this is green sunglasses talking, but we were top 25 material in 2013... outside of the UTSA disaster and the late Georgia blowout, we only lost to Ohio (coulda shoulda) and Tulane (w/some bogus penalties as our defense was literally beating up other teams). The only other close game we had was against Ball St. if we pull out the tulane game, we are 9-3 at the end of the regular season, heading into the CUSA championship game against Marshall, who we would have smoked... then we head to a better bowl game from there...

Better?   In 2014 weren’t we in the Cotton Bowl Stadium in sunny Dallas on or near a New Years Day before the largest gathering of UNT fans ever (approx. 40,000) vs UNLV & our even winning the game?   (QB Derek Thompson was superb on that day—Hellsbells! The entire team was)!

The photo below was taken at that 2014 Heart of Dallas bowl game, but (of course) we could not sustain that success.  Portland State would be soon on the way to Apogee & Denton.

Tulane is now in the top 25.

Why?  Because they were in the Southeast Conference 50 years ago?  Is it truly in a name with some schools & where your school was 50 or so years ago?
Well, we’ve been trying to figure out how to run a football program for decades in Denton & one school near & dear to all did it in 1.  One might begin to think Fouts & Apogee were built on a Comanche/Kiowa burial grounds or something.
I once heard late ex UNT AD Andy Everest say: “If UNT were in Gainesville we’d be far enough from DFW to draw more fans.”
So….How long can all this keep happening? Some of us don’t have another half century left.  I’ll hang up & listen. 📞

  3. Are most of these OOC future games in the meme below (other than those who are now AAC games) still on our future football schedule?

What happened to Covid schedule casualties Texas A&M (a $1.2 million guarantee) & UH?

To play more potential or present Top 25 schools makes it easier for our future football program to gain Top 25 if that’s our goal (& I’d think we all still hope it is).

Playing unappealing schools who won’t draw flies at Apogee when we start another run of winning will not help us get to Top 25.

Ex UNT AD Craig Helwig literally scheduled Matt Simon out of a future as an NCAA FBS HFC with his murderous OOC scheduling so I would think AD Wren Baker needs to find a happy medium for future OOC scheduling.

Great game! What’s up with so many empty seats. I miss Fouts Field.

What’s up with the empty seats?
I think SMU destroying us in the first game of the season is (partly) what’s up & then losses to 2 we thought we had a chance with—UNLV & Memphis.
NIL & the Transfer Portal (& our mostly non-participation with both) has discouraged many, many fans in the G5, too.  Count me in as one of those.

SMU at UNT—1’st home game of the 2022 season.

  5. Yesterday, Barry Switzer said (& I very liberally paraphrase): “NIL is going to ruin college football.”
Yet, Barry, now that the Genie is out of the bottle how can it be altered to not be as harmful to the NCAA?

🤔••• WOW! While Switzer was sitting on his sofa in Norman having no idea what Jerry Jones was going to do, it is my understanding that he actually inquired about the UNT job after Dennis Parker was fired.  Honest Injun’!  Can you only imagine…His name would have sold an additional 10,000 season tickets (wishbone or no wishbone). The expansion of Apogee Stadium would have been soon after.

Except it couldn’t, they were able to get something like 100 acres given to them for this project. Frisco is also part of UNT Denton unlike the other things you mentioned. I tend to agree that often the other parts of UNT seem to be a headwind for us as the flagship but Frisco was a homerun imo.

No rocket science here, but UNT does not have the financial resources of a  UT system, TAMU system & Texas Tech system to spread at all its campuses in Denton, Dallas, Fort Worth & now Frisco.

For every major financial gift a UNT-Dallas receives is one that will not go to UNT-Denton. State Senator Royce West pulled a fast one on the UNT system & he knows it. Sell UNT-Dallas to a system that has the resources & can afford it.

Was it the UNT System that previously had plans for TCU to join in on its UNTHSC at Fort Worth?

  7. Concerning lopsided all time football series records here is this on the OU vs Kansas State series:

    OU……….77 wins
    KSU……..22 wins

  8. There are many “half century & up” MG fans on GMG.  I think we would all agree that MG football has not been consistent in winning enough to get a consistent groundswell of support.  Yet when the MG have snuck in a few wins, our attendance has been worthy of stadium expansion blueprints.

I think back to the 2014 bowl win in the Cotton Bowl/HOD bowl game.  With almost 40,000 MG fans there that day, it became our Nirvana. UNT super alum George Derr had the quote of that day saying: “Fellers, I think back to a time when all we Fouts Field fans were on a first name basis.” 😆

We have to plan for a 50,000 enrollment university that most believe with consistent winning will draw many , many new fans. We set an Apogee UNT student attendance record not that long ago.  It was a beaut’ to behold, yet it only scratched the surface of what could be.
Now we UNT alums & Denton County need to come forward.  A season by season UNT winning football program makes all the pieces of our puzzle fit nicely.

UCLA plays in front of less fans than many local high schools.

Did I read less than 1,000 at a recent home game for the Bruins?  That scares me for NCAA football in general.

I think most who no longer have anger for the Twins leaving pull for them to be successful.  I do.
I’m not sure NIL money would have kept them in Denton truth be told.

  10. The UNT System should have focused on their main campus in Denton, med school in Fort Worth & law school in Dallas & that’s it.

UNT should sell their south Dallas campus to the Texas A&M system & stop fighting their education wars on too many satellite fronts one of which is Frisco.
Too many seem to think UNT-Denton must be somewhere in southern Oklahoma. What’s going to happen in Frisco could have easily  happened at UNT in Denton.

