    GMG!

Prediction:  Some of us on GMG were at the UNT•SMU game when 10,500 butts in seats showed.  (I believe the Dallas Morning News actually said “10,700” in their boxscore).  Anyhow, the Super Pit was rockin’ that night & the ol’ Lady  will again this coming season when the ‘Stangs play us this Fall. (I remember an SMU 🔻🔷🔻fraternity were sitting in the aisles where their tickets were located.  I believe the Denton Fire Marshall (friend Bob Hagemon) also did them a favor by turning his head to allow it.

I could be wrong, Jim, but I believe that you only have to sit out a year if it's your second transfer.

I would think any kind of transfer.
A transfer situation tells one that particular recruit &/or school made a mistake in judgement.  I would think it’s a bigger expense for the school since they gave a scholarship to one who was not going to stick with a commitment. •••The NCAA has made leaving & not honoring a commitment too easy.
A recruit that didn’t get that ‘ship could have been a keeper & have turned out to be an All American.

I have no more faith in this present NCAA Rules Committee than I do with the Marxists running Washington; that is, those who try to convince all that $7.00 per gallon of gas is actually a good thing & that a polar bear could end up at their front door any day.  I guess if you clearly cannot run a government for all 50 states (at present count) that any kind of diversion is your ally.

I’m with you old timers about missing the good ole days…but these ain’t them and it’s one of those classic, don’t hate the player, hate the game situations.  If you want to be mad, be mad at the  NCAA or our fellow alumni who chose ignore reality or not to care.  Asking Tylor to forgo $30,000 minimum to a long term reality of millions for his own life future in exchange for being loyal to our silly egos is antiquated emoting now.  I totally get it.  I miss true commitment.  But this isn’t only pure capitalism now, it’s the wild Wild West and every man has to play his cards right to make the most of himself.  Don’t judge TP with the standards of yesteryear.

All in all, I think all will wish only the very best for the great Tylor Perry!  Nothing but good memories.

you made a very bad sports point. don't keep doubling down.

Jelly Walker may have been the best visitors team guard I’ve seen in Denton since Maurice Cheeks future NBA’er played there toward the end of our Missouri Valley Conference era.

Tylor Perry is the best guard in Mean Green basketball history.  Wish he would have stayed & built onto that legacy (& maybe a statue) at the outdoor plaza of the Super Pit.

  5. Are we surprised? I’m not. I know others who aren’t, either. I think TP was going even if Coach Mac had stayed.  Who knows—maybe  he’ll change his mind?

🤔 Hmmm? I know all Tech varsity athletes receive $36,000 NIL money. This is not the NCAA we all grew up with & most of us genuinely hate it.

We still don’t have enough continued tradition & success at UNT for good talent to want to feel tied to UNT & stay in Denton.  Every success story we’ve ever had who left Denton in the past it seems has mentioned lack of fan support.  He didn’t say it, but Wren Baker had to wonder—“just what’s it going to take to put butts inside a fairly nice spectator’s venue?

At the Abner Haynes/Dr. Leon King Unity Plaza ceremony last Fall an Athletic official told our group before the ceremony began that he & SL were in Houston 3 times the previous 2 years visiting UNT letterman Mattress Mac McIngvale, but that’s where the conversation ended  on that ceremonial day. 16EBAF7E-D827-45E9-BBD3-857BDDA08E35.thumb.jpeg.d7374a124f9b8c6920f57bdf7d763567.jpeg

  7. Some interesting End Zone Facilities pictured in this article link & to ADLER: Is the La Tech facility as seen below what you had in mind for fabulous Apogee Stadium?  I think it’s very impressive & Tech officials said was built for only $15 million?  (That’s even more impressive).

The McCasland deal has been in place for a week. Hodge is going to be the next HC at UNT. That's been known to everyone. Players knew. Local media knew. Unfortunately a small handful of media folks couldn't maintain a sufficient amount of professionalism to let things play out. It was handled as well as could be handled. McCasland is going to bring a couple of staff members to Tech but some will stay to continue on with Hodge.

I told a fellow alum that Grant probably knew he was moving days ago. Hoping no key players join him.

I don’t know that I completely agree with the first part of your post.  I posted yesterday a too long post about this, but virtually no one supports D1 basketball more than we do unless they have had major success or been a part of an elite conference.  We have a cavernous arena that feels more empty than full…but 4-5k fans in seats is above average for a school that has never made a sweet 16.

Grant can stay or go.  I don’t wish him anything but the best.  But UNT must keep the momentum going and I think we will.  Would be great if Ross can become our Mark Few.

Easy to see that Grants SWC/Big 12 coaching buddies are probably his main cheerleaders & encouragers for him to move to the 🎶 land of sky blue waters.🎶 (sarc’)

    (Wasn’t that in a  Hamm’s 🍺 beer commercial)?

He really is what you are looking for in a head coach. Has always been a great representative of the UNT. He really has a passion for coaching young men. Sat next to his parents at a UTSA BB game a few years ago in San Antonio. His father was a minister so I could easily see where Mc got that passion. He deserves the best.

