  1. “That financial narrative on our commitment is dated and tired,” Babcock said during a Tuesday news conference. “... We’ve added 8-10 recruiting positions, and we have a further plan for that, and the fundraising will certainly help us get there. We are certainly limited somewhat, but there’s a few things that make me bristle, and when people don’t think we have a commitment to football and it’s not important and we don’t care, I don’t like that too much.”

Beamer’s program thrived in a smaller recruiting universe that didn’t demand constant reinvestment. Besides, he was a Hall of Fame coach and Hokies icon.

Fuente and Babcock work in a global environment that includes nationwide recruiting, social media, transfer freedom and name, image and likeness monetization. So for all of Virginia Tech’s assets, the job has become more difficult.

Hired in late 2015, Fuente appeared eminently qualified to tackle that challenge.

  2. In-state foes will clash on Thursday night when the UT Arlington Mavericks visit the North Texas Mean Green at The Super Pit. UT Arlington is off to a 1-2 start after losing a heartbreaker to the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Tuesday by an 80-71 final in overtime as a one-point home underdog. North Texas is also coming off a tough loss as it dropped a 69-66 decision to the Buffalo Bulls on Monday as a 1.5-point home favorite, and is now 1-1 on the young season.

This is historically a competitive rivalry with the Mean Green holding a narrow 30-26 advantage all-time. North Texas has won two straight over the Mavericks, including a 77-66 road victory in the most recent matchup in December of 2019.

After an up-and-down season offensively last year, UT Arlington is averaging 73.3 points per game on a healthy 62.1% shooting from two and 27.3% shooting from three. The Mavericks defense has fallen off from last year to start the season, allowing 81 points per game on opponent shooting splits of 39.2% from two and 36.9% from deep.

With the Mavericks' top two scorers from a season ago gone, Azore is now the No. 1 option at 14 points per game to start this year. JUCO transfer Shemar Wilson is adding 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while Akobundu-Ehiogu is averaging eight points and 2.7 blocks per game on a whopping 84.6% shooting from the floor.

There are no reported injuries for the Mavericks heading into Thursday's game.

  3. We’ve compiled the first version of our coaching board, which will feature several names, many of whom probably aren’t even under consideration. Still, their names have been bandied about through various outlets.

On Tuesday, athletic director Whit Babcock said he would prefer someone with head-coaching experience, and his previous hires in other sports indicate that line of thinking. We will still include some coordinators on this list for different reasons.

Herman, 46, is working as an offensive analyst in the NFL with the Chicago Bears this season. If you recall, he was a part of the 2015-16 hiring cycle that featured Fuente. Herman was hired by Texas and lasted five years before being fired in January. Herman checks some boxes, as he is an outstanding recruiter. Outside of that, though, he doesn’t seem like a natural fit at Virginia Tech. The new coach needs to fit the culture at Virginia Tech. That doesn’t feel like Herman.

  4. Napier was involved in several Power Five openings last year, but ultimately opted to stay at Louisiana, where he's on the verge of another impressive season.

“I think Napier would be the 1A, but I don’t think Chadwell is that far behind," Kanell said. "He would infuse a lot of … it’s kind of like dating, you know? You date one type of person and then you go exactly the other direction. To me, Justin Fuente is kind of boring, pretty straight forward, not a ton of personality. You get a Chadwell in there and that’s going in an entirely new direction. Young guy, he’s going to have the mullet out there, mustache, it’s a totally different direction. I think either one of those, the fanbase would be infused with a lot of life.”

  5. An epic showdown for conference supremacy, 10 weeks in the making, is finally here for the UAB football team.

The Blazers take their final road trip of the season as they face undefeated and 15th-ranked UTSA, Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CST on ESPN+.

“They’ve had an unbelievable season,” UAB head coach Bill Clark said. “Coach (Jeff) Traylor has done an incredible job. We have been seeing this thing building. We’ve been looking at the players and I think we’ve been seeing them for three years. These guys have helped grow with their program and now here they are in their senior year and some of them super seniors.”

  6. The first big blow to the Missouri Valley Conference in the recent conference realignment shift has taken place and Loyola Chicago is headed out the door.

After nine years in the Valley, the Ramblers will move to the Atlantic 10 Conference starting in July.

The move comes with the Valley set to add Belmont University before the 2022 season.

