  1. Stone Earle did exactly what I thought he would do after seeing his videos last Spring. Hope he gets more playing time.

Our Running game has baffled many of us.  Was our offensive line overrated by We the Fans?  I know we tend to do that every Summer.  I also know we had another starter out today so I guess the depth is not as salty as should be?  Hell if I know—experts step in! 🙃

He has proven he will spend money with little regard. Was this donation to help UNT, or embarrass us by putting the condition that we had to name it after a fired coach?

    Good question.
MM & I are Facebook friends, but we’re not drinking buddies.  Politics would probably keep that from ever happening, but I do admire what he did to help unfortunates during Hurricanes  Katrina, Harvey & other disasters. He is a regular folk hero in Houston.

I think it's more about simple logistics for camera location.   The main cameras are weather-protected in the "press"box.  They will usually do tight field shots during the game if the crowd is sparse and you can really only see the crowd on a punt or long pass.  But I have seen a wingzone camera view too for our games that show the extra points and FGs.  I don't recall them panning the home side, but they should if a larger crowd.  Probably a producer's call about shots.

Was just curious to know why one would keep wanting to show empty seats.  You’ve provided some answers.

The UH game crowd today is embarrassing for we who used to follow Coog football in our youth.    I thought Big 12 membership excitement would create larger crowds, but it hasn’t yet what it will create are some schools coming to H-Town that will bring several thousand fans.  That is something we’ve never had the luxury of having in Denton.

  4. We have a few who could probably start at ECU, but we need a whole bunch more. No surprises with that, but we need to get started & NIL as well as Transfer Portal would be a good start.

    Recruiting?
I remember the late Hayden Fry once said if he could just get them on the North Texas campus that he could sign his fair share of blue chippers.  I specifically think of the Burks Washington, Ken Washington, etc. recruiting class.  From that class would be a team that would beat a 7 & 4 Southeast Conference school (among other notable schools).

  5. To be honest, I have a very difficult time dissing a UNT alum who has given our school $1,000,000.  This was during an era at North Texas when no one was giving anywhere close to that kind of money to Mean Green athletics, too.
Jimmy Mac even met his future wife at UNT as well.  Wish we had more of them like that Houston couple.

  6. What kinda’ surprises me with the “GMG.com personnel in charge of (possibly) hiring a new coach” is how they don’t list overall attendance on their job description list.
Stadium attendance (or lack thereof) is part of a list of criteria on many P5 school’s.
Some NCAA D1 FBS head football coaches get bonuses if their school shows marked improvement at the turnstiles.

  7. As a trap game, yes. 😱

My first CFB game to ever attend was at Rice Stadium.  Baylor Bears vs the Rice Owls. (Maybe 15,000 fans in cavernous Rice Stadium).

••• I can still close my eyes looking back to that special day (for me) & smell the aroma of pipe & cigar smoke. That aroma always reminded me of the SWC & UH football games of my youth.

I was a student and this game made me a fan. I'd been to games before but I'd never heard Apogee that loud, especially during the "North Texas" chants where one side responds to the other. I think my favorite memory was some of us students yelling at one of the Rice coaches to recruit better players and him turning around to yell back at us. Great memories all around.

    Apogee loud?
The day after Apogee’s 2011 debut game & in the Sunday sports page the UH Coog’s Coach Kevin Sumlin said he had no idea the new stadium would be as loud.  He had to call 2 “crowd noise” timeouts.  I knew Apogee Stadium was going to be special from that game on.

••• Here’s the 1’st touchdown scored in Apogee Stadium in September of 2011.

  9. It was Halloween Night, 2013, at fabulous Apogee Stadium inside the Mean Green Village.
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba’s Birds the Word! Owls & Eagles!  Great weeknight crowd who were into this football game early on.
I believe it was ESPN who would televise this  birdfest.
••• DFW’s KTCK’ 1310 “The Ticket” (& UNT grad) George “Jub-Jub” Dunham was on the MGRN microphone—UNT sports broadcasting class professor Hank Dickenson was doing the color.
So……Set the Night To Music, Green Brigade, because the Mean Green were hot, were winning & were popular! (It seems to all go hand-in-hand).

••• Was the MG’s Kenny Byers the best open field tackler in MG football history?  •••The Jimmerson Show would take place on this special weeknight game; Then there’s Thompson, Orr, Chancellor, Y’Barbo, Trice & other heroes
•••This Mean Green team (who in a little over 2 months) would play before an estimated 40,000 UNT fans on a New Years Day bowl game in the Cotton Bowl Stadium.
    OK, I’ll shut up!🙅🏽  🙂
    Enjoy the video!!

