  1. NCAA officials sent a letter to its membership Thursday noting its enforcement staff's pursuit of "potential violations" of the name, image and likeness compensation policy and emphasizing the need for schools to help investigations. The email came from Stan Wilcox, NCAA executive vice president of regulatory Affairs, and Jon Duncan, VP of enforcement. It said NCAA enforcement staff is "actively investigating potential abuses of NIL transactions and we'll allege any substantiated concerns as soon as possible." "We also constantly review new reports of tampering, recruiting inducements, impermissible benefits, impermissible recruiters and other related behaviors," the email said. read more: https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/34420323/ncaa-asks-member-schools-help-nil-violation-investigations
  2. North Texas After back-to-back nine-win seasons, North Texas is 14–21 in the past three seasons. Seth Littrell, whose contract runs through the end of 2023, has undoubtedly raised the profile of the program. UNT is a G5 program willing to pay—Littrell’s salary is between $1.3 million and $1.8 million. Its location near the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex also makes it attractive for up-and-coming coaches. Some sources say Litrell missed his window by not selling high and making a jump to the Power 5 after his initial success. read more: https://www.si.com/college/2022/08/19/ncaa-football-hot-seat-coaches-harsin-frost
  3. Overview: Offense The Mean Green will seek to build upon a strong running attack behind an experienced offensive line. Having produced the fifth-best rushing offense in 2021, at more than 230 yards per game, North Texas returns three running backs who accounted for almost 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Make no mistake: the running game will continue from last year to form the base of their 2022 campaign. The questions will arise when that ground game is challenged and another way to win is needed. The passing game may require time to develop at quarterback, but the receivers should be able to move the chains as a capable, if not explosive, part of the offense. If there is stability at quarterback, whether it be Aune or one of the others in a relatively deep quarterbacks room, this team can easily perform well enough to get to a bowl game once again. Built on a strong running game, the offense should be an entertaining team to watch in 2022. Defense This defense has had its share of ups and downs, from injuries last year to losses in the transfer portal this year. But North Texas gets a number of players healthy to start the 2022 campaign, players that will need to step up quickly to improve upon a difficult scoring defense (ranked 79th, at 27.5 points per game). The defensive line will be a point of concern, with losses in the transfer portal, but improved linebacker play should fortify the front seven overall. Senior Quinn Whitlock returns from injury to the “Eagle” position (a linebacker/safety hybrid) that also bolster a defense looking to improve overall. Any positives in the turnover department will help as well, as the team finished 70th nationally. Read more: https://mwwire.com/2022/08/11/unlv-football-first-look-at-the-north-texas-mean-green/
  4. I think he gets overlooked. He is doing an outstanding job with the LBs and was one of the top reasons KD decided to stay. Guy is also a tremendous recruiter. I agree that PB deserves a lot of credit for the defense but Jim is a big part of that. Everyone knows him from his days at Baylor but he also was defensive coordinator at SMU for 5 years.
