Thought I would share the numbers

     Defense allowed avg per game

    2022 (Bennett 4-2-5)

    Rushing - 197 yards

    Passing- 262 yards

    total - 460 yards

    Points- 31.71 per game

    2023 (Caponi)

    Rushing - 255 yards

    Passing- 221 yards

    total - 476 yards

    Points- 37.08 per game

Additional differences: Tougher strength of schedule with the move to the American Conference, a Power 5 opening opponent, and the first triple option this team has faced.

What are your thoughts before I share mine?

My thoughts are that if we give up 5-6 points less this year, we beat Memphis and Navy are are 7-5 heading to a bowl.

You rated the secondary too high. That B- should have been a D.  They were a major part of the pitiful defense by allowing major chunk pass completions, rampant penalties, and little run support.

    Morris was not an F.

We were less than 40 total points away from being 10-2.   Think about that...

Yes, he has let the defense fail and the defensive coaches slide.  I would give him a C+ now and C- if he fails to make DC change.

The coaching failures were the reason for that 40 point deficit. Think about that…

In Seth’s first year we won 5 games. At that time 5 win teams were invited to fill bowl spots based on team academics. North Texas, as I understand it, was the top academic team in the nation among 5 win teams.  So yes, Virginia, there may still be a chance.

Those days are long gone. We are not going to get an invitation bc our APR is terrible now.

I was watching the highlights from the Tulsa game and it could have been the same highlight from ever game it seems.  I am not sure who is out of position or what happens.  The play I am talking about is when the other team running backs goes to the outside and there is no one near him.  This play has been run over and over and it usually gets large amounts of yards if not a td.

I was watching the Tulsa highlight and I am not sure if the de or lb gets sucked into the inside.  I was taught a 100 years ago that you dont let the running back get outside instead force to the inside where you have more help.    As many times as we have seen it we can never stop it.  It usually happens in the first half of the game.  I dont know what changes in the second half but the play is not as successful in the second half.

Any experts know what is going on when that happens?  I dont want to hear from the DC because if he could fix it i would not be asking the question.

I think this defense forces them outside to be picked up by the safety. But it isn’t working. I agree that very often we see the OLB get trapped by the OT/TE and then there is no one else to make the tackle or it’s one on one with a blown tackle or bad angle. Eleven games in and we see the same mistakes.

I think this is what Morris means when he says complementary football.  It’s also a reason why PB’s defense improved in year two (SL ran the ball which led to fresher defenses and less possessions for the opposition).  As explosive as the offense has been, they’ve come up short at times when the defense made the occasional stop.

We gave up more points in year two of PB’s defense. The first year was around 5 points better. Not sure where this false narrative started…🤦🏻‍♂️

Ahh, so the MOD’s find my comments calling some on this board a-holes for making fun of a man’s birthmark so terrible that they remove my posts but leave this crap on here?  Wow

Guess I will now receive a ban or warning for calling them out for leaving this shit on here.

I didn’t get a chance to see your post but I would like to clarify that I wasn’t really trying to make fun of Morris, but was genuinely perplexed what was going on with his neck. I probably didn’t word it very elegantly, as I had come home after an all day wine festival so my filter wasn’t fully functioning. I guess the mods were not too happy with it since it looks like it is also deleted. 🤷🏻‍♂️

They lost multiple players who contributed significantly to last year’s mediocre defense late, changed schemes, moved up in conference, and I’ve seen enough missed tackles and blown assignments to know it’s not just coaching.

This is a fair argument. I don’t see that it was “destined” to be worse. It wasn’t so great last year so it would have been reasonable to assume that the new staff could have hurdled a low bar like improving from a bottom 20 defense. Instead it is dead ass last in the country.  If we expect a bottom 20 defense to be worse, then to me that means we are questioning the quality of the hire of the defensive coaching staff. I was definitely questioning bringing in someone at that salary with zero coordinating experience above D3, but still didn’t expect a last place defense. (UAB is equally terrible so hopefully our offense hangs 50 on them and they take the last place slot from us.)

Many people have pointed to the players we lost but every team loses players, even late like we did with Nixon, who was the biggest loss for us, as his results at Auburn prove. The coaches didn’t ensure that they had the personnel to run the defense they wanted to install. That’s a massive fail and Morris has all but confirmed they messed up in that area.
