    Mac rumors are getting heavy

By who?  The same rumor mill on GMG & by the same hardy handful?

As another said, Mac would not pursue discussing any job (Tech or whoever) until they get back from Las Vegas.  Seems most of this group were similarly confident Mac would most definitely take the SMU job after last season & FWIW—he’s still getting his mail in Denton.

Why does the possibility of losing our head basketball coach get such non-stop attention on GMG?  Hope Coach Mac doesn’t take any of these “sure thing & done deal” job projections by our own fans personal.

  2. Coach Mac’s decision with SMU last year did not surprise me at the time & is a reason I think he stays at UNT now. (To be honest, I think he can eventually do better than Texas Tech).

One has to consider that what Mac decides on will be a family decision. Most of his family live in Denton & Denton County.  Mac is a PK (preacher’s kid) & grew up in a conservative Christian environment where money & fame are not god.
••• I may eat crow with this, but I think he stays at UNT. His salary should dramatically be adjusted, though.

(Weren’t the Mean Green great last night)?

Is this really where we're at now? competing for FCS assistants against Texas State?

You people were calling for Seth's head just for this

    Whoever knows about coaching hires?

For instance, in 1981 upon glowing letters of recommendations from Paul “Bear” Bryant & UT AD Darrell Royal, a UNT selection committee hired ex Mississippi St. head coach Bob Tyler.  That hire lasted one year. I try to block that year out of my mind.

With Eric Morris I was first totally underwhelmed & after looking across the NCAA from coaches thoughts about the new UNT Coach I became overwhelmed. Seems others on GMG did that too.

One thing about it, Coach Morris will have much stiffer competition in the American to recruit at that level & then to win as well.

Well we interviewed Jim Harbaugh then too but he went to Stanford and got a little more money then we could afford at that time

    I heard Harbaugh had applied.

After Dennis Parker was fired one source in the UNT Athletic Dept. said Barry “he was tired of sitting on his Norman sofa” Switzer inquired about the Mean Green head football coach’s job.  Why not? His friend Hayden Fry had a good rebound of his career while in Denton. (Jerry Jones would eventually hire Switzer for the Cowboys).

I hope and have a feeling we get a real home run of a hire. Mainly because I would love to rub it in the face of everyone saying “we shouldn’t have fired Seth” and “how can we expect better than we he did for us since we are North Texas with a bad athletic history”

No athletic history before 1989 & for a little over half a century was no worse than the Kansas State Wildcats.  They seem to have rebounded.

  6. I think many would be concerned that we’ve only defeated 1 school thus far who will go to the American along with UNT & then the loss to Memphis.
UAB just has our number. Last 2 years we’ve had terrible starts vs UAB.
Last year at Apogee in the first series Aune throws an interception right in the hands of their DB who runs it in for a TD & then it got worse throughout that game.  Yesterday it was the fumble in our first series.  What gives with these bad starts?
•••Our recruiting seems to have hit a particular plateau that I don’t think will get us in the top half of the new-look American.  UTSA seems to be off on a running start with their recruiting as they, too, head into the AAC.
Wren Baker has a big decision to make & after all is said & done I think he has to look at the total wins/losses after SL’s 7 years & then determine what kind of momentum we have going into the AAC.

    Lyrics:
To fallen soldiers let us sing
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the mansions of the Lord

#No more bleeding, no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
    Just divine embrace, eternal light
In the mansions of the lord
    #Where no mothers cry
    And no children weep
We shall stand and guard through the angels sleep
While through the ages safely keep
    The mansions of the lord.

Spread is Running 4.5 to 6 - interestingly the sentiment is leaning towards the Mean Green to win though! Looks like they get their starting QB back which is surely helping them spread-wise.
I like our chances - I’m a Ragsdale fan and think with Smart and Farrar we’ll get it done on the ground to open up some passing options!

I’m a Ragsdale fan, too, & Smart & Farrah. Hell! I like the whole team! I hope they just keep on jelling all the way to the bowl game.

For some of you, it is ALL you do.

Some act like we’re the Notre Dame of the Southwest & every “interested in the UNT job” coach overlooks what some see us as & that’s a coach’s final stop before they start selling insurance.

I think present UNT leadership at the   very top makes the UNT job, location, a future 50,000 student enrollment (which will one day actually be a cash cow advantage);  our facilities & available money; anyway all that makes for what could be a cushy job in Denton, but at some point we have to have results by someone who (in deed) makes UNT a dream job. Meanwhile, 22K at a Homecoming game has to be addressed.  Oh! I see! That’s all about us—the fans.

  10. Full disclosure:
I honestly thought the RR’s would clip our wings big time in the AlamoDome last month, but today we are just one play in that game from leading the entire CUSA race.  I think UAB will be tough because they seem to have our number.  Texas is in our school name & that seems to create extra effort from some non-Texas opponents.

I’m even feeling better about our going to a much tougher American next year although we know recruiting big, fast players will be very necessary.

Homecoming was a blast & attendance fair, but we know how that can be corrected.