  5. 2022 Season Outlook Last year was a success even though it was a losing one based on how it transpired. Littrell is still considered a coach with a ton of upside and the second half of last season showed that as he united his team to reach down and that they did. Even if the turn around did not come, he likely would have been safe still because of the upside he possesses. That being said, this will be one of his toughest coaching tests since coming to Denton with all of the attrition and the fact the upcoming schedule is a monster. Five of the six road games are against teams .500 or better from last year and are expected to be even better. The home portion is much easier with five of the six against some poor teams so the opposite of this home/road slate would have been ideal. The O/U win total is 6.5 and that looks to be right where it should be as it will take an upset or two on the road to get over this number. read more: https://mattfargo.com/articles.php?art=art56223

  7. Behind the aforementioned five are some options that should also be involved in the first-team rotation. Fifth-year seniors Junior Uzebu and Jacob Brammer (a North Texas transfer) have been competing at the backup tackle spots and sophomore Gage Pitchford has been competing at guard. Blazek said because of the versatility of Ashmore, Brammer and Castillo on the right side of the line, it’s possible that trio all plays at some point during the same game. Head coach Clark Lea, meanwhile, said he has witnessed a group that has practiced with an identity of toughness and finishing. “Over the next couple of weeks the first five will separate themselves. I think on the whole we still have eight guys that we’re looking at right now that could be a part of that,” Lea said. “We’re pleased with the young part of that unit and how they’re coming along and competing. read more: https://vucommodores.com/connecting-the-dots/
  8. Jason Bean is confident he’s the fastest player on the Kansas football team. When asked last week who was the speediest, the redshirt senior quarterback answered with no hesitation. “Me, without a doubt,” Bean said. So even after Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold said he expects junior Jalon Daniels to start at quarterback at the start of fall camp, Bean’s speed and athleticism could still come into play in other ways. Bean said he and offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki “haven’t really talked” about what his involvement with the offense could look like if he isn’t the starting quarterback. 9. News arrived concerning a former Texas football head coach early this week, indicating that he will be shifting his role from coaching to the broadcast booth. Former Texas head coach Tom Herman is reportedly set to join the CBS Sports broadcast team this fall. Herman’s first game as a color analyst with CBS Sports will reportedly come on Sep. 3, when the North Texas Mean Green out of Conference-USA takes on the SMU Mustangs out of the American Athletic Conference. Moreover, this is definitely an interesting shift in roles for Herman after he joined the Chicago Bears as an offensive analyst/special projects coach following his departure from Texas a couple of years ago. Herman wound up spending just one season on staff with the Bears before making this shift to the commentator booth. read more: https://hookemheadlines.com/2022/08/08/former-texas-football-hc-tom-herman-to-join-cbs-broadcast-team/
  10. How long until we see Littrell’s college running backs coach wandering around practices?
  11. North Texas – WR Jay Maclin The Mean Green require more explosiveness in the passing game to compete in Conference USA. As a team, North Texas only recorded 12 passing touchdowns last season. Maclin provides speed and big-play ability as a deep threat and after the catch. The Missouri transfer is one of the new faces in Denton hoping to jumpstart the offense. He spent two seasons at Missouri prior to arriving at North Texas. He redshirted in 2020 and missed 2021 with injury. read more: https://www.texasfootball.com/article/2022/08/09/one-key-newcomer-from-each-g5-program-in-texas-heading-into-the-2022-football-season?ref=article_preview_img
  12. This is a link to more information about our newly formed NIL. I had several PM's asking me about this and I figured I would put out this link for everyone that is interested in UNT doing something similar to us now that we are in the same conference. I think this same concept could work well for you. Good luck to you guys. https://www.ponysportsdtx.com/

  15. David Lee Markham, age 82, passed peacefully away in the arms of His Lord, surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, August 3, 2022. Dave was born on January 28, 1940 in Denison, Texas to Mary Elizabeth (Parker) Markham and Daniel Bevelon Markham. Dave was born and raised in Denison, Texas and graduated from Denison High School in 1958. He played baseball and football. He served as Class President, was voted senior favorite, participated in Texas Boys State and earned All District with the Denison Yellow Jackets Football team. After high school graduation, he attended Texas Tech University for two years before transferring to North Texas State University. Dave was the first person in his family to earn a college degree – Bachelor’s of Education. And later, Dave earned his Master’s of Secondary Education from North Texas State University, Denton, TX. While at Tech, Dave was a member of Delta Tau Delta and Saddle Tramps. His favorite memories of Texas Tech involved meeting Mary McMahon of Ft. Worth, TX, his loving wife of 61 years. After arranging an introduction and a few dates, Dave sweet talked Mary into wearing his “pin” and he put her sorority sticker on his car. They married on June 3,1961 at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, University Christian Church, Ft. Worth, TX. A five year career as a High School football coach in Van Alstyne and San Angelo under Emory Bellard led Dave to change his career and enter the clothing business in Dallas in 1964 and he never looked back. 16. 32. Grant Gunnell, North Texas (from Memphis) Gunnell is battling Austin Aune in a close battle for the starting job. The former Memphis and Arizona quarterback could give North Texas' offense a needed spark through the air. read more: https://athlonsports.com/college-football/college-footballs-top-50-impact-transfer-quarterbacks-ranked-for-2022