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports reported the Missouri Valley Conference is now "ambitiously pursuing a plan to add multiple schools" while citing sources. The three schools in the mix are reportedly Murray State, UT Arlington and Kansas City — with Murray State and UT Arlington being the two strongest candidates.

"In its 115-year history, the Missouri Valley Conference has undergone many changes in membership," MVC Commissioner Jeff Jackson said in a statement. "The Valley will continue to remain proactive and progressive as we navigate the current collegiate environment. Loyola Chicago has been a valued member of the Missouri Valley Conference and we wish Loyola all the best as it begins its next chapter."

  7. DENTON, TX – Trailing by 11 with just under nine minutes left in the second half, the University at Buffalo men's basketball team hit its final nine shots from the floor as the Bulls came back to defeat the defending C-USA champions North Texas, 69-66.  The victory evens Buffalo's record to 1-1 on the season.

Four Bulls scored in double figures in the win, including a Buffalo career best for senior Maceo Jack.  Jack had five points early as the Bulls raced out to a 7-2 lead and UB would go on to lead by as many as eight before North Texas came back. The Mean Green led by as many as six points in the first half before taking a 36-32 lead into the break.

The two teams found themselves tied at 42-42 with 16:13 left in the second half, but from there North Texas went on a 10-1 run to take a nine-point lead. A pair of free throws gave the Mean Green a 56-45 lead with 8:51 left, but then UB got the three ball going.

Back-to-back threes from Jeenathan Williams and Josh Mballa quickly cut the deficit to just five. Trailing by six with just under five minutes left, the Bulls cut it to one as Ronaldo Segu drained a three, followed by a long two from Jack. Williams put the Bulls ahead for the first time since early in the first half with a three, giving UB the 64-63 lead with 3:12 left.

Buffalo got its lead up to as many as five at 68-63 with 45 seconds left, but North Texas would cut that to three and the Mean Green had two looks from three, but couldn't convert as the final buzzer sounded.

Jack tied for game-high honors with his 18 points, going 7-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-8 from three-point range. Mballa and Segu each added 17 points and Mballa had the double-double with 10 rebounds. Segu chipped in four assists.

Williams had 14 points, six rebounds, and a career high six assists. 10 of his 14 points came in the second half. Sophomore David Skogman added three points.

In the second half alone, the Bulls shot 53.8% from the floor, including 63.6% from three point range.

With the season-opening two-game road trip in the books, the Bulls will have their regular season home opener on Saturday afternoon against Rider.  Game time is set for 2pm.

  8. Earlier this fall before the North Texas vs. UAB football game, Bruzzy’s UNT Golf Facility opened after nearly two years of planning and construction.

North Texas president Neal J. Smatresk, Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker, members of the UNT System Board of Regents and the facility’s namesake and lead donor Jerome “Bruzzy” Westheimer were all present for the opening of the $3 million on-campus practice facility.

Bruzzy’s is 5,047 square feet and features two hitting bays with the latest swing analysis and technology, a virtual putting green, locker rooms, a study space, coaches offices, and a lounge and kitchen area.

  9. Edging closer – North Texas is creeping towards bowl eligibility with two games remaining in the regular season. The Mean Green were 1-6 before their three-game winning streak. That continued with a 20-17 win over UTEP. North Texas should reach five wins with FIU up next on the schedule. A season-ending clash with UTSA could be a game that determines the future of North Texas football. A win would put the team at 6-6 and on a five-game winning streak to close the year. A loss might result in the end of the Seth Littrell era.

I live in Houston these days, so I made the 4 hour drive north and I'll be lucky enough to see the game. Denton is a nice town with a historic town center. Much nicer than I expected. My first UB basketball game in almost a decade.🤠

(Full disclosure. I'm often not the best of luck for UB teams)

The Buffalo Bulls will have the best player on the floor in this game, and they hung around with Michigan in their opener, which should give them confidence. The jury is still out on the North Texas Mean Green, as they had a cupcake season opener and are still trying to figure out a consistent rotation. On the road or not, Buffalo should cruise with another dominating showing from Williams.

  12. But Oct. 18 was the day.

"That was kind of interesting because all the presidents of the 14 Conference USA schools were together in Dallas for their fall meetings," Stewart said. "They were together on Sunday the 17th and on Monday the 18th – in the room together – and then the night of the 18th it's learned that six are leaving, including North Texas, and their president (Dr. Neal J. Smatresk) was the chair of the Conference USA executive committee. That's what happens on Oct. 18, and that therefore sets off a chain reaction and that's where we are now."

