  1. Yeah, but there are 200 odd D1 basketball schools that aren't FBS schools. Maybe a better metric would be percentage of budget allocated to basketball? I doubt there's and easy source for that so it has some problems for the discussion too.
  2. Maybe Kermit isn't the right guy, but there is some very recent history of a top level CUSA coach having success in the SEC...
  3. Based off what I saw and overheard at home games this season I think there would have been a positive bump in the win column and we don't finish dead last, but probably get bounced in the first round of the conference tournament. We will never know for sure of course, but I think we would have improved the record some.
  4. First question: No, I'll always look to win clean rather than dirty. Second question: Yes, he was a good hire for SMU. Their culture doesn't have the same aversion to winning dirty.
  5. Apology accepted. ? "Secondly" that's not how it works in the sports world and you should know that. Coaches and ADs or GMs in the pros are fired as a normal course of business. They are rarely fired 'for cause' and you still owe them the money subject to the stipulations in the contract. I sincerely hope you weren't as much a failure in one of your major metrics as Benford, but I don't think your situation is exactly analogous to the major sports world.
  6. I'm not sure committed is the word I'd use. It may apply, but I think 'taking a chance' would also work and might be a better fit. Or TCU? The frogs have had their scandals too, though nothing on the level of Baylor of course.
  7. While it's not always easy to get the nuances I took your post as confrontational and if you're going to call out 90 there are loads of other posts far more ripe for questioning. Since you chose that post out of all of the others I took your meaning to include that your questioning was based out of issues with that post.
  8. Let's look at the post you quoted: "If he gets his degree, he will be eligible immediately next year." This is a fact. Is there something here that you disagree with? "He isn't going to want to spend his final season on a team struggling to rebuild." This is an opinion, but a fairly reasonable one. It's not unusual for talented graduates to want to try someplace new. This seems to be more often the case when a losing team is in the rebuilding process or a player feels like they aren't getting the playing time they want/deserve. Combs is very talented and it's unlikely next year's team will be competing for a conference title. "He will have options in the WCC, the AAC and several other conferences that aren't P5s, but are huge steps above CUSA. That will raise his profile for professional contracts. Maybe not NBA, but definitely overseas contracts for really good money." This is another opinion, but once again a fairly reasonable opinion. It might be a stretch for some of the teams in those conferences, but Combs is pretty talented and playing well at a higher level conference would likely help his pro prospects. I guess I'm not seeing why you had such a problem with that post.
  9. There is more evidence? Belief I can see, I'm curious what evidence there is of that.
  10. And we will agree to disagree that giving a coach every season included in his contract is holding someone accountable.
  11. No, he waited until 40 some odd days were left on a contract. He made the easiest, safest play possible by doing it right after the season ended. That's not holding someone accountable l, that's just tidying up the books on a person's account.
  12. ? Maybe I'm just not seeing because I'm on a mobile version of the site?
  13. I see way less blatant dishonesty in these comments than the infamous Northern Arizona line put out by RV. Did WB spin it to his benefit? Yes, and no matter how he played his hand he would be spinning it. I'll also disagree with you about the recruiting position a last place team leaves the next coach. That coach will either be a good recruiter or he won't and I don't think this year's finish will play a major role in that. The last five years? Yeah, they will play some role, but it's always up to the current coach to sell his program. I think the bigger misstep was not canning Benford earlier. WB and I are always going to disagree on that point.
  14. You do know you're on an internet message board right? Lame griping takes many forms and positions here, just like most online communities...
  15. I read the report as well. It seemed as though your position was that he had fixed those "little things". I don't know that he has and it sounds like neither do you. I was honestly wondering if I missed some news about that. I think the department was worse than I thought before reading the report, but I'd be both surprised and disappointed if he didn't get some advance information during the later stages of his hiring process. In the case of Benford WB had a gimme decision where he could show that the same old things won't be allowed under his leadership. It's a missed opportunity, and one he won't get back. I'd guess WB did his share of political hoop jumping at most of his career stops before now. I'm sure that some of them are different, but he's had a chance to prepare for jumping through them. I'm sure that some of them suck, but that's one reason why he gets paid the big bucks.
  16. I'd also accept 3+ years. As much as I wanted Benford gone sooner rather than later by allowing it to drag out 5 full seasons UNT showed it's fine with the destruction of the program. I think the program is in a markedly different place if Benford has been replaced even as late as his second season...
  17. Perhaps we do, but in terms of the grand scheme those are little things in comparison to the ruining of a "money sport". While I think we can agree it's important I still think that doesn't have to be an either/or proposition. Since you seem to be up to date on the locker and equipment issue, which sports were affected and have they announced the issue has been corrected?
  18. You mean he can't find time to fix all the little stuff that's broken and deal with the giant albatross of a MBB coach? I don't think it's an 'either/or' proposition.
  19. What I didn't like was WB saying he's not a patient guy. Uh, dude, you just let Tony Benford continue his program crushing descent for the entire season. That's pretty damn patient, IMO. Too patient.
  20. AD (department) is crossing his name off the hit list ala Billy Madison? question, no info
