidents combined in our entire history. The times...they are a changin'.

  14. All those schools are former WAC. Glorified WAC in terms of conference name as the schools are the same as in the historical WAC, not in quality to the current WAC. Geez.

I don't get it. The three that you say were traded...TCU, BYU, and Utah are also former WAC members. If this has now become a glorified WAC then it was a glorified WAC before. Not that that is bad; the WAC was once a very respected conference.

  15. Assuming for a moment that the MWC does want to stay in Texas and both SMU and Houston (plus Rice) aren't interested and select North Texas as one of the new members.

Who would you want as a 12th member?

Who would you think would be the 12th member?
