  1. On Oct. 7, Marshall is scheduled to play football against Alabama-Birmingham, Old Dominion is scheduled to play football against Middle Tennessee and Southern Mississippi is scheduled to play football against Louisiana Tech.

Is scheduled is a loaded term.

Those games are scheduled by Conference USA. Marshall, ODU and Southern Miss are saying not so fast.

Welcome to the latest fallout from OU and Texas declaring allegiance to the SEC

With all the domino-effect realignment of Southeastern Conference expansion, Conference USA was gutted.

Six C-USA members are headed for the American Conference: Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Alabama-Birmingham, North Texas, Rice and Texas-San Antonio. Three more are headed for the Sun Belt: Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss.

The latter three don’t plan to wait. Marshall, ODU and Southern Miss declared they would join the Sun Belt this summer and play a Sun Belt football schedule in 2022.

Conference USA cited its bylaws and declared the defectors had to give at least 14 months notice. C-USA earlier this month even released a football schedule – with the Thundering Herd, Monarchs and Golden Eagles included.

Now Marshall has filed a lawsuit against C-USA, seeking a quick exit.

It’s all one big mess, and think of the uncertainty.

  2. Ole Miss football is expected to hire Purdue special teams coordinator Marty Biagi, according to multiple reports. Biagi has been with the Boilermakers for two seasons, beginning in 2020. Prior to his time with Purdue, Biagi served as North Texas’ special teams coordinator from 2017-19 and was with Notre Dame in 2016 as a special teams analyst.

Biagi will replace Jeremy Springer at Ole Miss, who recently left to join the Los Angeles Rams’ staff. Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin hired Springer away from Marshall earlier in February.

“We just had a couple of lapses and when you're playing North Texas, they take advantage of any mental lapses, they're a championship level program for a reason,” FAU head coach Dusty May said. “They're extremely disciplined, extremely physical, hats off to them, they earned the win.

"We just have to continue to get better and hopefully by being in this position, we'll use this and refer back to it later to find a way to win one of these rock fight games.”

Nick McDevitt, Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

McDevitt's crew finished 3-13 in 2020-21 league play and ended that season on a seven-game losing streak. And with limited experience in a deep league -- seven players in the current rotation are underclassmen -- it made sense that Middle Tennessee would receive the fewest votes in the league's preseason poll. Well, McDevitt's squad has entered this week in first place in CUSA's East division. The Blue Raiders have orchestrated this turnaround with a strong defense: Per KenPom, they have forced turnovers on more than one-fifth of their league opponents' possessions, the top mark in the league.

In the running: Grant McCasland, North Texas Mean Green
McCasland entered the week in first place in CUSA's West division via his team's 3-point barrage. (Some 42% of the team's shots are 3s, and it has connected on 38% of those attempts.)

  6. In high school, Joe excelled in many things, not the least of which were debate and baseball. He was proudly the best one-armed pitcher for the Mexia Blackcat Baseball Team, pitching one infamous no-hitter game his senior year. He was a letterman in golf, tennis, baseball, and softball, although admittedly the competition was not really that stiff. Nonetheless, he found time to serve as President of the Student Body, was Salutatorian of his graduating class and was the State Declamation Champion of debate in 1950.

Joe’s impact did not stop there, as he ventured to college at North Texas State College (now University of North Texas). At North Texas, he served in many capacities, including President of the Student Body (1956), Rush Chair of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and President of the Debate Club. North Texas honored him with the highest recognition of the Green Glory Award in 2000 and as an Outstanding Alumni that same year.

Having majored in political science, Joe realized he might need to pursue a more lucrative career and decided to go to law school at the University of Texas. While there, he served as Mid-Law Class President, was a Texas Goodfellow, a Texas Cowboy (overseeing the honored tradition of the Longhorn cannon), and was on the Honor Council. During his third year in law school, he was recognized by the Supreme Court of Texas as the Outstanding Advocate in the moot court finals.

While finishing up law school, Joe ran and was elected State Representative for the Counties of Limestone, Falls, and Freestone. While in the Texas Legislature, Joe met the beautiful Alice Jean Sundberg, former twirler for the Longhorn Band, whom he married on August 20, 1960. Together they served the community of Mexia in many capacities and were the proud parents of two children, JoAl Cannon Sheridan, a lawyer following in his footsteps, and Thure Cannon, a well-respected lobbyist and former Capitol staffer in the state legislature. After the passing of Alice Jean, Joe later remarried Debra K. Goodwin in the year 2000, and enjoyed her company until his passing.
