  1. N.M. orders 500 talking urinal cakes

    Associated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. - New Mexico is taking its fight against drunken driving to men's restrooms around the state. The state has ordered 500 talking urinal cakes that will deliver a recorded anti-DWI message to bar and restaurant patrons who make one last pit stop before getting behind the wheel.

"Hey there, big guy. Having a few drinks?" a female voice says a few seconds after an approaching male sets off a motion sensor in the device. "It's time to call a cab or ask a sober friend for a ride home."

Transportation Department spokesman S.U. Mahesh said the urinal cakes are a way to reach one group that's a target of state safety campaigns. Men commit about three times as many drunken-driving infractions as women.

The devices, manufactured by New York-based Healthquest Technologies Inc., were invented by Richard Deutsch. He said there's no other device like it on the market.

"The idea is based on the concept that there is no more captive audience than a guy standing at a urinal," Deutsch said. "You can't look right and you can't look left; you've got to look at the ad."

Public awareness campaigns in New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Australia have used the devices, as have commercial advertisers.

In New Mexico, the device uses the state DWI slogan "You drink, you drive, you lose."

Some Albuquerque bars installed the devices this week, and the state plans to distribute them to Santa Fe bars and restaurants as well as establishments in Farmington, Gallup and Las Cruces.

The state spent $21 for each talking urinal cake for the pilot program but will ask bars and restaurants to pay for future orders if the idea catch on, Mahesh said.

The cakes have enough battery power to last about 3 months.

    Very interesting.

I would definately listen if I'm standing there and I hear a lady say "Hey there, big guy!" It's just one of those things that you don't hear everyday.

  2. THIS is why we need an all UNT sports bar in Denton.

    Absolutely. I couldn't agree more.

As I posted in another thread, Champps in Addison will be showing the game tonight.

Let's show up in force to show them how North Texas supports businesses that support North Texas.

I'll be there with 2 friends watching the Mavs and North Texas at the same time and drinking cold beer! Doesn't get much better than that.

  3. Not sure which sports package on DirecTV you have to have to get it, but the game is on MASN Ch. 626. It is also on ESPN Full Court (Ch. 785).

Does anyone know of a good sports bar that'll have the game on? The Mavericks are playing Houston at 7:00 on Thursday night as well, so it's a great night to hit up a sports bar.

    Thanks for the help.

  4. Staubach should not be honored by UNT.. he has never had an affiliation with this university, i'm not sure he even knows this university exsists, and besides the idea is just strange.. that would be like us playing Pitt and them honoring Mean Joe Green, it just doesn't make any sense? With the exception of Jackie Robinson, i've never seen another team honor another team's former player.. Now if we decided to do an extended halftime or pregame ceremony honoring people in our armed forces (past and present), I think that would be a very nice touch and I believe the people who support the Navy would really appreciate it too

I was at a Mavericks game a couple of years ago and it was David Robinson's final regular season game in Dallas. He was honored at halftime with a video presentation, and then got a standing ovation. I thought it was a great tribute to someone who has done great things for the game.

  5. Wasnt there a sunbelt tourney each year and it was in a different locale, and all toruney teams played each other until their was a champion. the super pit hosted it a few years back.

Yes, back when there were 11 basketball playing conference teams, we hosted the tournament.

This year, there are 13 basketball playing conference teams. The first-round is being played at campus sites this year, with the top 3 teams getting a bye. The next 5 (seeds 4-8) host seeds 9-13. The 5 winners plus the 3 byes go to Lafayette (the host this year) for the remainder of the tournament.

The Sun Belt has never had its tournament like this before, but other conferences do this as well. I believe this is how the Southland tournament is done.

  6. Why isn't anybody talking about the missed free throw with 2.0 seconds left.

True, we hit the 2nd one to go up by 1. But... if we make the 1st one, we are up 1, and we should miss the 2nd free throw on purpose since UNO had no timeouts left. This would have definately caused a frantic shot from beyond half court.

Now, I don't think we should have called timeout, but it all could have been averted by hitting the first free throw.

  7. I have no idea how much this would cost or if this has been brought up before...

Would it be possible before the kick off to have gmg.com on the megatron as a sponsor before kickoff, as fans and students are coming into the stadium? Could we start a donation drive so when the season starts we might be able to do this? Imagine the sound of something like "gomeangreen.com presents the 2007 starting line up...."

Like I said I have no idea of what this would cost, but I think it could really help spread the word about this forum to students/alumni who want to connect to the university. Personally, I don't know of a better source of information about what's going on at UNT (Although I'm not sure how accurate all of the info is :P ), and I know tons of others want to find more. For an avid fan, meangreensports.com just doesn't cut it.

Essentially we'd be killing two birds with one stone. Get more people connected to this forum and get them more involved with the university, while at the same time paying a sort of donation to the athletics department.

Sounds like a great idea if the Athletic Department is willing to do the promo.

  8. Tail-gate...???..... buy a thermometer!! The local paper printed on the first page today that the avg temp here for Jan. was 38. We saw 70 degrees only one afternoon and not many days made it to 60 and they were 20+ days ago. Late evenings have been terrible. I will bet Denton is about the same.

Weather.com is saying a high of 48 degrees and sunny skies in Denton tomorrow. Should be pretty comfortable compared to what we've been dealing with.

  9. We did not run up the score on them. Not by a long shot. Our bench players started to rotate in the game with 7 - 10 minutes left and by 4 or 5 minutes we had the entire 2nd and 3rd string on the floor. Our back ups took it to Troy, continued scoring 2's and 3's, drove the ball to the basket (Jackson had nice drive or two), and out rebounded them. You cannot blame your bench for continuing to score. Great game guys!

I agree. We had our bench players in well before Troy did.

Some of those guys only get a few minutes a year of game action and deserve to be able to play hard down to the final buzzer. For them, this will be there only opportunity in college basketball to play 5-7 minutes of game action. They had career nights!

This is a small reward to them for working their butts off in practice all year.

  10. In my mind, there are 2 types of showboating:

    1. An act by yourself, to bring attention to yourself, to celebrate an individual play.

    2. A team celebration

I have no problem with a team celebration. Athletics are supposed to be passionate and exciting, and you should be able to celebrate with your team after a win or even after a great play.

I really do dislike it when a player makes an individual play, then pushes away his teammates, to do an individual celebration. He doesn't even think about the fact that if his teammates didn't do their jobs, he wouldn't have the opportunity to celebrate.

  11. Bonfire,

I expect you to be at the game sitting with us. Ill be the one in a green wig with big glasses on and a tie most likely. We'll think of some creative chants together

Sorry man, didn't get back on to GMG until just now. Otherwise, I would have been there next to you screaming. I had to go to work for a meeting and then drove to the game from work.

  12. First off, let's not turn this thread into a bashing of Jones and/or Slinker.

With that said, however you feel about the current state of the team, it's time to show your SUPPORT IN PERSON at the Super Pit tonight when OUR Mean Green take the court against Troy.

Game starts at 7 PM, don't be late!

After all, shouldn't all of the true Mean Green fans support all of our athletic programs?
