It was the worst attendance I've seen in several seasons for October on a sunny, pleasant day.  Honestly, it was embarrassing, even for an 11 a.m. kick.

It could have been 3500-4000 easily. I know the truth will upset some. 6000 would have been a very generous count.

I am not sure who to get mad at; I hope the money is good. Anyone who has gone to the games for the last 20-plus years knows better.

Knowing your audience, customers, and fanbase is essential. Preaching to them won't help. It might be a bit different if the game was for a championship or an undefeated season. If the game had been at 5:00 pm yesterday, there probably would have been another 10-12k there. I have to figure this kind of early game kills the concession stands and others.

  2. Our Tailgate begins at 8:30 a.m.
Exact location, as always. Blue lot northwest corner closest to the Stadium.

We will be wrapping up Tailgate by 10:30 a.m.

    Bring your favorite Drink.

Victor, Amanda, and Lauren plan to have Early Win Breakfast Casserole, Amanda’s Famous Mean Green Jell-O Shots, and their holy cow; this is too early Bloody Marys and Mimosas.

John has cookies and a yet-to-be-determined Eclipse food.

I will have Spicy Balls. Maybe they would be good eclipse food?

Oh I mean it wasn’t that bad and there was cloud, I was on the sideline and was getting hot but nothing compared to like Ball State in 2013 or SMU in 2014.

But for others, it could be and some don’t want to be in the heat🤷🏻‍♂️ it’s the mentality, If we won the CUsA championship and a bowl game, it would’ve looked a lot different…

I think Labor Day weekend and the predicted 106 degrees in the shade was part of it and to your point, we were a pretty bad team last year when it counted.

I learned how to tailgate late in life, and I am glad I lived long enough to do so. Tell me the game time and we will be out there 3.5 hours before.

Six weekends a year, weather be damned, I stop everything I am doing and just enjoy being outside with friends. It is weird...some of my best friends, including immediate family, brothers and family and friends, are my tailgate crew. I see most of them more during football season than the other 8ish months combined. My blood pressure drops, we enjoy good food, talk about current and old times, reminisce on great tailgates and games of the past, speculate on crowd size and scores of the game of the day, have a pre-game peaty Scotch and then the pickle, and just enjoy being alive.

Then the game happens. It is the reason we did the above. And six times a year in Denton, a few other times elsewhere, I watch my team. The players and coaches come and go, the team remains. My team. My only team.

I treasure every minute of these six days a year.

At the Cal game tailgate, I was talking to a Fraternity Brother who I started tailgating with and realized that Holy Shit I have been tailgating North Texas football games now for 22 years; how in the hell can I be this old?

ESPNU also has the lowest ratings of all linear networks typically, unfortunately but still better than ESPN+

    Is it?

    I wonder.

I keep reading that live TV bundles, whether cable, satellite, or YouTube TV, ratings are dropping like rocks and that  Baby Boomers are the generation watching the most of this. I heard this is what spawned the Golden Bachelor.

The younger the generation, the less amount of "Live TV/Cable TV like" there is and the more on-demand streaming there is. More of an à la carte choice seems to be the most common. I have the ESPN package app that works on my ROKU and, in most cases, pretty great resolution. Now, some broadcasts need much better announcers and better camera work. I turn the ESPN subscription off for months when I am not watching any sports they offer.

    This.

The difference in attendance from a 11AM game to a 6 PM game will be negligible. The exposure,  regardless if nation wide or just our region and their's would be far greater than the 2-4k difference in butts in the seats.

And who do you think this effects more, the student attendance or the alumni attendance? Students should at the least want to be in the stands to possibly be seen on "national" TV.  Tailgaters who were planning on tailgating a 6pm game will most likely still tailgate at 11am.

I am not sure about the students now. I hear stories of Friday nights being an all-night video game play night and sleep-in to noon on Saturdays.

But I know plenty of alumni prioritize our games differently than other schools. Something like Kiddo sports,  home chores early in the day, and then going to North Texas Football. The actual number of butts in seats can differ quite a bit, in my experience. The difference in announced may not be as much.

The hard part about an 11:00 a.m. game is most try to start wrapping up their tailgates about an hour before the game starts. To get others out to tailgate even for an hour means 9:00 a.m., and most of the casual fans are not doing that.
