  1. I don't know anything about Lieberman. However, greatness as a player doesn't always translate into the same as manager. Look at Ted Williams, first manager of the Texas Rangers. But, your AD is the judge of that. She is definitely a big name. If Capps wants the job, I'd take her in a heart beat. If you want winning basketball and are willing to support it, hire Capps. If you want to go to the NCAA tournament, hire Capps.
  2. For those interested in this stuff (and possibly out of the area), here are a couple of nice articles appearing in today's Fort Worth Star-Telegram. http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/story/536217.html http://www.star-telegram.com/arlington_new...ory/536132.html Here is a super column by Jim Reeves at the S-T. It was on the front of the sports section. Scott Cross is a compelling story. http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/column...ory/533372.html
  3. Thanks to all the classy guys on this board who have made their posts! Like just about any board, you have a few nuts, but you are loaded with good sports and sportmen. Thank you for your good wishes at this time for Scott Cross and our team. Me, I set-aside my local prejudices when the time comes and root for all Texas teams. That's my default position and rule of thumb. We all know what it means to go against #1 seed Memphis and their towering giants. But, hell, we are IN. That's what freakin' counts. Forever more, we don't have to read all the sports reports writing, "never made the NCAA tournament in school history." The MONKEY IS OFF OUR BACK. That's over...finished. The publicity is fabulous in the Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram today. The Morning News has a picture of Scott Cross at the top of their front page cutting the nets. Absolutely beautiful. We Maverick fans are just soaking this up. You guys have been there (twice, I think), so you know the elation. Bless Scott Cross, and bless every member of our squad. Play hard on Friday; you have nothing to lose.
  4. The only thing I don't get right now about the admin is why they have delayed with your upcoming new business building. We both got approval to use tuition revenue bonds in the last legislative session for major buildings: UNT got something like $50 million for what is to be a $60 million business building, UT Arlington got $70 million for what is going to be a $110 engineering research building. So, these bonds were approved at exactly the same time; yet, the engineering building (with a science component) will break ground this summer (08), but it looks like your business building won't get started until around summer 09. And, engineering/science buildings are technically more complicated than something like a business building, e.g., labs, etc. I don't see why the business building isn't breaking ground this summer. This is the question I would be asking. Also, with the cost of construction going up, you get a little less one year later. (Granted, you will still endup with a helluva building.)
  5. I've always thought the Great White Donor was a dream...not going to happen. You guys are gonna have to do things along the lines of what Dallas Green is talking about, and that includes a student fee. The student fee is key, I think. Of course, you can probably pick-up more donations, but those are going to be supplements or icing once the project takes off. But, your admin is having real, detailed architect plans made. That tells me they are serious. If they are doing that, I wouldn't lambast them too hard: the project IS moving forward.
  6. It wasn't crap. The University isn't insane enough to give one of its most successful, popular coaches "crap." Trust me.
  7. Yes, but I'd rather not discuss it on an internet site; I've got nothing but good things to say about Donna Capps and the credit she was to the University. Also, 2 NCAA appearances pretty much speaks for itself. I think Donna is a great person and great coach, and she would be a real catch for you guys.
  8. If you can get her, I would DEFINITELY recommend Donna Capps. Who knows?....maybe she misses coaching and would like to do it again without having to move far away. I'd check the history of assistant coaches she might bring, however. Enough said.
  9. Screaming Eagle, I look at UNT and UTA as peer institutions, which they are. I don't think we at UTA view UNT in the way you describe. We may respect you; I would say "yes" to that. Peer institutions should not be confused with identical institutions. We are not. While there is some overlap, our profiles (academic offerings, etc.) are different. Your student body is bigger, but our research presence is roughtly twice as large. UT Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, can also be regarded as our in-state peers. An in-state aspirational peer for both of us might be the University of Houston.
  10. As well they should be. If I were a betting man, I'd put money on OSU...in Stillwater, too. Good luck to you guys the rest of the way, too.
  11. Not me. I take it one game at a time and also realize the season has a long way to go. I am enthusiastic, however. 8-0 and having just knocked-off Wichita State at their place in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,400+ are not small accomplishments. We won't win them all. And, Sam Houston and SFA are also tearing up the place.
  12. We share the same birthday. Happy b-day.
  13. The game was a lot of fun. Ya'll brought a real good crowd, which helped make the atmosphere spirited and competitive in the stands, too. One of the advantages of Texas Hall is that a crowd that's not necessarily even very big can make the place rock. (Hopefully nobody noticed any dead\rubber chickens, or whatever.) It will be with mixed emotions when we eventually leave Texas Hall for a Special Events Center, e.g., maybe something such as is at UALR. Towards the middle of the 2nd half, it did look like we might completely take you to the wood shed, but then you came back and made it interesting at the end. Fortunately, our guys were poised and did what they had to to ice the win. I just hope that your coach doesn't stop scheduling us after these 2 wins. Believe it or not, this little message has taken 30 minutes to this point. Here I am, a guy doing the guy thing (the critical task of making a post on a college sports board), and my wife keeps calling me in to the kitchen to help clean up behind her and to mix some potato dish. Where is her sense of priorities?
