  2. Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield and several returning assistants received pay raises entering the 2021 season, although his staff will collectively make less than it did last season.

Silverfield will make $1.8 million this season, a $50,000 increase from his first year that was scheduled per the terms of his contract. His assistant coaches will make $2.67 million this season, according to documents obtained by The Commercial Appeal.

It's less than the $2.77 million the assistants made in 2020. However, that total was reduced by more than 12% due to the Memphis athletics department cutting costs stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Silverfield, his assistants and director of athletic performance Noah Franklin agreed to pay cuts that totaled $572,242.92.

  3. Every athlete has their favorite teams or players from other fields. For example, Stone Cold Steve Austin is a renowned pro-wrestler, but he definitely has a favorite NFL team.

Now, there could be more than one team ‘The Texas Rattlesnake’ likes to follow. However, as he resides in Texas, there are two popular choices for him.

Prior to becoming a pro-wrestler, Stone Cold wanted to become a pro-football player. He even played football at the University of North Texas in the 1980s. However, while he was a good player at the local and regional level, he couldn’t keep up with the players beyond that.

As a result, he didn’t chase his football dreams further and moved on to pro-wrestling!

  4. ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo announced Thursday that he has added Chuck Petersen and Ryan Crawford to the coaching staff.  Petersen will serve as the offensive assistant, while Crawford will coach the safeties.

Additionally, Niumatalolo announced that Jerrick Hallwill add defensive ends to his responsibilities and will now coach the entire defensive line, Joe Conigliomoves from defensive assistant to coach the strikers and the raiders, Va'a Niumatalolo moves from offensive assistant to defensive analyst and assistant director of football operations and defensive coordinator Brian Newberry will not coach a specific position, which will free him up to oversee the entire defense.

"We are very excited to welcome Coach Chuck Petersen and Coach Ryan Crawford to the Brotherhood," said Niumatalolo.  "We feel like we have hit home runs with both of them.  Coach Petersen is one of the elite option minds in the history of college football and brings to Annapolis a wealth of knowledge, particularly when it comes to Service Academy football.  Coach Crawford has coached at the highest level in the ACC.  He has extensive experience of recruiting quality student-athletes at Harvard and Wake Forest.  Most importantly, they are both men of Integrity and impeccable character.  They will develop young men of character and leadership – which is the vision of Navy Football."

Petersen was an assistant at the Air Force Academy for 17 years coaching the running backs (1990), wide receivers (1991-96) and quarterbacks/fullbacks (1997-06).  He was the primary play caller at Air Force from 1997-06 and served as the offensive coordinator from 2000-06.

Petersen won 12 Commander-In-Chief's Trophies, went to nine bowl games, won three conference championships and owned a 16-2 record against Army while an assistant at Air Force.

Since leaving Air Force, Petersen has served as the safeties coach at North Texas from 2007-10 and was the head coach at Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, Calif. from 2012-16 and at Hyde Park High School in Austin, Texas from 2017-21.

  6. LOGAN, Utah – LaMarcus Hicks has been named Utah State's cornerbacks coach, it was announced Wednesday by Aggie head football coach Blake Anderson.

Hicks owns 10 years of coaching experience in the college ranks following a two-year stint as a defensive back for the Detroit Lions, appearing in 12 games from 2007-08.

Prior to coaching at JSU, Hicks coached two years (2014-15) at North Texas. In his first season with the Mean Green, Hicks led the cornerbacks into record-breaking territory in 2014. North Texas had seven different defensive backs tally an interception, which was a school record for most DBs in a single season with at least one pick. Five of those seven were cornerbacks coached by Hicks. Two Mean Green cornerbacks had interceptions returned for touchdowns. Cornerback James Jones was named to the Conference-USA second team in 2014 as he was the second-leading tackler and led the team with nine PBUs.

What do you think are the keys to success on the football field?

First thing is controlling the controllables. Attitude and effort. Next most important thing is knowing what you are doing. Knowing the ins and outs of your assignments so you can play freely and not thinking about missing an assignment.

If there was a billboard with 5 of your traits on it which 5 traits would be up there?

Selfless, tough, accountable, disciplined, and hungry.

What sets you apart from other running backs?

My ability to catch the ball out of the backfield , and also line up in the slot and run routes that aren’t running back specific. Also my ability in the return game.

How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?

I take all challenges in my life and on the football field head on. I try to see them as opportunities to do better or push myself harder rather than just an obstacle.

  8. Coming off of a recovered 2021 season with five straight wins and a bowl appearance, the North Texas Mean Green are poising themselves to have a breakout season in 2022.  Head coach Seth Littrell was busy this past week working the recruiting pipeline and adding more young players to the Mean Green family for the upcoming season.

With spring practices set to start in less than a month, excitement and anticipation is building around the North Texas football program.  The Mean Green didn’t have to look too far to find five top notch signees and stayed entirely in the state of Texas to find the newest members of the February Signing Day class.  Three of the players hail from the DFW metroplex and two from the Houston area; four of the signees are coming straight out of high school while one is a JUCO transfer.  Seth Littrell and his staff were able to fill out three defensive players and two on the offensive side of the ball.

  9. LUBBOCK, Texas – This is a story that tries to answer a question: Can a high school guy make it as a college coach?

But before that question, this one: Does Joey McGuire still count as a high school guy? After all, perhaps he was more well known for the 14 seasons and three state championships at Cedar Hill, but he had spent the last five years on the staff at Baylor, first as tight ends coach under Matt Rhule and eventually as associate head coach and outside linebackers coach under Dave Aranda.

So, what exactly is the statute of limitations on being a high school coach vs. a college guy?

“You know that’s a really funny question,” McGuire said two weeks before his first official signing day at Tech. “Because at one point [at Baylor], my reps said, ‘You know, Joey, if you just go to the NFL as an assistant for one year, then you are no longer a high school coach. You are an NFL coach coming down to college. So, yeah, it is funny how people can get labeled.

“But what I would say first to everybody is this: I am a high school coach who gets to coach college football. That is just my DNA. And it’s one reason we are going to be successful here. I really believe I wouldn’t be here without my high school background. So, I’m going to wear that badge with pride. I think it is my DNA. I think it will help me relate with our players, but I think it will help us in recruiting, too. I’m going to carry that banner with pride.”

  12. Coach McCarney was offered and ultimately accepted another rebuilding job in November 2010.

“Like always, assistant coaches get opportunities,” McCarney said. “That’s what happened to me at Iowa, that’s what happened to me at Wisconsin, that’s what happened to me at South Florida, that’s what happened to me at Florida. And then I got a chance to be a head coach at North Texas where Hayden Fry had been many, many years before.”

This time, it was the University of North Texas in Denton.

The Mean Green were nowhere near as mean as the moniker intended when Coach Mac took over the job, as North Texas had no more than three wins every season since 2005.

“They were in the bottom 10,” McCarney said. “We took them to a bowl championship in 2013. Nine wins. We were voted the best team in school history last year. Then I rode off into the sunset and said ‘You know what? I could have never dreamed of the opportunities, the success and the wonderful memories I had in my time as a football coach.”
