The best part about recapping last season for the University of North Texas is there are only four losses to digest for the entire season. Even better only one was by double digits, to a Georgia team that was supposed to contend for the SEC West title until half the team apparently contracted the Ebola virus. That game also featured a Mean Green punt block that tied the game in the third. Oh, you want to see another highlight from that game? How about a Brelan Chancellor 99-yard kickoff return??? So yes, even though moral victories are like hooking up with your crush's sister, there were a ton of positives from that game. Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder was in a peculiar situation just four years ago with a BCS title-winning coach sitting in his office. Forget the fact that he was still piecing together his plans for his football program, which at the time was just a year old, because he was more worried about the man in front of him — Larry Coker. Coker, who at the time was nine years removed from winning a national championship at Miami, was in Wilder’s office in Norfolk, Virginia for some advice on how to start a football program. A year earlier, Wilder and Old Dominion put the wheels in motion on the school’s new program, and Coker was looking to do the same at Texas-San Antonio. Weird coming from a coach who was once at the pinnacle of college football? Wilder thought so. I was sitting with Jerry Briggs of the San Antonio Express-News at Conference USA media day this week and heard UNT coach Dan McCarney talk a little about the Mean Green’s loss to UTSA. Mac was gracious as always and gave Jerry some material that he turned into a nice little story on where everyone was picked in the preseason poll. With realignment settling, C-USA schools can find rivals
Harry posted a topic in Mean Green Football
A few schools have a head start in that regard. UTEP and Rice have been playing annually since 1996 when they were in the WAC together and both jumped to C-USA in 2005. Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss have some history that will now be enhanced with Southern Miss moving to the Western Division, while Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee were geographic rivals in the Sun Belt who are now reunited in C-USA. As one of the nation's newest programs, the fourth year team at UTSA doesn't have much history on its side, but can develop some quickly. "I'll say it will be Rice, North Texas," Roadrunner offensive lineman Scott Inskeep said. "It's all still fairly new competition, but we can all sense it coming. There's going to be rivalries with all the Texas schools. We're still all getting to know each other." "Not everybody can jump on a plane and fly; our fans can drive to Houston," UTSA coach Larry Coker said. "North Texas could be a good rivalry for us." I consider Bleacher Report to be a garbage source, but I had a UTSA fan send me this today. I hate how they have garnered enough respect to be considered in this at all (even though it is Bleacher Report). This season is an important for us. We need to capitalize off of last seasons success and contend for the Conference Title, or I'm afraid we could lose some serious footing in the recruiting game. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2103158-predicting-the-top-25-college-football-programs-of-the-next-10-years/page/3 Beat Texas GMG

When Arizona scheduled three games with UTSA a few years ago, the Wildcats probably didn’t sign up for this big of a challenge. Seriously. This season will be just the fourth in UTSA football history, but the Roadrunners have already positioned themselves as a power in Conference USA. Larry Coker’s team has won 15 games over the past two seasons and has scheduled tough non-conference games against the UA and Oklahoma State. Yet, here are the Roadrunners — very possibly Arizona’s toughest early season test — in year four with 10 returning starters on defense and nine on offense. The Roadrunners traveled to Tucson last season and lost 38-13. This year, Coker and UTSA get the Wildcats in San Antonio and it could be a different story. Nov 29th we're playing UTSA during the final stretch of the season.. Frankly I'm extremely worried we're gonna get our butts handed to us. Did some heavy researching and it looks like most of their team is gonna be seasoned juniors and seniors. That plus their insanely hard schedule will keep em on them pretty strong.. Personally I see this as a loss for Mean Green.. Thoughts?

Next years road game against UTSA in San Antonio really should be fun. This will be our first time to play there. I think we will bring a great crowd and if this past year is any indication there could be a lot on the line. We have some great alums in San Antonio who I know will be rolling out the red carpet. RV talked about making it a train game which would be awesome for our fans. GMG!

SAN ANTONIO — Decked out in hand casts, wrist tape and full pads, the UTSA Roadrunners summoned the type of enthusiasm Tuesday that has carried them through a long and successful season. Players sprinted from station to station. Coaches barked, ‘Let’s win a championship.’ Feeling the fever of the Conference USA title race, 65-year-old UTSA head coach Larry Coker executed a flying body bump with running back Evans Okotcha just after the team hit the practice field at 7:15 a.m. “The guys had good energy today,” Coker said. ”Of course, we had a shorter practice. The guys had a day off yesterday, which I think was good. I think our guys are going to be ready to play on Saturday.” Read more: http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2013/11/utsa-feels-the-championship-fever-leading-into-north-texas/