  14. Should the Texas Hall/Davis Hall parking lot be full, your close parking choices are over and you are going to walk a bit. If so, I'd proceed farther on Nedderman, which will "elbow" (or turn) north. Once you are going north, you may either 1) turn left on Greek Row Dr. and park at the tennis center, or 2) cross Greek Row Dr. and park on the north side of the Maverick Activities Center ("the MAC"). (You will see a some construction activity north of the MAC.)
  15. Dude, don't take me too seriously. I don't think most do. Yeah, sure, I would really enjoy a win tonight, but this all just fun stuff. See some of you Meanie Greenies at The Hall!
  16. yeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I like it. short. concise. expresses an emotion, but not overly serious. Let me try. UNT Sucks!
  17. Oldtime, Duck was jerking your chain, and not making a lie. You really didn't have to feel compelled to come-out and list your professional accomplishments to prove him "wrong." Most people probably give you the benefit of the doubt that you have done something with your life......even if you were passed-over for promotion by the accounting department.
  18. Your account has bits of accuracy, but, with all due respect, it doesn't capture the essence and what happened. For the history buffs, I paste in what I once wrote on utamavericks.com Earl Rudder, president and chancellor at A&M was a great man and patriot. He led the charge up the cliffs at Normandy in World War II. He was a tough figure who made tough decisions. The tradition-bound Aggies were loath to admit women in the 1960s, but they were suffering and had low enrollment. Just like "only Nixon could go to China," only Rudder - or a person of his stature - could get stubborn A&M to admit girls. The Aggies ran-off the previous president/chancellor for wanting to admit girls. Well, that "revolutionary" decision to become co-ed launched an era of growth for Texas A&M. There is a statue of Earl Rudder on the campus today. HOWEVER, Rudder's great blunder - quietly acknowledged and regretted by A&M in later years - was to let Arlington State to leave their system. When the Arlington delegation was sitting in Governor John Connally's office to press their case for leaving A&M for UT, the governor could not believe it. Right in front of the delegation, he picked up the phone and called Earl Rudder, who confirmed for the governor that he wasn't doing anything for the Arlington campus, and they could go. Rudder was completely preoccupied with the problems in College Station. Well, that was that, and Governor Connally signed the bill in 1965 moving Arlington State. The name was changed to The University of Texas at Arlington in 1967. When you read the history of the A&M System on their system website, they omit the fact that Arlington State, in their system for almost 50 years, was once in and left. It's not something they can brag about; it was dumb. So, A&M lost a major educational and economic (and political) presence in North Texas, and now their system is made-up of A&M and the seven dwarfs. Since then UT Arlington prospered and is now on a trajectory of becoming a major research university, having done $40 million in research in 2006 and with the goal of reaching $100 million in about a decade. In fact, ground will be broken in 2008 on about $170 million of new engineering and science research facilities. UT Arlington has become indispensable to the region and state.
  19. Yes, I would be very optimistic if I were green.
  20. I do know there are no reserved seats. For anyone interested in these sorts of campus things, be sure and drive by the brand new Maverick Activities Center ("the MAC"). This is a facility that is roughly equivalent to your recreation center. The MAC is north of Texas Hall, across from the Architecture Building...on Nedderman Dr., which is the street that runs behind Texas Hall. It's beautiful, and I think you will see why it is considered a "signature" building. Also, if you are waiting outside the front of Texas Hall (east side) for a few minutes, check-out the small sunken courtyard between Texas Hall and Davis Hall...this would be on the south side of Texas Hall. This was once a non-descript space, but has recently been made into something beautiful. The water feature is quite unique. This sunken courtyard is part of the brand new University Club, which you may be able to see in to. The glasswork inside the University Club is quite spectacular, and is a product of our faculty.
  21. Even the night before Thanksgiving, this may very well be the highest attended home game of the season. You will bring your people, and we will have extra Mavericks there.
  22. Hell I'd be intimidated. It's not safe. Yeah, it's like you are watching a ballet.
  23. Also, we are playing like absolute crap. This is going to be an easy win for the greenies.
  24. Good point. And, there probably have been many others. Get the word out to your players that they need to be careful when they lunge for balls anywhere near the edge of the court. They need to slow it down and look around to keep themselves safe.
  25. Duck, are you okay? You are being awfully nice to the greenies. BTW, in all my many years of watching b-ball on The Stage, I have never seen anyone get hurt because of the set-up. Somehow, it is the spector of such an occurence that gets imaginations going. Yes, I think it does sometimes weird-out players when they first step out there. Yeah, there were some great NTSU games at The Stage back in the Blakley era, which - up until perhaps now - was your b-ball hay day. Always close and crazy. (Like last year in Denton.) I recommend sitting either in the west stands, where you are on top of the action, or in the balcony. The floor seating has never appealed to me.