They sat on the opposite end of my row in 104.  I'm not sure they have been to a game before this one because I haven't seen them until this past Saturday or at least not here.

I would think some UNT official would have already had the Drummonds in their luxury suite in the past.

I wish Ree would do one of her shows from the fine kitchens of Apogee Stadium.🙂 She has spoken kindly about UNT (with photos) in one of her publications.
I’ve watched Ree’s TV show on several occasions & she’s good at what she does, but I still burn water when boiling.

    Mr. Ladd Drummond ‘s bio…

His ranch is humongous.  One told me it was easily the largest in Oklahoma. Ladd is an Arizona State alum.

Not to rehash this conversation that was had in another thread months ago but I don't get the appeal of having basketball played at the athletic village.

5,500 is too small in my opinion, I think 7,000 to 7,500 would be good. I also feel strongly that basketball needs to stay on campus. Just my opinion.

Especially since we had almost 9,000 in attendance at the Super Pit for the La Tech win last Winter. Among them was this Country Music Hall of Fame inductee & while on that theme—RIP Loretta Lynn. 61A9E03E-F3D7-47A6-B8E6-8D95D0EC0114.jpeg.f55afbe1d9252ea30e7f7a76c566f85f.jpeg

Well, our end zone may not look quite that fancy but I expect it to be very functional.  It's my understanding that the videoboard will be removed (boo) and the Athletic Building will be expanded to include premium seating.  The portion to the east will be a large expansion of the weight room.  That could greatly improve our S and C.  There are too many athletes trying to use a small weight room so that each athlete is scheduled over a twelve hour? day.  With a lot more equipment (and room to use it) this should allow for more time on each machine with no odd scheduling hours.  I'm thinking that the poor S and C has not been the fault of the coaches.  There's to be more study rooms, training rooms and coaches offices.  It may not be as flashy as Appy State but it'll be just as functional.  Oh yeah.  I believe that they are also going to improve the football locker room.  I don't like them moving the big video and putting four small ones in each corner.  I would hope that they will sooner or later put a board on the roof of the athletic building and/or the middle of the wing section.

You & I, Jack, agree on so much (& have now for 50 years).  I, too, would love a huge sideline-to-sideline video screen at top center of an End Zone facility.

This La Tech rendering below of 2 very large screens I could live with because they are large. Their finished product it appears to me will not allow that to happen, though, so another rendering that has gone unfulfilled?
You posted “premium seating” but have you heard how many seats in an Apogee end zone facility?

Yes both NT and UTSA need to win their next games before the 22nd, but looking at the standings, this could be the most meaningful game in the series since 2013. The winner, barring some disastrous collapse (which is something NT would do) would most likely host the championship game.

NT and UTSA should be 3-0 in conference going into it, it should be huge. Hopefully NT shows up.

I’m as big a homer as anyone & many posts I’m looking thru the green-tinted glasses, but watching UTSA in 3 of their 2022  televised games I don’t see our game with them being close at all in the Alamodome. (I hope the 450 member Green Brigade shows for this game),
We have talent on our team, but their starters have more game experience & their QB is a game-changer & seems a man with a mission.

  15. MeThinks UNT can (& will), but winning seasons & bowl game wins is essential & is the minimal expectation.  I agree with the SMU poster who said no reason UNT can’t annually win 8 games per season.

One has told me Wren Baker is the kind of AD who can get the money. (I believed him, but most likely it won’t be next week or next month).

I applaud what SMU & Gary Webber are doing at G. Ford because they have set a new AAC standard for stadium expansion.  We can whine all we want on this forum (& we will), but UNT now has no choice to do similar if we want to leave the OldDenton stuck in mud mode behind & compete in the American upper echelon.

Below is what some in one of the poorest spots in America has admirably done with their stadium.  Really bothers me to hear Texans on GMG continually say what we cannot do. UTSA fans don’t  seem to do much of that & look (short & long range) where they are headed?  (Some of us also like who the RR’s play for their OOC home games the last few years).

I think overall, you're just seeing less people go to games so making the experience itself top notch is more important. Most programs are having attendance woes. You can watch most games from the comfort of your couch without dealing with overpriced food, traffic, dirty restrooms, cell tower dead zones, and so on. I think making the game day experience better will get the occasional visitors, especially those with families, to come back more regularly.

Might this trend be fine for schools who’ll get $24-$30 million annually from its P5 conference coffers, but for G5 schools not so much since some need good attendance for the all important gate receipts?

(Honestly, did UCLA only draw 1,000 fans for a recent game)?

I’m for any logo or symbol that would usher in a new era of multi-winning seasons.
If we’d already been doing that with the expected good attendance (from a 44,000+  enrollment UNT) along with  serious stadium expansion talk most likely we’re in the discussion of some P5 conference talk.  (No school with 30K seat stadiums or blueprints for an expansion are part of that kind of talk).

🐎 SMU-haters would even have to admit the Stangs have all their cards on the table trying to get into a P5 league.  Don’t know what their chances are but if they could buy their way into one I’d  say don’t bet against them.

The irony of it all is how SMU’s  “lights out”  NIL program could actually hurt them in that venture. Think about all the present Big 12 schools who could never compete with SMU as far as NIL is concerned?  What a double-edged sword SMU’s NIL would be.

  18. Who was the stud UNT lost  to the Jehovah Witness his senior year in Denton which would have been (I think) the 1971/1972 season?  Seems his first name was Bobby.
*** There were few SWC teams who could beat Missouri Valley Conference teams back in that era.