SAN ANTONIO, Tx - UTSA kicker Sean Ianno connected on a game-winning, 34-yard field with 14-seconds remaining to give the Roadrunners a 10-7 victory over Tulane in front of 24,606 at the Alamodome. Tulane was its own worst enemy today, committing a season-high 14 penalties for 111 yards, and giving up two crucial plays in the second half, including a 68-yard rushing touchdown that tied the game in the third quarter and a 62-yard pass play late in the game that set up the game-winning field goal. UTSA improved to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in league play. “My hat goes off to (UTSA) coach (Larry) Coker and his team,” Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said. “They played a very good football game. They played physical. It got a little chippy at times, but that is something that happens. I thought we did a good job for the most part, but we just couldn’t overcome all of our penalties and mistakes. Those things are self-inflicting. We just had guys who were eager and anxious. You just can’t do that. Tulane senior running back Orleans Darkwa rushed for a game-high 103 yards and one touchdown, but it was not enough. “We have two games to play. We have a two-game season now. We will play two good opponents, one at home and one on the road. We have to prepare. We will work hard this week, and get ready to hold senior day against UTEP.” Despite holding the Roadrunners to just seven points through the first three quarters, the Green Wave had a communication breakdown on defense during UTSA’s final drive, allowing Roadrunner wide receiver Seth Grubb to go virtually unnoticed down the right sideline for a 62-yard completion from quarterback Eric Soza with a just a little over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. SAN ANTONIO—In a flash of yellow flags, the Tulane football team saw a reversal of fate on Saturday. The result was stinging: the Green Wave lost control of its Conference USA title fate. Tulane needed to win out its final three games beginning with Saturday’s road game against UTSA in the Alamodome to win the West Division and secure a spot in the league championship game. Instead, the Green Wave lapsed into a two-game slide and couldn't conjure any of the mojo that helped it win close games earlier this season. The 111 Tulane penalty yards, a busted coverage late, and the Roadrunners’ game-clinching field goal with less than a minute to go spoiled all that. Tulane lost 10-7 in front of a raucous crowd of 24,606 that produced an earful of distracting noise. The Green Wave committed eight false-start penalties and the 111 total penalty yards were a season-high for Tulane. “We just couldn’t overcome the number of penalties,” Tulane coach Curtis Johnson said. “Too many penalties, too many mistakes.” There were none more costly than the final two false-start whistles. Tulane looked to be gathering that game-winning momentum when it started a drive with 9:42 to go and the score tied at 7. Quarterback Nick Montana, in his second start since separating his shoulder Oct. 5 against North Texas, was clicking off yards left and right. He found running back Rob Kelley over the middle for a 6-yard gain and then located Ryan Grant on the next play – a third down -- on a 5-yard strike to give Tulane a first down on the Tulane 48. A few plays later, Montana made a brilliant move to elude two tacklers in the pocket, side-stepping one and then backing away from the other just in time to find Kedrick Banks over the middle for a 25-yard gain. Tulane was positioning itself for the go-ahead drive, driving to win yet another tight Conference USA ballgame. Two plays later, the Green Wave was already on the UTSA 32 and with Lou Groza-winning kicker Cairo Santos, who has made two game-winning field goals this season, it was looking good for the Wave. I wanted to get your ideas and feedback regarding a trophy or designation that would be given to the Texas C-USA school that has the most wins among Texas teams in the conference. This would include North Texas, Rice, UTSA, and UTEP. Since all four of these teams would be playing in football every year, it would make it fun to say the one who wins the most games against Texas schools would get some sort of trophy or bragging rights. It could most certainly be applied to other sports but football is king in this state. I'm not sure if this is being done anywhere else with this many teams but similar games that come to mind would be the Bayou Bucket game in Houston that pits Rice against the University of Houston every year for bragging rights in Texas or the SMU/TCU battle for the Iron Skillet game. These are just the first two that come to mind to me; there may be more in other states. We have four great cities in the great state of Texas who are in our conference and I could envision getting the mayors of each respective city and various businesses behind this. Perhaps a Texas media outlet could get involved...or even Dave Campbells... we have some real creative minds on here so let's hear what you got! How much fun could we have with this every year -- I think about a nice trophy sitting in Apogee that shows we were the best in Texas for that particular year. The Texas connection is a big part of what makes this conference special to us (we are tied with the Big 12 at 4 teams in the state now) and we need to emphasize it as much as possible. GMG!

UTSA technically isn’t bowl eligible until next year. But UTSA coach Larry Coker said Monday that a bowl bid is possible with a strong finish. Coker also said UTSA’s home attendance could be a factor. North Texas (6-3, 4-1) and Rice (6-3, 4-1) are the other teams tied for first in the C-USA West. As the hottest team in the West with four straight wins, North Texas hosts UTEP (1-7, 0-4) on Saturday in another intra-division matchup. Rice, beaten last week by North Texas, has an open date. Wow man I am impressed with how Coker gets this team to come out and compete RIGHT OUT of the gate! 7-0 UTSA over UH in 1st Quarter.

@ New Mexico: W - but by no means automatic. What concerns me is that we, as a fan base, want this one so much that we're all calling it as a W. If the team thinks the same way, we'll get beat. vs OSU: L - loss, but a fun one. @ Arizona: W - lol yes a win. Don't ask. ALL signs point the other way, but I've had a gut feeling on this game for 2 years. @ UTEP: W - backup aggy QB doesn't overly concern me; we've faced some talented slingers. Will still be a tough-fought game in all facets. vs Houston: L - I think this game and the UTEP game are both 50-50. I wrote an L here, but I'm calling at least one win between the two. @ Marshall: L - Cato > UTEP QB. And Marshall in general is just more talented than us overall. I think Marshall is this year's San Jose State. vs Rice: L - I would love to call a win here, except I think Rice is the real deal. Sounds funny to say. vs UAB: W - only because it's @ home and homecoming. I don't think the score will be close, per se, but I would actually have this as a road loss. @ Tulsa: L - IMO Tulsa may not even be the best team in the division for 2013, but they know how to win. This will be a long shot for us. vs Tulane: W - I think Vegas will actually have us favored here. We'll see. @ UNT: L - this or UAB is our WTF loss of the year. I believe we are legitimately better, but I think they may put us on our heels a bit. If so, our fans will rage. vs La Tech: W - I think La Tech finishes ahead of us in the west, but we have their number. We can beat them. Kenneth Dixon is OP though. 6-6 read more: http://www.rowdytalk.com/showthread.php/3011-Official-2014-Win-Loss-Prediction-Thread