Hope he loses as i hate the Asstros

I’m from the greater Houston area & have been following the ‘Tros since they came into the majors with the Mets in 1962.
Many fun times at their first home (Colt Stadium) & then the Astrodome.
Players from opposing teams I was fortunate to see as a kid were:
Hank Aaron, Willie Mayes, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Maury Wills, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Stan Musial (in his last season), Ernie Banks, Lou Brock, Richie Allen & so many more.

I am also a Texas Ranger fan & could not understand why they treated Nolan Ryan as they did in his last days as a Ranger.

Same as every year, same publicity stunt

Honestly, UNT TH, does Jim McIngvale really need publicity on any aspects of his life at age 71?
Being an old Colt .45’s/Astros fan i hope he wins his bet & then gives Smatresk & AD Wren Baker half of it to complete the Athletic Center then expand it out be an Apogee End Zone Facilty like La Tech has & SMU will have soon enough.

  12. Jim McIngvale: A UNT Distinguished Alum talks about his years at North Texas.  He was presented an Honorary Degree from UNT Super Alum Brint Ryan & UNT President Smatresk.
Brint Ryan’s international company is CUSA’s main TV sponsor of CUSA-related bowl games, the CUSA basketball tournament in Frisco, the NIT held at the UNT Super Pit & Frisco last year & (I presume) its finals in New York City.

This Video has an ex UNT football player (Sam Golden) from the early 70’s that some of you would remember who spoke highly about the Houston hero of Hurricane Harvey & the Texas Deep Freeze 2 February’s ago.

(Basically, Jim Mac’ & his company staff were busy feeding & saving lives of many of the poor who lost everything in Hurricanes Katrina & Harvey & who  literally had no other place to go).  Good stuff.

  13. Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale has bet $10 million on the Astros to win the World Series. Yesterday, WBAP 820 AM said he could win up to $75-100 million if he wins.

The city of Houston’s super enthusiasts funded a large portion of UNT’s Athletic Center over at the Mean Green Village.

A year or 2 ago I saw a documentary on McIngvale & at his main store information center table was a North Texas Mean Green football helmet.  I’ll try to find that video.

  14. Our fans are some of the biggest social sports climbers in college football.  50 years of all this has shown me that (among a few other things).
Ex UNT AD  Craig Helwig once told me that I was very astute about things concerning North Texas football.  I told him I was merely self taught, informed & like many UNT alums passionate about our school & that I always thought UNT‘s (here’s that word we all hate)

    ••••••••• “potential”•••••••••••

was astounding—-matter a fact it still is.
Still, it seems most UNT head coaches in my adult lifetime left Denton pissed or bitter or both. Most all of us wanted SL (who is honesty a good person from all accounts); well most wanted him to be a raging success,  but I don’t know if his timeline will allow that.  All us romanticist & those who pull for happy endings still pull for an underdog.

    ••• FANS:  FICKLE OR FAITHFUL?
When we lose at UNT we’re like Saint Peter of crowing rooster fame; that is, denying we ever had anything “to do with any of that stuff happening over there in west Denton”, but when we win it becomes one of those  “we were with ‘em all the way” kind of things. So In that regard, I guess we fit in with a very large group of other human beings who sometimes act like—-St. Peter?😇
Yet through it all•••Still Mean Green & still think all that potential is there for U of North Texas.   GMG!

🟠🟢Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, TN.—site of the North Texas Mean Green’s biggest win in school history versus an SEC “7 & 4” Tennessee Volunteers football team.

  15. UTSA’s swarming D reminded me of a UH Coog type of D back when they were good (& ranked).  If it’s taking UTSA to wake us up in Denton Town then so be it.
Remember 30,000 plus MG fans at Apogee last time UH visited Denton & how they kept returning punt returns for TD’s?
OK, I’m tired of hearing how Traylor has been voted Most Likely To Succeed by every friggin’ HS football coach in the state of Texas.(sarc’)
(Of course,  probably 25% of that entire group have degrees from UNT).😏

I agree with Deep Green inasmuch that I think Traylor has out-recruited us for AAC kind of talent compared to that which has kept us a little above average in CUSA.
•••Don’t misunderstand, I feel North Texas still has a number of AAC level talent now, but we just need more since SMU is still going to be in the AAC.

We’d also better get excited about NIL & portal transfer recruiting as well because that is the wave of the future.