Denton Rancher the late Rex Cauble gave UNT this classic car.  We had a MG Club BBQ at his arena years ago & Rex personally gave a handful of us a mini-tour & a chance to meet Cutter Bill—his famous cutting horse.  CB was in his last days.
(I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t made a movie about Cauble).

  11. Jim McIngvale was at UNT the same time my age group were there.  Being from the Houston area I’ve been aware of his benevolences for years. He has the ego, but who else at that stratosphere doesn’t?

👏 👏The thing is Mattress Mac gave $1,000,000 to UNT when no one else was giving that kind of cash to UNT in the early 2000’s.  Too much water under the bridge since all the semi-drama with Dickey took place 20+ years ago.
To move on from that kind of thing is ultimately healthier for all, isn’t it?

Y’all pardon me while I still wipe my eyes from the Astros win last night. I saw my first Astros game in 1962 at Colt Stadium when they were called the Colt .45’s. So many great memories albeit not many wins back then & thereafter.

  12. Mayor Hudspeth did a great job of speaking at the Unity Plaza event yesterday at 1:30 pm.  He is a well spoken mayor & he is a Mean Green supporter.  They say in politics you have to be all things to all people & the World’s Largest University Predominately For Women just happens to be in the city he governs so obviously he can show no partiality.

I hope Vito will post his coverage of this special event sometimes today.  I say about 300 fans all spread out were in attendance.

I got to say hello & hug the great Abner Haynes.  At age 85(?) he brought up a 1985 Mexican lunch in Fort Worth with Mean Green great Ron Shanklin, himself & I had at Dos Gringos.  💰That was 2 hours of Mean Green gold for this fan & it was the first time I had ever heard “the train to UH incident”  when the Houston hotel management said “no blacks allowed.”  That particular Jim Crow era story did have a happy ending—others in the U.S. did not.
Shank’ told me at that Ft.Worth lunch how a prominent Arkansas Razorback called him years later out of the blue & told him: “You do know North Texas actually won that 1968 game, right?” (You who were at that game will know exactly what Ron Shanklin was talking about).

•••BTW,  veteran college football fans will remember that it was the very next year that Frank Broyles’ Arkansas hosted DKR & the Longhorns in “the Game of the Century.”
️️ ️ The quality of Mean Green football in the 1960’s was unbelievably astounding. Wish I could have seen it, but I was in high school.

Below are 2 pics I took at Unity Plaza yesterday.

Jim, I think that is a bit apples and oranges the Cowboys did not need support from from a head coach to be popular. North Texas doesn't have the fanbase to endure a coach with a personality like Seth. I went to church with Landry and he was a pretty good speaker.

(Still trying to learn brevity is the wit of soul—I know I have a long ways to go)

You were a member of Lovers Lane Methodist Church, Tony?

My all time hero as a kid funeral was held there.  #7 of the NY Yankees.  At age 14 I was privileged to see “the Mick” hit the 1’st home run on the debut night of the Astrodome—April 9, 1965. I was with 2 very special people that night—my mom & dad.

Your thoughts on our situation I respect.  Winning cures cancer & true, we haven’t had near enough wins, but like much of America I subconsciously pull for the underdog & on GMG Seth is a most definite underdog.
🟢••• Tomorrow at the Unity Plaza Dedication (1:30 pm) I hope I get to shake hands with 2 black men who were underdogs in the mid-1950’s. They stepped on the campus of a traditional Caucasian university to integrate North Texas. God I hope the black UNT students (with white, brown, yellow, etc.) attend this historical  event en mass.  Get Abner to talk about he & Leon’s experience when the Mean Green took a train from Denton to Houston to play the UH Coogs.  That story will move many to tears.

Anyway, I hope all will take time to enjoy the UNT Homecoming & give the SL thing a short vacation.  There was a time in the last 2 seasons I thought he might need to be replaced, but we’ll see.  Like most, I hope we win on Saturday because doggone it—it’s our school. The UNT football team deserves a sellout. Lots of tickets have already been sold—we’ll see.

Note:  How about that quickly rescheduled Homecoming Bonfire last night? Harry sent this pic to me from his IPhone. 7F641640-C487-4B45-90CD-D45B0588453D.jpeg.ca830ab86a30fa13be2e7484799b14c2.jpeg

He's done an above average (if not excellent) job at hiring head coaches, across all sports.  Gotta give him that, at least.  Hard to hold him accountable for the traditions part, but I certainly think it's an area he can influence (see the new Maniacs for basketball).  The other points you make I can't refute.

I believe Wren Baker is a treasure for UNT Athletics & I’d hate to lose him, but his treasure’ness might not be seen or appreciated until he has hired the full gamut of varsity head coaches.  After all, he did hire Grant McCasland.
I think he also communicates with our rich & famous quite well, too.  I think he seems to impresses them & that is most important.

  16. Look at our HFC turnover the last 50 years? Who do we think we can get that’s not going to come here to try to revive their former P5 career?  That’s where Coach Dan McCarney was headed before his unfortunate stroke.
Yes, our facilities are very nice & the next venue AD Wren Baker announces is going to knock all our socks off. Guaranteed!

At last weeks TV game I saw a part of SL I hadn’t really seen. He was on the sideline hugging players who accepted his hugging. (You know what I mean).