The six, which were announced as future members of the AAC in an Oct. 21 release, were UAB, FAU, Charlotte, North Texas, Rice and UTSA.

The move sent C-USA from 14 member institutions to eight, and left those remaining wondering what would be left of the league.

"It was just a little bit ironic, I think, for everybody to be in the room together on a Sunday and a Monday, and on Monday night it's learned that six are leaving. It was just tough timing," Stewart said. "Really what it does is it just causes everybody to kind of wonder who they can trust. That's not just in Conference USA – I think that's throughout the industry right now. I think there's real trust issues among a lot of people."

  13. The powers that be in college football appear on the verge of a compromise that will move their playoff from four teams to 12 starting in 2024.

The plan starts with six automatic bids. One for each of the so-called Power Five conferences — the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC — and one for the highest-ranked champion of the remaining five conferences, the so-called Group of Five. There would additionally be six at-large bids.

The top four seeds would get first-round byes. Seeds 5-8 would host 9-12 on their respective campuses, with the winners advancing. The playoff would create more access, more excitement, more interest in more regular season games and, of course, a lot more money.

Enter Mike Aresco, commissioner of the American Athletic Conference, who told the AP on Friday that he would “vigorously” oppose the expansion plan.

It’s not because it wouldn’t improve potential access for his league. It would. It’s not because it wouldn’t generate more money for his schools. It would. No, Aresco is upset that it sets aside auto bids for the five major conferences, no matter how good their champions are. He calls it “privilege.”

  14. TCU’s approach to finding its next football coach includes the equivalent of asking Elon Musk if he will give them $10 million in cash or bitcoin.

The worst thing that will happen is Musk says no.

Even better, if the conversation never includes a direct request for the money you can always deny it.

That’s how TCU approached one of the most in-demand, exclusive, but still unavailable coaches: Chris Petersen.

According to sources, TCU reached out to the former Boise State and Washington coach not to directly ask the question, but just to see where Petersen is with everything.

TCU made Petersen tell them, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

  15. Futures qualifier Daciana Colon has committed to the University of North Texas.

I chose UNT because because the girls on the team and the coaches instantly felt like a family.”

Colon is a senior at Valor Christian High School, and she swims club for Denver Swim Academy. At the 2021 CHSAA Girls 5A State Championships, she placed eleventh in the 100 backstroke. At the Western Zone Senior Champs, she placed third in the 100-meter backstroke and fourth in the 200-meter backstroke,

Colon has USA Swimming Futures cuts in the 100 and 200 back. Her best short course times are:

    • 50 freestyle: 24.67
    • 100 freestyle: 52.63
    • 100 backstroke: 56.65
    • 200 backstroke: 2:03.19
    • 100 butterfly: 59.09

The University of North Texas announced in October that it would be joining the American Athletic Conference. Since 2013, UNT has been a member of Conference USA, a Division I conference. At the 2021 women’s C-USA Championships, UNT placed third. At that meet, Colon would’ve made the B final with her best time in the 100 backstroke, ahead of anyone else on the team.

With her best times, she would perform within a second in each backstroke event of the tenth-fastest swimmers in the program’s history.

Colon joins Gabriella Luna as a UNT recruit for the fall of 2022.

  16. UTEP Miners football have reached bowl eligibility thanks to leadership of head coach Dana Dimel, Director of Athletics Jim Senter and many others.

EL PASO – No one involved was under any illusions. The charge of taking UTEP athletics, specifically the football team, to respectability was an uphill battle. Director of Athletics Jim Senter saw something most didn’t at UTEP: Potential. He took the job in the fall of 2017, in the middle of a football season that would end with an 0-12 record and a vacancy at head coach.

Outsiders saw it as a dead end. El Paso is in a remote region of Texas. It is the only city in the state on Mountain Time. More people live across the border in Juarez than on the American side of El Paso. The previous coach, Sean Kugler, went 18-36 in his tenure from 2013-2017. Mike Price and Bob Stull were the only head coaches at UTEP to truly experience success.

UTEP athletics needed everything. It needed more money. It needed new coaches. It needed confidence. Senter, a man who helped instill those traits at The Citadel before taking the UTEP job, had a plan. He also had optimism.
