  1. No, we don't get any bonus points for having a guy graduate early. :)

But, because he's leaving as a graduate to pursue law education (which we don't offer yet), this doesn't even cost us a point for him leaving. It's just like if he'd graduated and gone on with the rest of his life.

    DANG!

  2. We had tons of discussion on this topic. And your assertion that you don't deserve to be a coach if you don't waste a year of eligibility for a chance to win is absurd with the circumstances of that game. Outside of the odds that you could win being very low, a win would have made NT a 3-9 instead of 2-10. If Thompson turns out to be the QB, NT has been searching for, his loss of a year of play for one drive will go down as one of the worst coaching decisions in the history of NT football.

Please ask any player or coach on the team if that assertion is absurd! It doesn't matter what the record is/was if you can win a game, you do it!

Now if the score was 40-3 or something, then yes, you probably don't do it...

  3. I didn't realize Bain was out. The intent of the post was to bring to light that Thompson is a Sophomore and not a Redshirt Freshman as stated earlier in the thread.

OK. Yeah, Baine had mono and didn't even travel with the team to that game. Thompson is definitely a Sophomore, and as much as that sucks, according to his interview with Vito, he values that 3+ min. of game time and I hope the other guys on the team do too. Camaraderie/Confidence will be critical for him in the early go if he does manage to start game 1.

  4. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I read on ESPN Dallas that Thompson lost his redshirt when Todd Dodge, in his infinite wisdom, put him in the last game of the season after Rodge and Tune went down.

What would you have done sir?

    Riley = Out.

    Tune = Out.

    Baine = Out.

No one else had experience running QB in our system other than Thompson. We were 10 pts down in the game. We still had a chance to win. Play the person who gives you the best chance to win. If you don't do that, you don't deserve to be coaching at ANY level, FBS, High School, or otherwise.

  5. Thompson, White and Odufawa will definitely be starters unless injured. The other two positions will be wide open. Shorter was a starter but I see him getting a lot of competition from Williams and McGhee. Also I predict that while JJ won't start Johnson and White together, they will be on the court together a lot next season. I wouldn't be surprised at least early that the second big will by a committee until someone rises above the others. I give Holmen a slight edge because I believe he has greater potential than the others. Even though Spencer was the first frontcourt player off the bench and Edwards was recruited to repace Tramiel, I don't see either getting big minutes.

    PG - Josh White ( 15), Johnson (20), Williams (5)

    W - Tristan Thompson (30), White (10)

    W - McGhee (15), Williams (10), Shorter (10), White (5)

    F - Holmen (15), Hogans (15), Shorter (5), Edwards (5)

    p- Odufawa (30), Spencer (5), Knox (5)

Alzee needs more minutes at PG, not on the wing. Take 5 min. a piece away from Josh & Dom and distribute them on the wings and I think we may have something here. I hope Edwards can contribute more than 5 min/game, but I haven't seen anything other than his 3 year old HS highlights that make me think otherwise. If we're relying on Holmen & Hogans to replace Tramiel, then we might be in trouble. Hogans is good, but not on Tramiel's plane. I think Holmen will only get better, but I don't know if he will be on ET's level yet either.

  6. Every quarterback needs an unbiased friend on a message board. That support is usually very important to coaches and other players.

    What about Running backs?

I don't care what any of y'all say! WESTON SQUIER IS THE MAN and that will be obvious by the time the first game rolls around!

  7. Let's see. I said Dodge wasn't the right hire for us...and I was right.

I said Riley... was too fragile to play D1 QB...and I was right.

And I say Dodge will not be back next season, but I will be.

Because being a fan of my school doesn't mean blindly accepting this bad product. If being a fan means always saying the coach is right, then all those Dickey haters have some explaining to do.

I said Dodge wasn't the right hire for us...and I was right: I think the jury is still out on this. The early returns are not good, but we don't know for sure. What if you're wrong?

I said Riley... was too fragile to play D1 QB...and I was right: Riley was the best option at QB though, injury prone or not.

And I say Dodge will not be back next season, but I will be: No, you said Dodge will be gone by week 7 or 8, meaning he wont even finish out the season. Will you stand by that? What if you're wrong?

