LOS ANGELES -- "In a perfect world," Gonzagawill make a decision about its conference affiliation in the next two weeks as the potential exists for it to join the Mountain West ahead of the 2018-19 season, athletic director Mike Roth told CBS Sports. There is mutual interest between both parties in Gonzaga becoming the 12th basketball member of the 20-year-old Mountain West. On the opening drive in Saturday afternoon’s spring game at Apogee Stadium, junior quarterback Mason Fine hit junior Rico Bussey for a 52-yard gain across the middle of the field. A few plays later he found sophomore running back Evan Johnson for a 10-yard score. The next possession, redshirt senior Quinn Shanbour threw a short pass to redshirt sophomore Keegan Brewer. Wren Baker vowed better times were on the way when he took over as North Texas' athletic director in summer 2016. Those times certainly appeared to arrive during the fall sports season that will go down as one of the best in program history. Those few months kicked off Baker's second year at the school. UNT is in the process of finalizing a deal for a nonconference football game with Incarnate Word, that will be played on Sept. 22 of 2018 at Apogee Stadium, multiple sources with knowledge of the deal said Wednesday morning. A UNT spokesman said that the schools were in talks, while a spokesman at Incarnate Word confirmed the date. An official announcement is expected to be made in the next few days.