How funny—I sat by his mother at last years LaTech game (attended by crooner Randy Travis & Company) & before the largest Super Pit crowd since 1980.

Mother Hodge was fun to talk to. I told her about some of the name players & schools we played in the 70’s & 80’s. She was duly impressed as I still am myself.

Tonight will be Grant's 200th game coaching for the Mean Green. If we win, it will put Grant solely in second place in all-time program wins (135) over Bill Blakeley (134). Blakeley coached 219 games for North Texas.

    https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/north-texas/men/coaches.html

If Grant is gone after tonight, I am #TeamHodge and look forward to him continuing the success. Also, I can't stand seeing Benford in the Top 5 of our program's wins leaders. 🤮

I fear Hodge could go to Lubbock except a head coach job would be hard to turn down.  In spite of what ESPN broadcasters seems to think—UNT is not chopped liver. Any D1 school in the Lone Star state is not.

Grant had been touting Hodge for a HBC job since last year (if not sooner).

I thought smu was talking about going to the Pac 12. If the more important schools leave the conference, does that really help the pony?

Not if the PAC 12 loses P5 rating that  doesn’t help SMU at all.

Easy to see SMU powers cannot justify building a south end zone expansion  using ex Dallas Mayor/SMU alum Garry Weber’s  $50 million donation if they stay in a G5 conference.

I agree with Gray Eagle that the P5 & G5 designations have to go. That would be a game-changer in so many ways.

UNT needs to build our end zone venue  because we flat out need it but mostly for all the other ancillary athletic facility square footage space that will come with it.

Also I know there's still a chance Grant stays but I just feel it's highly unlikely... Tech would've hired a new HC by now if it wasn't him. I am trying to prepare myself so I don't feel depressed when it's finally announced...

I got to have a conversation with Grant earlier this year and he's truly one of the most humble yet driven people I have ever met. He gives you countless reasons to root for him and I am so damn proud of what he's accomplished at UNT. He deserves to take his talents to the next level and as much as I wish I could be selfish and feel like he should stay, I know he's earned whatever is coming to him. Much love for Mac

I am selfish & I hope he stays.  Bet his family does to.  He’s got a lifetime job in Denton & can move UNT to the next level. I just thought he could do better than TT.  They sure have gone through the coaches in Lubbock plus the  RR’s have only gone to one more Final 4 than UNT.🙄

Sorry, but  I’ve never seen Lubbock as a bastion for the “finer” black athlete (unless the Cotton Eyed Joe is part of their dance repertoire).  Texas sportswriters from decades past have said the same thing.

My family got to Texas in 1834 by way of Illinois,  but best I know Lubbock was not on their check list of places to settle.

Even worse was the ESPN announcers giving Judy credit for all of the success.

Of course, they didn't mention that she was losing all of these successful teams.

Gotta’ get all this out of our system if what seems to be the inevitable actually happens. (O Lord as if what’s happening in the daily  polarization of America ain’t enough)? 😳

You are right—not one time did they mention the CUSA schools leaving for the American.
Of course, on their list of “don’t forget to mention that you’re not going to see Grant McCasland in Denton much longer.”  I count at least 3 times on that theme from the ESPN broadcast team during our Wisconsin win. After reviewing video, 1 or 2 times during the Oklahoma State game. It’s like they are telling TV viewers “now wait a gol’ darned minute—let’s not get too excited about whats happening in Denton, Texas, folks. It won’t be for much longer.”🤢

I think most will remember when the school located in the oasis of the Texas desert lost their head basketball coach to UT🔸Austin. Remember how pissed the “guns up” crowd were when that took place?  It makes our response to our best ever Coach in UNT history look like a yawn.

Just seems we sometimes like to think that we are the only school to experience a successful athletic employee leaving for another opportunity. To be honest, it probably hasn’t happened near enough if you think back the last half century plus years which many on this fan forum can tell you about firsthand. Cumulative Wins vs Losses records by coaches who were not renewed their contracts at UNT proves the point. Good people were losing their jobs up there, but like old time MLB manager Leo Durocher once said—“nice guys finish last.”

Nevertheless, it’s been a fun run having Grant McCasland show us the Super Pit could really be much more than a superb wind break for the tennis courts adjacent to it and he showed us—what the possibilities were in Denton, especially now with this NIT experience; the invaluable national television exposure we had with it & even today having an upcoming American Athletic Conference mate show  all how a NCAA Final 4 experience is more within our reach than ever before.

We all just have to move on—we’ve done it before. Matter of fact, most NCAA schools have as well.

Should we have a wager with how soon anyone on the ESPN broadcast team says: “Don’t look for Grant to be on the Mean Green sideline next year?”  (Fran & the sideline reporter fought for that honor early last night).

Last year it was a cinch with some posters on GMG that SMU would flash a few dollars at our Coach & he would be gone ASAP for University Park & in a Highland Park minute. He politely told SMU officials “thanks but no thanks” stayed in Denton yet no ESPN broadcasters in the 2023 NIT has yet to evention mention that story— have they?

•••• A Final 4 berth for Coach  McCasland & the Mean Green may now be an easier feat in the American Athletic Conference than a revised Big 12. *** FAU has become living proof of that