  17. American Athletic Conference (AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco didn't shy away from voicing his concerns about the state of college football and its future during his annual media day press conference. It's not news that numerous issues have raised flags in the realm of college football and college athletics since the end of the 2021-22 seasons. In fact, Aresco listed a heavy handful, including but not limited to conference realignment; name, image and likeness (NIL) deals; the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) potentially breaking away from the NCAA; and college sports becoming too professionalized. He called it a new and challenging era in college sports, something unprecedented and unsettling, having been years in the making. Now, Aresco sees collegiate athletics at a pivotal point. Conference realignment in the FBS "It's been in the news. It's sent shockwaves through the college sports landscape, boiled the water of college sports and continues to do so. It affected the AAC last year and may again, we don't know. Three of our members – UCF, Cincinnati and Houston – will depart the conference in July 2023. We appreciate their important contributions to our conference's legacy over the last decade and we'll enjoy having them compete in the American this season." read more: https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/college/university-of-cincinnati/2022/07/28/aac-commissioner-mike-aresco-speaks-numerous-issues-college-football-realignment-nil-fbs-ncaa/10173044002/
  18. The NIL era in college football has fully arrived. In June 2021, the Supreme Court ruled in NCAA v. Alston that the NCAA could no longer limit student athlete’s abilities to profit off of their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Most teams have already started taking advantage of this new landscape. For programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State, the NIL really only makes it easier for them to remain atop the recruiting class rankings on a yearly basis. However, for smaller programs, this new recruiting tool provides a much better opportunity to level the playing field. And now, the University of North Texas is getting in on the action. Per the Denton Record-Chronicle, former school athletic director Rick Villareal and UNT booster Don Lovelace are now working to establish a collective for the Mean Green athletic program. read more: https://www.yardbarker.com/general_sports/articles/north_texas_alumni_forming_nil_collective/s1_17068_37752815
  19. USF is becoming the latest program with a name, image and likeness collective through the launch of Fowler Ave Collective. The third-party organization — which went live Friday morning at fowleravenue.com — bills itself as a “private fan club” to support players. For monthly membership fees between $10 and $200, USF fans gain access to in-person and virtual gatherings with current players. Those players are then paid through the collective. USF quarterback Gerry Bohanon, the transfer from Baylor, has signed up as the Fowler Ave Collective’s first ambassador, according to the organization. As of last month, the recruiting website On3 counted more than 100 collectives that are already active or are expected to go live soon. The list includes Florida (the Gator Collective), Florida State (Rising Spear) and Alabama (High Tide Traditions), plus a handful of Group of Five programs such as SMU, Memphis and North Texas. 20. Head coach Dana Dimel said on Friday that they would continue to do so until around Aug. 15, 12 days before kickoff. At that time, the Miners will bring in a true scout team offense and defense to get the starters ready for the Mean Green. “Every day I go back and watch tape of North Texas and put in a couple different things on both sides of the ball,” said Dimel. “There’s a lot of commonalities on both sides of the ball between what we do and what they do. So it’s an easy prep and a prep to where we can start easily modifying things to specifically fit what they do.” read more: https://www.ktsm.com/sports/college-sports/utep/utep-well-underway-with-implementing-game-plan-for-north-texas/
  21. 8. Grant Gunnell, North Texas Gunnell is listed here for North Texas, but the former Arizona and Memphis signal-caller has to beat Austin Aune for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. Fall practice is Gunnell's first opportunity for snaps in the Mean Green uniform after spending the 2021 season and '22 spring at Memphis. Gunnell did not record a snap of playing time with the Tigers due to injury, but he previously played in 12 games at Arizona (2019-20) and threw for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns to only three picks over 248 attempts. The sample size is still relatively small, but Gunnell's accuracy has been on point (66.5 percent for his career). North Texas averaged under 200 passing yards a game last fall, but coach Seth Littrell hopes for Gunnell to be the missing piece and spark the downfield attack. read more: https://athlonsports.com/college-football/conference-usa-quarterback-rankings-2022