No one is blindly supporting. I don't think Dodge is always right. I was scratching my head 'til my scalp was bleeding when the whole 2 TO, 4th down fiasco went down last year. Regardless, saying the same thing over and over gets old. You're frustrated with the football program (like most of us)! We know... just post something discussion-worthy sometimes please. You're a UNT alumn right? I know you can contribute more!

  8. Yeah, Alabama and Troy are great representations of the average defense we faced last season. Tune's lack of speed isn't what killed the offense last season. Defensive coordinators knowing that we could only throw outs and 15 yard routes is what allowed defenses to "sell out" against the run...and that was regardless of QB.

I don't know why anyone is fretting. From all reports we now run an offense that utilizes TE's and throws the ball downfield. And, we will have a QB who can get the ball there. Riley will add matchup problems galore also. Do you put a LB on him? Do you put an extra CB on the field?

Everyone put your fears to bed. Running a real college offense we will be better than ok.

Emmitt, I want to... I just don't see how starting a carreer backup or Thompson (or Baine, etc...) will help the new offense click. I think just about everyone can agree that with Canales running the show, we stand a better chance, but the QB position is the most important on the field. I think the concerns there are valid. I really hope you're right though.

  9. While begging for another QB, we already have a HS recruit coming in this fall and get get plenty of reps in practice, also Baine will be ready to go if needed as well.

QB should not be a worry right now.

I don't think QB depth is the question. I think QB quality is the issue, especially in Canales' offense where the QB is relied upon to run a little.

  10. Oh boy...

I guess I'd like to see Tune start the season with Thompson getting some reps in somehow (hopefully mopping up UNT's lopsided victories) and, unless Tune is killing the competition, Thompson starting by the time conference games roll around.

At least Riley is on the field somewhere. Could make for a heck of an end around play (although I think that's how he threw his first carreer int...)

I think I agree with TFLF in that Riley moving to WR makes the loss of Cole sting much less.

  11. Scary to think that we might be no-hit on our opening day. Good game!

    Also, to make a prediction:

Alot of people are saying that even though Anaheim lost some critical pieces, that they reloaded enough to stay atop the west... I don't think so.

The division is definitely there for Texas or Seattle to take. Seattle made themselves much better this offseason with the addition of Figgins and Lee. I think the Rangers chances will come down to Feldman pitching like he did last year, the young pitchers continuing to improve, and Harden winning more games than Millwood did last year. If all 3 of those come together, then the Rangers can take the West outright. The wildcard is not coming from the AL West though.

  12. The Ohio State AD implies he wants more than 12 teams. The expected revenue increase or decrease for adding multiples of teams will determine what other member Presidents and ADs think. Value-added for a Notre Dame has to be higher than for adding a Rutgers.

I agree that additions to the Big 6 conferences could trickle down to help North Texas land a better spot somewhere. We must also be open to going west (like TCU) if it means an upgrade in conference. :o

...big difference between the MWC and the WAC (especially if BSU gets picked off). Much more incentive to go MWC over WAC. The competition is much better there. I don't think anyone would argue with going to the MWC.

Leaving the Sun Belt for the WAC is maybe a slight upgrade in competition, but the hit to the budget is too hard to justify it (Hawaii/Idaho?)

  13. As much as the 'proven' commodity means, I believe I'm with CMJ on this one. Can't coach size! Having a 6'10" Bobo would change EVERYTHING.

If RJ McGhee is the real deal, then he should be able to get a little court time next year behind Tristan and pick up the slack for him in 2011-12. Babb would be awesome to have, but I'll take Bobo if I'm forced to choose.

H.S. player would be nice if the player were named Tony Mitchell, otherwise, I'll take one of the other two.

Of course, if Mangrum is coming back, then I'm fine with having him on the team instead. He'll be in for a great Sr. campaign.

  14. I don't think that I like it either, I think it waters down the tournament, makes the regular season less important for the big conferences and makes things like the NIT even less relevant.

i guess on a brighter note it would make the NIT easier to win if wehppen to win the conference but not the tournament.... still don't like it.

If we happen to win the regular season conference title, but not the SBC tourney, then according to this format, we're still in. I agree with CMJ. I think this format is a NIT killer... too bad.

  15. Looks like it is a crane instead of an elevator shaft.

Also, i have heard from a source inside the department that the hotel could be coming down as soon as may or june.

I thought this was put on hold indefinitely since John Q. Hammonds was having a hard time finding money for the project?
