Because in their mind it's "better." It's not with dirty ole UNT, etc. etc. Also probably in their mind, the scenario of the PAC12 plucking whoever they want after those next 6 schools depart is the reality they are living in.
SMU is looking for the P5 tag, at literally any cost. But if we follow the smart money, the TV money, it's not going to be a P5. It's going to be very, very sloppy leftovers.
But, would UNT join the PAC12 if invited? You know the answer to this.

If SMU left for the PAC-12, what we we have to talk about?

On a daily basis, many UNT fans remind me of Trump and the media. When it comes to SMU, most people on here hate them, but just like the media and Trump, we can't stop talking about them.

The facts (not opinions)
SDSU sent a letter stating it was intending to leave the MWC and asked for a couple of caveats. The MWC responded hell no and that they considered the letter an official withdrawal notice. As we sit today, the MWC's official stance is that SDSU submitted their withdrawal notice. The president of SDSU was promptly removed from her position on the conference leadership council, they aren't paying SDSU their yearly conference payment and are withholding SDSU bball tournament credits. All of this normal for a departing team.
SDSU has argued for weeks that the letter intending to leave the conference was not a formal statement of withdrawal and the latest letter stating SDSU will remain in the MWC doesn't change anything in the factual department although we'll get to that in a minute. MWC disagrees. This where we stand on the facts.
Conjecture:
SDSU made a very shrewd decision in their recent actions. At minimum, they laid the groundwork for a legal fight if they indeed are forced to stay in the MWC. At best, they bought time. Time for the Pac 12 to finish their sheet.
The Pac-12 knows they need to handle their business in the next couple of weeks before their conference on July 21st. That has always been the "unofficial" deadline. I strongly suspect they will. Will it be enough to keep the conference together? We will see. I have some ideas about the delays but I would ask intrepid ponyfans to look at the ESPN fiasco with their recent layoffs and the mobs targeting them over the money they gave to Pat McAfee. Optics bad for announcing a PAC 12 deal? Thoughts for another day and I've digressed.
Prediction:
The PAC 12 announces their deal after getting buy in and GOR rights signed in the next two weeks. I'll guess 7/13-14. Invites promptly go out to SDSU and SMU. Accepted.
SDSU smiles at MWC and says "you were right all along and we agree." MWC counters that SDSU claimed it wasnt a withdrawal letter and they want the double fee. Both parties do a 180 degree turn on their previous positions. Hilarity ensues.

SMU was punching the air after seeing Utah, TCU, Rutgers, Louisville, BYU,Cincy, UCF and especially dear old UofH get elevated to a P5 conference.
You have no fans. You have no recent football or basketball success. You even tried to rebrand yourselves as "Dallas" even though The University of Dallas already exists.
SMU even divorced the Methodist church for a chance at the P5.
When ALL of this failed, You guys resorted to buying your way into a P5 conference. The jury is out on if this will work, but I predict SMU may try going independent in football if this falls through.
mustangfan had a good point, UNT is in the same conference with SMU, you guy's aren't even on the schedule for either of us. By the way, didn't SMU hang 77 on the cougars last year?

Who knows. There's a lot of shuffling to come. ACC will get raided. Do leftovers go to B12? PAC? Both? Raid others? So incentives like the playoff put pressure on lower teams in B10/SEC to leave? Do they keep expanding? Leave NCAA? Do judicial rulings make scholarship athletes employees and blow everything up?
No idea. But PAC is an upgrade for now and that's all we can know
If and when SMU goes to the PAC12, are you looking at a 2024 or 25 schedule?

Most of you guys need to educate yourself on the NIL. SMU is just trying to play the game, they are far from the only one running a transfer program like this. Baylor outbid SMU for two players in this past cycle. A player in demand, is not going to sign with a school, just because of the NIL offer, many times if it is a tie with a couple of schools, it can be a tie breaker. Either we get in and play, or we can continue to be bitter about what others are stepping up to the plate with.

I just saw this on 247/Sports. I wish we played SMU earlier in the season, before these players have time to jell. They will get a couple of losses early, because of road trips to a Oklahoma team that loaded up in the portal and pretty much the same for TCU.
"SMU football hit the transfer portal hard this offseason, bringing in quantity and quality proven by placing three new players on the Top247 transfer portal players this cycle.
The Mustangs added 26 players through the portal, 17 before the spring and another nine between spring and summer. That was good enough to give SMU the No. 12 transfer class in the country, topping the American Athletic Conference and all Group of 5 teams. In fact, SMU would be No. 1 in the Big 10, No. 2 in the Big 12, No. 4 in the Pac-12 and the ACC and No. 5 in the SEC.
Eight of SMU's transfers were four-star recruits coming out of high school and all 25 scholarship transfers are at least three-star transfers."

Let's be honest here, they are losing their 3 top nationally recognized brands. How else would you expect them to react?
Losing their top three teams, makes it a small step up for us from CUSA. If SMU leaves, maybe just a half step up?

I've heard of Trump Derangement Syndrome, but some of you mental midgets, must have Mustang Derangement Syndrome. Getting negative emojis, when I am providing information, for a subject that is being discussed in this thread.

I was just on the TCU board and their fans are pretty irritated with the Mustangs. SMU got two of their players last week, including four-star receiver Jordan Hudson from Garland High School that was a true freshman last year. They are also irked, because the Mustangs just got a commitment from a transfer defensive lineman from Oklahoma, that TCU hosted this past Tuesday and Wednesday. They said SMU's NIL program, is just as good or fearfully better than theirs.

I can't remember his name, but I saw on Twitter where UNT has offered a transfer tight end from Texas State.
